Elizabeth Jennings

Elizabeth Jennings (18 July 1926 – 26 October 2001) was an English poet.

Life and career

Jennings was born in Boston, Lincolnshire. When she was six, her family moved to Oxford, where she remained for the rest of her life. There she later attended St Anne's College. After graduation, she became a writer.

It was a yellow voice, a high, shrill treble in the nursery
White always and high, I remember it so,
White cupboard, off-white table, mugs, dolls’ faces
And I was four or five. The garden could have been
Miles away. We were taken down to the green
Asparagus beds, the cut lawn, and the smell of it
Comes each summer after rain when white returns. Our bird,
A canary called Peter, sang behind bars. The black and white cat
Curled and snoozed by the fire and danger was far away.

Jennings' early poetry was published in journals such as Oxford Poetry, New English Weekly, The Spectator, Outposts and Poetry Review, but her first book was not published until she was 27. The lyrical poets she cited as having influenced her were Hopkins, Auden, Graves and Muir. Her second book, A Way of Looking, won the Somerset Maugham award and marked a turning point, as the prize money allowed her to spend nearly three months in Rome, which was a revelation. It brought a new dimension to her religious belief and inspired her imagination.

Elizabeth Jennings (The Americans)

Elizabeth Jennings (real name Nadezhda; Russian: Надеҗда) is a fictional character in the American television drama series The Americans on FX, as the series female lead. She was created by show runner Joe Weisberg and is portrayed by Keri Russell. Elizabeth is a KGB agent who, with her husband Philip (Matthew Rhys), is an illegal posing as a travel agent in the Washington D.C. area.

Background

Elizabeth was born Nadezhda in Smolensk, the daughter of a coal miner and a bookkeeper for the local Communist Party committee. Her family suffered great privation both during and after the Great Patriotic War, in which her father was killed. Elizabeth grew up believing her father to be one of the honored war dead, until her mother revealed that he had actually been shot as a deserter. When she was 14 her mother was bedridden with diphtheria, forcing Elizabeth to nurse her while still attending school.

As a teenager, the KGB approached Elizabeth as a candidate for the Illegals Program. Although prohibited from telling anyone, Elizabeth surreptitiously managed to consult with her mother about her decision, who unhesitatingly told her that she must do her duty for her motherland. She trained to become an undercover agent until she is 22. During this time, she is raped by one of her captains in the KGB, Timoshev. In 1965, Elizabeth rejected the first KGB agent proposed to be her husband in America, before eventually accepting "Phillip Jennings" (Mischa) to be her partner. They move to America under false identities and take up work in a travel agency. Elizabeth meets and recruits civil rights activist Gregory to the KGB and has an ongoing affair with him. She gives birth to her and Phillip's first child, Paige, in 1967, and their second child, Henry, some years later.

Brian Cox (footballer)

Brian Roy Cox (born 7 May 1961) is an English former professional footballer born in Sheffield, who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United.

Cox started his career as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday, making his debut as a 17-year-old in a 1–1 draw against Oxford United in the Football League Third Division. After making 26 appearances in all competitions, he left for Huddersfield Town. Cox helped Mick Buxton's side gain promotion to the Football League Second Division, though by the time he left after 213 league games they had returned to the Third, but he may be best remembered for a game against Manchester City in 1987 when three players, Paul Stewart, David White and Tony Adcock, all scored hat-tricks as Huddersfield lost 10–1. He went on to play for Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United, where he was part of the team that won promotion from the Fourth Division in the 1990–91 season. He later played for Buxton.

Brian Cox (physicist)

Brian Edward Cox, OBE (born 3 March 1968) is an English physicist, and Advanced Fellow of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. He is best known to the public as the presenter of science programmes, especially the Wonders of... series and for popular science books, such as Why Does E=mc²? and The Quantum Universe. Cox has been described as the natural successor for BBC's scientific programming by both David Attenborough and the late Patrick Moore. Before his academic career, Cox was a keyboard player for the bands D:Ream and Dare.

Early life and education

Cox was born in the Royal Oldham Hospital, later living in Chadderton, Oldham, from 1971, Cox's parents worked in Yorkshire bank, his mother as a cashier and his father as a middle-manager in the same branch. He attended the independent Hulme Grammar School in Oldham from 1979 to 1986. Cox revealed on The Jonathan Ross Show that he performed poorly on his Maths A-level: "I got a D ... I was really not very good ... I found out you need to practice." He cites a lack of interest and fledgling band commitments as the reason for the result.
