Pete Smith is the director of The Oxford Gamelan Society, a member of Southbank Gamelan Players and leading Gamelan groups in many other places.
The British Gamelan Trail is an oral history project to find out how gamelan has become so popular that it is now part of the British heritage. When I first came to London in 1999, I was amazed to discover how many gamelan there were here. I wondered how did this come about? What made people here want to learn the music of so distant a culture? What attracted or inspired them to learn gamelan? And how on earth does it fit in British Society? Maybe I am now a little closer to some sort of answer.'

Heres the celebrated late London bluesman Pigmeat Pete Smith (1952 - 1999) performing "Walking Blues" "Walking Blues" is a blues standard first recorded by Son House for Paramount Records in 1930 and again for the Library of Congress in 1941. It was notably covered by his one-time protégé Robert Johnson in 1936 and by many other blues musicians since.
Pete responded to an advertisement I placed in several acoustic music and blues publications inviting musicians to come over and be recorded for my archive and he came over to my home for a video recording session in February 1998. He was a very gifted and warm affable performer and I will always remember those couple of hours I spent in his company recording the 90 odd minutes of his repertoire I was able to capture that afternoon. Beyond this one meeting I never got to meet him again.I first heard of his death in 1999 whilst having a telephone discussion with a blues journalist who told me he had chanced upon Pete in Londons Royal Free Hospital whilst visiting a ftriend,He described how poorly Pete had looked (he was very yellow faced).Pete tragicaly had discovered in the very late stages that he had a liver related cancer,and apparently he had died within a few days of discovering he was chronicaly ill. I hope this video serves as a small tribute to this very individual blues performer who mostly played his own original blues and was well known in Britain and Europe..

Pete Smith (announcer)
Peter Philip Smith OAM (born 29 May 1939 in Melbourne, Victoria) is an Australian radio and television voice-over artist. He is primarily known for his work with GTV-9 Melbourne as their announcer, including being the announcer on the nationally screened quiz show Sale of the Century for twenty-one years.
Biography
Early life
Peter was educated at Wesley College, Melbourne.
Radio
Upon leaving school, Smith joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a messenger boy before progressing through the ranks to an announcer on the home service and Radio Australia.
On radio in the 1960s, Pete worked with radio station 3AK as a "Good Guy" and with Bert Newton on the Greater 3UZ as it was known during the seventies. From 1995 to 1998, he was a regular voice-over announcer on the national drive-time show Martin/Molloy alongside comedians Tony Martin and Mick Molloy.
Since this time he has made guest appearances on comedy-based radio programmes, including Get This with Tony Martin and Tough Love with Mick Molloy, both aired on Triple M.

Finally the day of the concerts arrives and, as Paul McCartney sings 'Let it Be', Harvey and Bob know that they have triumphed. The show over, the two men sit alone to reflect on matters.

Plot: Pete Smith, a lift bridge operator in a harbor, feels lonely in his cabin, his only visitor being a policeman on patrol, Sgt. Coughlin. Marcas sends a girl, Mary Monks, to deliver a luxurious coat with a fur collar to Smith. Pete and Mary get along well, and for his sake, she betrays Marcas, who is eventually shot to death by the cops, after having stopped his mob from killing Smith. Mary goes away alone into the night, and when Mather finds out that Pete is protecting her, he drops away the evidence of her presence on the spot.

The British Gamelan Trail is an oral history project to find out how gamelan has become so popular that it is now part of the British heritage. When I first came to London in 1999, I was amazed to discover how many gamelan there were here. I wondered how did this come about? What made people here want to learn the music of so distant a culture? What attracted or inspired them to learn gamelan? And how on earth does it fit in British Society? Maybe I am now a little closer to some sort of answer.'

Heres the celebrated late London bluesman Pigmeat Pete Smith (1952 - 1999) performing "Walking Blues" "Walking Blues" is a blues standard first recorded by Son House for Paramount Records in 1930 and again for the Library of Congress in 1941. It was notably covered by his one-time protégé Robert Johnson in 1936 and by many other blues musicians since.
Pete responded to an advertisement I placed in several acoustic music and blues publications inviting musicians to come over and be recorded for my archive and he came over to my home for a video recording session in February 1998. He was a very gifted and warm affable performer and I will always remember those couple of hours I spent in his company recording the 90 odd minutes of his repertoire I was able to capture that afternoon. Beyond this one meeting I never got to meet him again.I first heard of his death in 1999 whilst having a telephone discussion with a blues journalist who told me he had chanced upon Pete in Londons Royal Free Hospital whilst visiting a ftriend,He described how poorly Pete had looked (he was very yellow faced).Pete tragicaly had discovered in the very late stages that he had a liver related cancer,and apparently he had died within a few days of discovering he was chronicaly ill. I hope this video serves as a small tribute to this very individual blues performer who mostly played his own original blues and was well known in Britain and Europe..

Directed by Tony Palmer, the film incorporates pieces of six performances with narration by BBC announcer Patrick Allen, along with interviews with the band members themselves, showcasing their playing abilities. The film has often been criticized for both its mediocre sound and visual effects. In 2005, a special extended edition of the concert appeared featuring full versions of all songs separated from the narration and interviews. The new version featured digitally remastered sound and video including three bonus songs.

Edward Keith Smith was born in Melbourne in 1917. He was taken out of school at age 13 as his parents could not afford to keep him there. He went to work in a foundry, doing painful and exhausting work, before being offered an apprenticeship as a signwriter. He started selling his comedy sketches to radio stations and appearing in radio plays for the ABC. He served in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands during World War II. On discharge in 1946 he moved to Sydney, where his career as an actor and writer took off. He was also associated for many years with network personality Bert Newton on the long running New Faces talent show, and on Bert’s night-time variety program. During the late seventies, Smith also hosted his own Tonight Show on NWS-9 in Adelaide. Smith is currently chairman and patron of the GTV Foundation. Pete responded to an advertisement I placed in several acoustic music and blues publications inviting musicians to come over and be recorded for my archive and he came over to my home for a video recording session in February 1998. He was a very gifted and warm affable performer and I will always remember those couple of hours I spent in his company recording the 90 odd minutes of his repertoire I was able to capture that afternoon. Beyond this one meeting I never got to meet him again.I first heard of his death in 1999 whilst having a telephone discussion with a blues journalist who told me he had chanced upon Pete in Londons Royal Free Hospital whilst visiting a ftriend,He described how poorly Pete had looked (he was very yellow faced).Pete tragicaly had discovered in the very late stages that he had a liver related cancer,and apparently he had died within a few days of discovering he was chronicaly ill. I hope this video serves as a small tribute to this very individual blues performer who mostly played his own original blues and was well known in Britain and Europe..

He is primarily known for his work with GTV-9 Melbourne as their announcer, including being the announcer on the nationally screened quiz show Sale of the Century for twenty-one years. Upon leaving school, Smith joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a messenger boy before progressing through the ranks to an announcer on the home service and Radio Australia. On radio in the 1960s, Pete worked with radio station 3AK as a "Good Guy" and with Bert Newton on the Greater 3UZ as it was known during the seventies. You've got an idea for an amazing new feature or practice that's going to save your company both time and money, but it's too 'cutting edge'; your management fears the unfamiliar and you are cruelly stifled.
"It doesn't work like that in Enterprise" is a passionate and motivational story about my journey as a developer in the face of one of the worst fallacies in our industry. The extremes of my experience will make you laugh & cry in equal measure, and maybe help put your own frustrations into perspective.
