This is a list of Chinese astronauts (or 'taikonauts'), people trained by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. As the Chinese space program developed during the sixties, various proposals for manned spacecraft were made.
The first manned spacecraft proposed by the People's Republic of China during the late 1960s and early 70s was the Shuguang One which was expected to bring the first Chinese astronaut in 1973 into space. For this programme 19 astronauts were selected in 1971. However, shortly after these plans were made, several leading scientists attached to the project were denounced during the Cultural Revolution, bringing progress to a standstill. Instead, NASA astronaut Taylor Wang became the first Chinese person in space in 1985.
For China’s current Shenzhou program several astronauts were selected. In 2003, Yang Liwei was launched aboard Shenzhou 5, becoming the first person sent into space by the Chinese space program. This achievement made China the third country to independently send humans into space. During the Shenzhou 7 mission in 2008, Zhai Zhigang became the first Chinese citizen to carry out a spacewalk. In 2012, Liu Yang became the first Chinese woman to be launched into space when she was launched aboard Shenzhou 9.

China launches manned spacecraft Shenzhou 11 into orbit
Two Chinese astronauts depart for the historic Shenzhou-11 space mission. The spacecraft will blast off at 7:30 am Monday, and the astronauts will return after 33 days in space. The mission is regarded as a crucial step for China's ambitions to build a space station in the early 2020s.
BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese astronaut on Saturday performed the nation's first-ever spacewalk, the latest milestone in an ambitious program that is increasingly rivaling the United States and Russia in its rapid expansion. Mission commander Zhai Zhigang floated out of the orbiter module's hatch in the spacewalk, shown live on state broadcaster CCTV. Tethered to handles attached to the Shenzhou 7 ship's orbital module's exterior, Zhai remained outside for about 13 minutes before climbing back inside and closing the hatch behind him. "Shenzhou 7 has left the module, physically feel very good. Greetings to all the people of the nation and all the people of the world," Zhai said. Fellow astronaut Liu Boming also emerged briefly from the capsule to hand Zhai a Chinese flag that he waved f...

The astronauts expressed confidence and resolve for the mission again before stepping onto the launch pad. The Shenzhou-11 manned spacecraft is scheduled to be launched at 7:30 Monday Beijing Time. It will be Jing's third spaceflight following his Shenzhou-7 mission in September 2008 and Shenzhou-9 mission in March 2012. This is the first time Chen, who was born in central China’s Henan Province in 1978, is a crew member of China's manned spacecraft program. With a safe flight record of 1,500 hours as an air force pilot, Chen was selected for the Shenzhou-11 mission in June 2016. Shenzhou-11 is expected to dock wit...

Chinese astronauts the Taikonauts are on the biggest mission of all – blasting off into space. After a rigorous training programme on Earth, a very few Chinese astronauts, the Taikonauts, have been chosen for the ultimate adventure - to walk in space. Life on board China's space rockets is similar in many ways to life on a Russian or American one, but there are some unique aspects - specially prepared Kung Pao chicken, and the use of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) to help ensure the Taikonauts survive their walk in space in the best of health. CNN's David McKenzie takes us inside China's Space City - where we meet three Chinese astronauts and get a peek at China's most expensive and ambitious project yet.
Following the launch of China's Tiangong-2 space lab on Thursday, Chinese astronauts are scheduled to work and live in space for a record 33 days starting from mid-October. The announcement was made by Wu Ping, deputy director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, at a Wednesday press conference. Wu said this will mark the longest-ever spaceflight for Chinese astronauts. "Shenzhou-11 is our sixth manned space flight. Our astronauts will travel on Shenzhou-11 to dock with the Tiangong-2 space lab. They will stay on Tiangong-2 for 30 days. If we add the three days' travel, the total time in space will be 33 days, up from the 15 days of the Shenzhou-10 mission. So this will be the longest manned space flight in China's history," said Wu. Tiangong-2 is scheduled to be launched at 2...

In 2008, China became only the 3rd nation to perform an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) from a spacecraft. An overview of the Chinese spacesuit and life support system were assessed from video downlinks during their EVA; from those assessments, spacesuit characteristics were identified. The spacesuits were compared against the Russian Orlan Spacesuit and the U.S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU). China's plans for future missions also were presented.
