The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was a selection system that created five bowl game match-ups involving ten of the top ranked teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of American college football, including an opportunity for the top two teams to compete in the BCS National Championship Game. The system was in place for the 1998 through 2013 seasons and in 2014 was replaced by the College Football Playoff.
The BCS relied on a combination of polls and computer selection methods to determine relative team rankings, and to narrow the field to two teams to play in the BCS National Championship Game held after the other college bowl games. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) was contractually bound to vote the winner of this game as the BCS National Champion and the contract signed by each conference required them to recognize the winner of the BCS National Championship game as the official and only champion. The BCS was created to end split championships and for the champion to win the title on the field between the two teams selected by the BCS. Despite this objective, it failed to produce a consensus champion on one occasion, as the 2003 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with a split title, with the Associated Press (AP) Poll selecting the USC Trojans and the Coaches' Poll being contractually committed to select the LSU Tigers.

Led by the sizzling Peter Warrick and the steady Chris Weinke, the Seminoles held off Virginia Tech for a 46-29 victory in the national championship game. The 27 year old Weinke completed 20 of 34 passes for 329 yards and four TDs - two to Warrick and two to Ron Dugans. Warrick finished with six catches for 163 yards in the highest scoring Sugar Bowl in history. In the last National Title of the BCS era Florida State looks to close out a perfect season in the perfect setting. Meanwhile the Auburn Tigers come in playing the best football of any team and would love nothing more than to spoil FSU's season and keep the SEC steak alive.

Flynn Leads LSU With 4 TDs As Tigers Extend Buckeyes' SEC Struggles: NEW ORLEANS, LA -- The second-ranked Tigers danced, dodged and darted their way into the end zone Monday night for a 38-24 victory, turning the title game into a horrible replay for No. 1 Ohio State. In a season of surprises, this was hardly an upset: Ohio State once again fell apart in college football's biggest game. A year after the Buckeyes were routed by Florida 41-14, they barely did better. But this was unprecedented. Playing at their home-away-from-home in the Big Easy, the Tigers (12-2) became the first two-loss team to compete for the title. Still, LSU was a runaway No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll. The Tigers received 60 of 65 first-place votes from a national media panel. Georgia, Southern Californ...

The 2013 edition of the BCS National Championship Game featured two of the most storied programs in the history of college football - the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Billed as a battle between two great defenses, fans and media pundits alike were shocked as the Alabama offense steamrolled the vaunted defense of the Irish to the tune of over 500 yards in a 42-14 rout of Notre Dame. The victory marked Alabama's 3rd national championship in 4 years and Alabama head coach Nick Saban's 4th national title overall. Eddie Lacy and CJ Mosley were named the game's most valuable players.

Alabama beat LSU 21--0 to win their 14th national championship, marking the first shutout in a national championship game since the 1992 Orange Bowl and the first ever shutout in a BCS bowl game.
After completing an undefeated regular season by besting their division rivals LSU and Mississippi State. Then defeating their most bitter rival Auburn in a highly contentious Iron Bowl. And dominating the seemingly invincible Florida Gators with their Heisman Trophy winning quarterback. The Alabama Crimson Tide certainly earned their spot in the BCS National Championship at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California where they faced off against the Texas Longhorns. The game started out good but things took a shocking turn when a big hit knocked Texas quarterback Colt McCoy out of the game for good. Alabama went on to easily claim a National Championship and complete Alabama's re-emergence as the premier college football program in the land.
