Jock Fairweather: Young Business Person of the Year finalist

Jock Fairweather - one of five finalists in the Singapore Airlines Award for Young Business Person of the Year advocates – is founder of Little Tokyo Two, an entrepreneurial community located in the heart of Brisbane which aims to engineer "creative collisions" with industry and government.

Little Tokyo Two began life in Spring Hill in 2014 and this month (October), it launched its fourth site at The Capital, Brisbane City Council initiative overlooking Queen St Mall.

Little Tokyo Two now has hundreds of members and has gained a reputation as Australia's fastest growing community of innovators, creators and entrepreneurs.

Jock is no stranger to bold ventures. While still a teenager he studied at the London College of Fashion and became a luxury shoe designer mixing with the likes of Jimmy Choo and other fashion elites. He sold his label to a Swiss Equity Conglomerate at 21 and remained as creative director before returning to Brisbane in mid-2014. He started the Little Tokyo Two with a group of 10 friends.

Word soon got out and to date 500-plus businesses have evolved out of the collaborative workspaces.

Jock's ultimate goal is for Little Tokyo Two to become the support system of SEQ by continuing to open spaces and building communities in Brisbane and regional Queensland.

Andy Gourley: Business Person of the Year finalist

As an accountant by day and skateboarding youth worker at night, Andy Gourley saw a need for young people to be safeguarded and in his own words 'just did something' about it.  Andy – one of five finalists in the Channel 7 Award for Business Person of the Year in the 2016 Lord Mayor's Business Awards - is the founder and CEO of Red Frogs Australia.

Red Frogs was established in 1997 and is a support program for young people aged 15–25. It recognises the culture of young people is dominated by alcohol and that excessive consumption of alcohol and other substances can lead to dangerous and life altering behaviours.

The Red Frogs mission is to provide a positive peer presence in alcohol-fuelled environments, like Schoolies week celebrations, where young people gather, educate young people on safe partying behaviours, and promote and provide non-alcoholic and/or diversionary activities to engage young people in these environments.

A QUT Business graduate, Andy's Red Frog Australia Schoolies program now supports 17-plus locations where volunteers assist in providing diversionary entertainment, cooking pancake breakfasts and safely walking people back to their rooms.

The Red Frogs Schools Education Program also visits schools and universities to encourage responsible drinking and help young people become substance aware.

Joe Andon, Vuly Trampolines.

Joe Andon: Business Person of the Year finalist

Joe Andon – one of five finalists in the Channel 7 Award for Business Person of the Year in the 2016 Lord Mayor's Business Awards - is the CEO of Vuly Trampolines.

Born in Bethlehem, Palestine, Joe came to Australia with his parents as a young child and grew up in Brisbane. The beginnings of Vuly took the form of Trampolines Australia, which he started at just 19. Joe developed an online business, building a website and selling trampolines from his bedroom at his parents' house until he had enough money to open a warehouse.

In the eight years since then he has turned Vuly Trampolines into one of Australia's largest outdoor play companies selling products worldwide.

In 2013, Vuly invented the trampoline Leaf Spring system, solving the coil and frame collision problems that plagued generations of trampolines and has revolutionised the industry.

Two years later Vuly redeveloped its Leaf Springs for Vuly Fusion, the world's first seamless trampoline park. After installing Fusion into SkyZone, injury rates reduced by 99% and 1,000 parks are now planned for around the world.

Joe and Vuly are recognised as global leaders in trampoline safety and aesthetic progress. The company won the Australian Good Design Award in 2014 and earlier this year Vuly was one of only four Australian companies selected by Google and Deloitte as case studies to be presented to the Prime Minister's office on digital strategy.

The Lord Mayor's Business Awards 2016 winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner at Brisbane's City Hall on Friday 28 October. Visit www.lmba.com.au for more information and details on all the finalists in the 2016 Lord Mayor's Business Awards.
