The Escapist is a 2002 film directed by Gillies MacKinnon and written by Nick Perry.

The film is a thriller and stars Jonny Lee Miller, Andy Serkis and Gary Lewis.

Synopsis

Denis Hopkins (Jonny Lee Miller) seems to have the perfect life, a job as a pilot, a beautiful home and wife Valerie (Paloma Baeza) who is expecting their first child. One night, Denis and Valerie's home is broken into by a borderline psychotic thief named Ricky Barnes (Andy Serkis) who shoots and kills Valerie, coldly saying to Denis: 'I'm going to let you live'. Valerie dies while being transported to the hospital, and the baby narrowly survives childbirth, leaving Denis devastated. Barnes is sentenced to twenty years in Sullom Voe Prison, which is on a remote island in the middle of the North Sea. Denis is not satisfied with the sentence, considering Barnes shows no remorse and openly mocks Denis in court.

Three months later, Denis has fallen into a pit of depression, refusing to be a father to his daughter; Amy, who is being raised by his brother and sister-in-law, one day he is out flying his plane, and switches off his engines letting it glide through the air, seemingly committing suicide, leaving his home and his daughter to his brother and sister-in-law.

The Escapist (website)

The Escapist is a web resource site that advocates and supports role-playing games (RPGs) as a social and educational activity, and works to educate the public on the true nature of gaming and dispel myths and misunderstandings about the hobby. It is one of a handful of sites that promote RPGs as an activity rather than advocating or supporting any specific game systems.

The site was created in December 1995 by William J. Walton and has been regularly updated for more than a decade. Originally titled The Gaming Advocacy Website, it began as a research project for a technical writing class. In April 1996, the site was expanded into an online zine devoted to role-playing and collectible card games, and shortly after, the rest of the material was scrapped and the site focused entirely on gaming advocacy.

Other examples of independent RPG Advocacy sites which have been cited in the media include the Shakespearean Eclectic Archive and the GAMA "Gaming & Education" site. Such sites counter the efforts of anti-game advocates including Patricia Pulling.

Brian Roy Cox (born 7 May 1961) is an English former professional footballer born in Sheffield, who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United.

Cox started his career as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday, making his debut as a 17-year-old in a 1–1 draw against Oxford United in the Football League Third Division. After making 26 appearances in all competitions, he left for Huddersfield Town. Cox helped Mick Buxton's side gain promotion to the Football League Second Division, though by the time he left after 213 league games they had returned to the Third, but he may be best remembered for a game against Manchester City in 1987 when three players, Paul Stewart, David White and Tony Adcock, all scored hat-tricks as Huddersfield lost 10–1. He went on to play for Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United, where he was part of the team that won promotion from the Fourth Division in the 1990–91 season. He later played for Buxton.

Brian Cox (physicist)

Brian Edward Cox, OBE (born 3 March 1968) is an English physicist, and Advanced Fellow of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. He is best known to the public as the presenter of science programmes, especially the Wonders of... series and for popular science books, such as Why Does E=mc²? and The Quantum Universe. Cox has been described as the natural successor for BBC's scientific programming by both David Attenborough and the late Patrick Moore. Before his academic career, Cox was a keyboard player for the bands D:Ream and Dare.

Early life and education

Cox was born in the Royal Oldham Hospital, later living in Chadderton, Oldham, from 1971, Cox's parents worked in Yorkshire bank, his mother as a cashier and his father as a middle-manager in the same branch. He attended the independent Hulme Grammar School in Oldham from 1979 to 1986. Cox revealed on The Jonathan Ross Show that he performed poorly on his Maths A-level: "I got a D ... I was really not very good ... I found out you need to practice." He cites a lack of interest and fledgling band commitments as the reason for the result.
