Blockade for CBI probe

Kohima, Oct. 17: The Dimapur-Coordination Committee on Fuel Adulteration, All Nagaland Aggrieved Hindi Teachers' Association and Nagaland SSA Teachers' Association have begun an indefinite agitation over the Nagaland government's apathy towards their demands.

The committee on fuel adulteration today decided to block tankers and government vehicles on National Highway 29, demanding a CBI probe into the fuel adulteration scam, which was unearthed in June this year.

The committee said it did not have any confidence in the state government's special investigation team, which is currently investigating the scam.

The government, which has declared the blockade illegal, said based on specific complaints, the police and administration on June 27 raided six locations in Dimapur and Chumukedima. The team discovered largescale fuel adulteration and seized several tankers.

Two cases were registered at Diphupar police station and West Dimapur police station.

Home commissioner Abhijit Sinha said a special investigation team headed by the inspector-general (range) was subsequently formed by the state government on July 15 for an investigation. He said as the cases required investigation outside the state and the Forensic Science Laboratory reports of the samples collected were yet to be received, the team was unable to complete investigation and submit the chargesheets.

The state government has directed the director-general of police to instruct the special investigation team to submit chargesheets within the next 10 days. However, the committee said the blockade had nothing to do with the chargesheet. It said the blockade had been called in view of the government's failure to bring the CBI.

The committee added that by adopting a confrontational attitude, the government had by default declared that it supported the five petrol pump employees - Dinanath, Srikanth, Umesh, Naval and Ajay Prasad - the alleged masterminds of the scam.

It said it was not bothered whether the chargesheet was filed in three days or 10 days, its main concern was to convey to the public that the team cannot satisfactorily bring the case to its logical conclusion because fuel adulteration is not merely confined to these five men.

"This racket involves the whole of the food and civil supplies department, the deputy commissioners of the districts and politicians," a member of the committee said.
