Anthony Neil Wedgwood Benn (3 April 1925 – 14 March 2014), originally known as Anthony Wedgwood Benn, but later as Tony Benn, was a British politician who was a Member of Parliament (MP) for 47 years between the 1950 and 2001 general elections and a Cabinet minister in the Labour governments of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan in the 1960s and 1970s. Originally a 'moderate', he was identified as being on the party's hard left from the early 1980s, and was widely seen as a key proponent of democratic socialism within the party.
Benn inherited a peerage on his father's death (as 2nd Viscount Stansgate), preventing him continuing as an MP. He fought to remain in the House of Commons, and then campaigned for the ability to renounce the title, a campaign which succeeded with the Peerage Act 1963. In the Labour Government of 1964–70 he served first as Postmaster General, where he oversaw the opening of the Post Office Tower, and later as a "technocratic" Minister of Technology.
He served as Chairman of the Labour Party in 1971–72 while in opposition, and in the Labour Government of 1974–1979, he returned to the Cabinet, initially as Secretary of State for Industry, before being made Secretary of State for Energy, retaining his post when James Callaghan replaced Wilson as Prime Minister. When the Labour Party was again in opposition through the 1980s, he emerged as a prominent figure on its left wing and the term "Bennite" came into currency as someone associated with radical left-wing politics.
Broadcast on 14/3/2014 by the BBC. This program is a good, yet critical, evaluation of Tony Benn's life and politics; filled with many of the marvelous speeches he made that only serve to prove how he was, as Peter Shore once described him, Labour's Lost Leader. A very exciting and passionate speech made by Tony Benn in Parliament in 1998, warning MPs of the hundreds of innocent people that would be killed if they vote to bomb Iraq.

Tony Benn on the EU "I can think of no body of men outside the Kremlin who have so much power without a shred of accountability for what they do" On Thursday 23rd June 2016, the people of this country will be asked a question that nobody has asked them for 42 years: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union? My answer to this question will be to leave the undemocratic European Union unequivocally. There are very few politicians who I hold in high esteem and one of those politician is the late Mr Tony Benn who said “If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system,” who was a lifelong opponent of rule from Brussels. This is a once in a life time opportunity to say I believe in an independent democratic Britain that ca...
David Dimbleby chairs a debate on whether the UK should vote to remain in the Common Market, between Roy Jenkins of the Yes campaign (Britain In Europe), and Tony Benn of the No campaign (Out into the World), both men were British Labour Party MP's and cabinet ministers under Prime Minister Harold Wilson's March 1974 - April 1976 Labour government. First shown on Monday 02 June 1975.
Father and son, Tony and Hilary Benn have given two of the most impassioned speeches on the issue of whether to vote for military action. In 1998 Tony Benn argued against the bombing of Iraq, while this week his son Hilary Benn argued in favour bombing Syria. Both speeches were widely praised - and both men, coincidentally, had current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sitting by them in the Commons as they were delivered. Tony Benn died on Friday aged 88. Here, we give our viewers the chance to watch his last ever interview, when he invited Afshin Rattansi to talk to him at his home. Tony Benn said memorably that first they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then DANGEROUS, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you. He became a national treasure in later life even as he continued to rail against imperialism, austerity and capitalism. Afshin Rattansi also goes underground on this week's (Deputy) Prime Minister's Questions.
