French Guiana, an overseas region of France on the northern Atlantic coast of South America, appears to be a magnet for immigrants, both legal and illegal, from all over the world.
The 2,000km-long frontier of French Guiana - which consists of a single department - is bordered between Suriname and Brazil by rivers, making its borders porous and difficult to police.
These factors, as well as what local politician Paulin Brune calls "liberal" French immigration laws, have made the region a gateway to Europe.

The Wild Coast is a physical, historical and philosophical exploration of the Guianas, the three countries that make up the northeast of South America. None of these three countries speak Spanish as an official language and one has English as the official language. They are quite unique and still very much wild and untamed. In our filming the main theme of the Guianas is freedom. As you will see in the film, freedom has both been trampled on and clinged-to at very great costs.
The film explores what happened at Jonestown, where 900 people died during a mass suicide/murder led by cult leader Jim Jones in 1973. It explores the freedom-loving Maroon people of Suriname who were brought as slaves from Africa but rebelled against their slave owners establishing their own communities in the jungle and fighting back against their former slave masters. This group later would fight against the Marxist dictator president of Suriname, Desi Bouterse during the Suriname Guerilla War. And finally we explore the penal system in French Guiana, and specifically Henri Charrière and his book Papillon, the greatest story of prison escape every told, and where he eventually escaped to, Venezuela (with a glorious look at the Angel Falls in Canaima National Park).

The Îles du Salut (in English: Salvation Islands) were used as a penal colony from 1852 onwards, earning them a reputation for harshness and brutality.
The islands are today restored and the visit of many tourists.

French Guiana
French Guiana (pronounced /ɡiːˈɑːnə/ or /ɡiːˈænə/, French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]), officially called Guiana (French: Guyane), is an overseas department and region of France, located on the north Atlantic coast of South America in the Guyanas. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of only 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 250,109 inhabitants in 2013 living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is the second largest region of France and the largest outermost region within the European Union.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. It was colonised by Frenchmen and other Europeans, who introduced African slaves and later Asian labourers and Hmong refugees from Laos.
The official language is French, while each ethnic community has its own language, of which French Guianese Creole is the most widely spoken.

Checked out a rocket launch, hitchhiked everywhere, and even got a 5-course French meal in for free as a walker-by took pity on us poor backpackers. We then stayed in Cayenne with the lovely Elisabeth and her housemates who we found via couchsurf. Genuinely lovely people, shame I didn't have any footage of them.

Last weekend I made a small trip to Saint Laurant in French Guiana. The French speaking kolonie were they also use european license plates and the euro. Afterwards I went to Galibi. A original Caribean Indian town close to the beach were the green turtles lay their eggs.

GSAT-18 Satellite, India's latest communication satellite, is a high power satellite being inducted into the INSAT/GSAT system. Weighing 3404 kg at lift-off, GSAT-18 carries 48 communication transponders to provide Services in Normal C-band, Upper Extended C-band and Ku-bands of the frequency spectrum. GSAT-18 carries Ku-band beacon as well to help in accurately pointing ground antennas towards the satellite.
GSAT-18 Satellite is designed to provide continuity of services on operational satellites in C-band, Extended C-band and Ku-bands. GSAT-18 Satellite is launched into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by Ariane-5 VA-231 launch vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana. After its injection into GTO, ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan takes control of GSAT-18 Satellite and performs the initial orbit raising maneuvers using the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) of the satellite, placing it in circular Geostationary Orbit.
After this, the deployment of appendages such as the solar panels and antennas as well as three axis stabilisation of the satellite will be performed. GSAT-18 Satellite will be positioned at 74 deg East longitude and co-located with other operational satellites. The designed in-orbit operational life of GSAT-18 is about 15 years.
GSAT-18 is scheduled to be launched on October 05, 2016 between 02:00 Hrs – 03:15 Hrs (IST) from Kourou, French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-231. For more information on launch, Visit Arianespace…

ISRO's GSAT-18 Satellite is all set to launch on October 05, 2016 between 02:00 Hrs – 03:15 Hrs (IST) from Kourou, French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-231Launch Vehicle.
GSAT-18 Satellite, India's latest communication satellite, is a high power satellite being inducted into the INSAT/GSAT system. Weighing 3404 kg at lift-off, GSAT-18 carries 48 communication transponders to provide Services in Normal C-band, Upper Extended C-band and Ku-bands of the frequency spectrum. GSAT-18 carries Ku-band beacon as well to help in accurately pointing ground antennas towards the satellite.
GSAT-18 Satellite is designed to provide continuity of services on operational satellites in C-band, Extended C-band and Ku-bands. GSAT-18 Satellite is launched into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by Ariane-5 VA-231 launch vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana. After its injection into GTO, ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan takes control of GSAT-18 Satellite and performs the initial orbit raising maneuvers using the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) of the satellite, placing it in circular Geostationary Orbit.
After this, the deployment of appendages such as the solar panels and antennas as well as three axis stabilisation of the satellite will be performed. GSAT-18 Satellite will be positioned at 74 deg East longitude and co-located with other operational satellites. The designed in-orbit operational life of GSAT-18 is about 15 years.
GSAT-18 is scheduled to be launched on October 05, 2016 between 02:00 Hrs – 03:15 Hrs (IST) from Kourou, French Guiana by Ariane-5 VA-231. For more information on launch, Visit Arianespace…
