Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Iraq's Prime Minister says government forces and their allies will retake control of Mosul by the end of the year. It's been an effective summer for Iraqi forces battling ISIL. Now, they're fighting to retake Iraq's second biggest city - Mosul - which has been under ISIL control for more than two years. The Iraqi army, Kurdish forces, Shia militias and the US air force are all converging on the city from different directions. Iraqi soldiers re-took Qayara on Saturday. It's an oil-producing town that's about 70 kilometres south of Mosul, and near a major air base. The Iraqi army had been fighting for control of Qayara for several weeks. Now, Prime Minister Haider al Abadi says Mosul will be captured by the end of the year. So, how ready are government forces? and what does the off...

Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched a military operation on Sunday morning from Gwer and Khazir front lines, east of Mosul, liberating 12 villages from the so-called Islamic State (IS), said a Peshmerga commander. The offensive started at 5:00 a.m. and was directly supervised by the President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani. Peshmerga forces and the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Counter-terrorism forces participated in the offensive with the aerial support of the US-led coalition jets. Nearly 130 ISIS extremists were killed during the two-day offensive.
Hundreds of additional US troops are due to arrive in northern Iraq to provide assistance to local forces as they prepare for a major push to recapture Mosul from the so-called Islamic State. The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken...

Diplomats, officials and oil men say, shuttle diplomacy by the United States' envoy to the anti-Islamic State coalition brokered an oil deal between Iraq and its Kurdish region vital to a climactic battle with the jihadists. The sources said the oil revenue-sharing deal sealed in August was critical to getting the central and regional governments to coordinate planning for a push on the Islamic State stronghold Mosul as soon as this month. Kurdish peshmerga forces surround the stronghold on three sides. The Kurdish region is home to Iraq's major northern oilfields. A quarrel, however, over who benefits from export revenues has become a prolonged, tangled and emotive dispute. ►Circle us on Google + http://goo.gl/TXeBfX ►Subscribe Channel http://goo.gl/mqt0wI ►Don't forget to Like * Comment...

The Institute hosted a policy forum on Sept. 22, 2016, to discuss the progress of Iraqi security forces against the Islamic State and their imminent operation to liberate Mosul. The panelists included Brig. Gen. William Mullen and Dr. Daniel Green, who also discussed how the coming battle for Mosul relates to lessons learned during their previous tour in Fallujah, where they served during the 2007 surge and which is the topic of their book, "Fallujah Redux: The Anbar Awakening and the Struggle with al-Qaeda" (Naval Institute Press, 2014). The discussion was moderated by Michael Eisenstadt, the Institute's Kahn Fellow and Director of its Military and Security Studies Program. Brig. Gen. William F. A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq. The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons. For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting. Date : 21.8.2016 The Iraqi army and volunteer forces have been carrying out an offensive to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists. Mosul fell into the hands of the Takfiri terrorists in June 2014 when the terror group claimed it as their main bastion in Iraq. But the Iraqi army and the allied Popular Mobilization Units have been immensely successful in flushing the extremists out of the cities fell to Daesh. There are more variables at play through, one being the United States. Critics have time and again questioned US deployment of troops, citing Washington's failure to commit them when Daesh was overrunning Syrian and Iraqi cities one after another. In tonight's edition of the Debate, we'll focus on the role of some of the major players on the ground as Baghdad appears to be on the verge...
