Guru Dakshina (1983 film)

Guru Dakshina is a 1983 Malayalam movie. The film was directed by Baby. It features Adoor Bhasi, Sathish Menon, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Ratheesh and Pappu. The screenplay was written by Baby and the songs of the movie were by Joy.

Plot

The story revolves around Kunjunni Mash (Adoor Bhasi), who is a school teacher. His daughter(Sunanada) falls in love with the Panchayat President's (T. G. Ravi) son(Sathish Menon). However, he demands dowry to Kunjunni Mash in the form of money to let the marriage happen. The rest of the movie shows how Kunjunni Mash goes to see each of his old students (Mammooty, mohanlal, ratheesh,Unnimary ) to seek help for his daughter's marriage.

Dakshina

Dakshina (Sanskrit: dakṣiṇa, means "south, southern", but also refers to a Tantric concept right-hand path, as well as a Vedic concept of donation or payment for the services of a priest, spiritual guide or teacher.

Etymology and description

As a Vedic concept, the donation originally consisted of a cow (according to Kātyāyana Śrautasūtra 15, Lāṭyāyana Śrautasūtra 8.1.2). The term itself is derived from this, the feminine dakṣiṇā being a term for a cow able to calve and give milk (a prolific cow, milch-cow) in the Rigveda.

Dakshina is personified as a goddess along with Brahmanaspati, Indra and Soma in RV 1.18.5 and RV 10.103.8, and is the reputed author of RV 10.107 according to the Anukramani.

In later literature, in the Manusmrti and in the Ramayana, the term dakshina acquires a more general meaning of "thanks" or "a gift".

Gurudakshina

Gurudakshina refers to the tradition of repaying one's teacher or guru after a period of study or the completion of formal education, or to spiritual guide. This tradition is one of acknowledgment, respect, and thanks. It is a form of reciprocity and exchange between student and teacher. The repayment is not exclusively monetary and may be a special task the teacher wants the student to accomplish.

Satabdi Roy

Satabdi Roy (Bengali: শতাব্দী রায়; born 5 October 1968) is an Indian actress and politician from West Bengal. She has been acting since 1986 in the Bengali cinema and serving as a Member of Parliament since 2009.

Early life

She was born on 5 October 1969, in Agarpara, to Shailen and Nilima Roy. Satabdi Roy passed her Madhyamik from Sorojini High School in 1986 and later attended Jogamaya Devi College, a women's college affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

She is an actress, director and teacher of acting in the Bengali language film industry as well as an author of poetry in Bengali.

Roy made her film debut in the film called Atanka, directed by Tapan Sinha, which was released in 1986. (Earlier she had worked in a film called Tina directed by Dinen Gupta, but it was never released.) More recently she acted in Fight 1:1, released in 2011.

Politics

She became the Member of Parliament, having won in the Lok Sabha election on a Trinamool Congress ticket from the Birbhum constituency of West Bengal in 2009. She again won from the same constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2014.

Tapas Paul

Tapas Paul (born Tapas Paul on 29 September 1958) is a Bengali actor from Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He is a Member of Parliament from Krishnanagar having won in the 2009 Indian General Elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket.

Education

Tapas Paul did his graduation in Bio-Science from Hooghly Mohsin College under University of Burdwan.

Film career

Paul's first movie appearance was in 1980, in the film Dadar Kirti, directed by Tarun Majumder. He received a Filmfare Award for his role in Saheb. He acted in many other movies such as Bhalobasha Bhalobasha and Guru Dakshina.

Deva Premal

Deva Premal (born 2 April 1970 in Nürnberg, Germany) is a musician known for her meditative spiritual new-age music, which puts ancient Buddhist and Sanskrit mantras—as well as chants in other languages—into atmospheric contemporary settings.

Biography

Premal met her partner in life and music, Miten, at the Osho ashram in Pune, India in 1990, where she was studying reflexology, shiatsu, cranio-sacral therapy, and massage. They have been touring together since 1992, offering concerts and chant workshops worldwide.

Best known for her top-selling chant CDs, Premal is a classically trained musician who grew up singing mantras in a German home permeated with Eastern Spirituality. Her albums have topped the New Age charts throughout the world since her first release, The Essence (1998), which features the "Gayatri Mantra." Deva Premal began her journey with mantra in her mother's womb, as her father chanted the "Gayatri Mantra"—one of the most sacred mantras of Sanatana Dharma—to her daily.
