In automobiles, power steering (also power assisted steering (PAS) or steering assist system) helps drivers steer by augmenting steering effort of the steering wheel.
Hydraulic or electric actuators add controlled energy to the steering mechanism, so the driver can provide less effort to turn the steered wheels when driving at typical speeds, and reduce considerably the physical effort necessary to turn the wheels when a vehicle is stopped or moving slowly. Power steering can also be engineered to provide some artificial feedback of forces acting on the steered wheels.
Representative power steering systems for cars augment steering effort via an actuator, a hydraulic cylinder that is part of a servo system. These systems have a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the linkage that steers the wheels. This means that power-steering system failure (to augment effort) still permits the vehicle to be steered using manual effort alone.
Other power steering systems (such as those in the largest off-road construction vehicles) have no direct mechanical connection to the steering linkage; they require electrical power. Systems of this kind, with no mechanical connection, are sometimes called "drive by wire" or "steer by wire", by analogy with aviation's "fly-by-wire". In this context, "wire" refers to electrical cables that carry power and data, not thin-wire-rope mechanical control cables.

Flushing power steering fluid and eliminate power steering pump noise. This video shows you how to drain all of your power steering fluid and completely flush out the system. This method will ensure you get a complete fluid change and flush to give you another 100k miles of care free driving. The power steering fluid should be changed based on your owners manual service section (typically in the back of the book). Symptoms of bad power steering fluid are brown or black fluid, a loud power steering pump, and having a hard time turning the steering wheel. I've been asked about doing a video on changing out power steering fluid for some time. I've finally put together this video to answer to that request. It's really not that difficult. Figuring out some of the logistics however can be a challenge, but once you get past that it's a pretty straightforward procedure. Just remember to use the correct fluid on your system. If not, it may not operate properly or damage to the power steering system can result. Video tutorial on how to determine if your vehicle does have a faulty power steering system. This video is a walkthrough, there are no procedures shown how to do any tests using any specialty equipment/tools. There are various ways a power steering system can fail and there could be various reasons as to why the system is failing. Sometimes it can be a simple and cheap fix, other times it can be very costly. If you find the system is low on fluid, please consult with your owner's manual to determine the correct fluid that is used. This particular tutorial was done on a 2003 Dodge Dakota equipped with a 4.7L V8. Rebuilding Honda power steering pumps isn't that difficult but it comes with a warning, it might not work out. I had a heck of a time with this one. In the end the fix was to just replace it. You might consider that option if you have a noisy pump. However, the rebuild kit is very affordable and if you have the time and inclination, I think it's worth a shot. This video features my 2001 Honda Odyssey but this same pump was used on a variety of Honda and Acura vehicles from 1998-2002. In fact I think there are only a few differences between this pump and the generation before it. Lastly I'll say that I strongly recommend you only use Honda fluid. Use of other fluids can cause issues. Seal Kit: http://www.carid.com/1998-honda-accord-steering-parts/gates-power-steering-pump-seal-kit-208...

Video documents Ford Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) failure and identifies cause in 2010 Ford Flex Ecoboost. Evidence is presented suggesting Ford has been less than honest concerning electric steering failure disposition in millions of vehicles since 2008. If you own a Ford vehicle equipped with electric power steering; you and your family have been placed at risk of injury or death. If you own pre 2011 Ford vehicle equipped with electric power steering; Ford and the NHTSB have excluded you from the 2015 recall affecting over 3 million Ford vehicles with identical EPAS equipment and failures. The reason for your exclusion is fact more than 12 million pre 2011 Ford vehicles include defective TRW EPAS steering gear. Ford's bottom line has been placed before your family's safety. Fa...

This is a detailed video of my procedure for performing a complete overhaul and rebuild of the power steering pump on a 2002 Honda Odyssey. At 178,000 miles, it developed a leak and I decided to attempt an overhaul on the pump rather than buying a replacement. I purchased a repair kit online from Rock Auto for around $20 including shipping. Since a quality rebuilt/remanufactured pump can cost upwards of $200, I thought it was worth a try. The repair kit which included all of the o-rings and seals was a Gates brand, part #348527. With the right basic tools and some patience, it is not a very difficult job. UPDATE: The leak was not with the pump after all. This project was a worthwhile attempt at fixing the problem and I enjoyed learning about the process of overhauling the pump. Howeve...
