Germany has a much lower crime rate and fewer people in prison than the United States. How does Germany do that? Is it because their prisons are different than ours? Is there anything we could learn from them? Find out.
District Attorney Rosen is an experienced prosecutor and a recognized leader in criminal justice reform. His mission for the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is to vigorously pursue justice in a way that is fair and treats everyone with respect. His core values are service, hard work, transparency and integrity.
Since arriving in the Bay Area, Mr. Rosen has been active in the community. He served as president of a large synagogue, taught trial advocacy at Santa Clara University Law School and trained police officers in report-writing.

Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). Previous offenses included breaking a playboy bunny's nose in Hugh Hefner's mansion during a trip to the USA, and alleged drug dealing during a stay in London. After the gold robbery, he fled to Iraq via Moscow where he was jailed, tortured, and finally handed over to Germany.
VICE Germany was the only camera team admitted during his stay in prison. In Xatar in Prison, we discuss his newly-found religious beliefs, follow him around during a typical day in jail, and attend a group therapy session. While assuring everyone that he has changed, his and his labels' music continue to spread messages of crime and violence. One of his most notorious music videos showed the exact circumstances of the gold robbery months before he actually committed the crime.

5) JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison, Germany
Germany is known for high quality, and this shows in their prisons.
JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison in Hamburg, is probably their most luxury prison.
Renovated & reopened in 2011, its designed for long serving inmates.
The spacious cells include a bed, couch, and private shower & toilet.
Prisoners also have machines to do their laundry, a range of activities and a small conference room.
4) Justice Center Leoben, Austria
This modern looking building definitely wouldn't scare any criminal.
And if first looks can be deceiving then the inscription at the front of the prison which reads "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." definitely confirms this prison is a nice one.
To help keep this prisons peaceful atmosphere, it only detains people who committed non violent crimes.
Each prisoner is given a clean modern single cell, with a private bathroom, kitchenette, and a television.
Prison activities include a gym, basketball court and outdoor recreation area.
Since these prisoners aren't the most violent, all areas of the prison can be enjoyed peacefully.
3) Sollentuna Prison, Sweden
From the country that gave us Ikea, the inside of this prison definitely has that Ikea show room touch.
This modern top of line prison is better than most homes.
Inmates cells have comfortable mattresses and private bathrooms.
A typical day for a prisoner here would be to hit the gym, take a nice shower, cook up a nice warm meal in the kitchen then kick back and relax on the couch & watch your favorite TV shows.
The prison has been criticized for being too lenient however Sweden’s prison authorities are quick to point out that every square inch of the prison can be seen on security cameras.
2) Bastoy Prison, Norway
Yes this looks more like someone enjoying a weekend away rather than a prison.
Bastoy Prison in Norway is a minimum security prison & houses inmates who haven't committed too serious crimes.
If you're wondering where the fences are, they're not really needed.
You see the prison is its own island, & the only way in or out is by boat.
This allows the inmates to roam about the beautiful landscape & enjoy activities such as sunbathing, tennis, fishing and horseback riding.
Rather than being locked up in cells, they live in their own little cottages & work on the prison farm.
Surprisingly the re-offending rates have been reported at 16%, compared to a European average of around 70%.
So regardless if you think this prison is too nice, it accomplishes it's goal of correcting inmates to law abiding citizens.
1) Halden Prison, Norway
This maximum security prison in Norway is very luxurious.
It doesn't detain small time criminals, instead the inmates in this prison are people convicted of the worst crimes such as rape & murder.
Each prisoners spacious cell has a flat-screen TV, a toilet, shower, mini-fridge, and unbarred vertical windows that let in more light.
Prisoners share kitchens and living rooms every 10–12 cells, and while the prison provides the food the prisoners can also buy ingredients and make their own meals.
Inmates are encouraged to take as much time as possible out of their cells.
Prisoners have an incentive of 53 kroner which is about $10 to leave their cells.
There is an "Activities House" which allows prisons to jog, play football, learn woodwork, cook, & have music lessons.
There is also a fully equipped recording studio where inmates can record their own music and have the opportunity for it to the broadcast by a local radio station.
A library with books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs, and a gym with a rock-climbing wall are also available.
However should this not be enough for prisoners, they also receive questionnaires that ask how their prison experience can be improved.

Russia's Toughest Prison - The Condemned [ Documentary HD 2016 ]
In 2001, soon after Mark Franchetti arrived in Russia as the Sunday Times correspondent, he went on a remarkable assignment to Penal Colony 56. It was the first time any journalist, let alone a foreign reporter, had gained access. It was the beginning of an unusual relationship that Mark forged with the prison governor, Subkan Dadashiov.
Mark and Nick Read met working on a documentary for the BBC: ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ about Andrei Lugovoi, who was accused of the murder & polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK. The film was widely acclaimed, and Mark and Nick forged a uniquely collaborative filmmaking partnership, going on to develop several more films together.
Both were committed to finding new audiences and platforms for their films, and became fascinated by the possibilities of longer form story-telling, and the potential of making feature length documentaries for the cinema. They discussed the possibility of re-visiting Penal Colony 56 in February 2012, and a phone call to the governor suggested that he would agree.
Every single man there is a murderer. Some mad, some bad, and some who just lost their minds in the wrong place and time. This first trip was scheduled at just 10 days. After meeting nearly 100 of the 260 inmates in the first few days, instinct had to guide us to the strongest characters – but then there was a feast of riches.
Visually as the cameraman, Nick was intent on capturing the claustrophobia and textures of this decaying institution, built in Soviet times, full of atmosphere. There was never a moment of silence there – the air filled with human sounds, and of locks turning, doors slamming.
One of the first ‘lifers’ Mark & Nick met was confined to a single man cell, 23 hours a day for the rest of his life. Yet, he told us, he was ‘too busy to talk to us’. Initially we thought him one of the mad, but in time we learnt that one of the main survival skills for these prisoners is a strict regime. To disturb it was unthinkable for this inmate, and we regrettably were unable to persuade him to take part.
Returning to see our original cast meant that Mark could draw them out even more in interview, to fulfill a mission to see ‘inside their souls’ while looking at the whites of their eyes. Eventually though, we could leave – most of the prisoners will remain with little hope of release until their dying day.
Most of all we hope that the testimony of these forgotten men, set in the unique atmosphere of their remote habitat, provides a story that will live long in the memory.

Prisons in Germany
The prisons in Germany are run solely by the federal states, although governed by a federal law. The aim of prison confinement in Germany is twofold: emphasis is placed on enabling prisoners to lead a life of "social responsibility free of crime" upon release, but society is also to be protected from further acts of crime by the guilty.
Organization
The head offices for the state prison services are in the respective state justice ministry. There, a prison service department controls the organisation of the prison service, personnel matters, basic and advanced training for prison staff, budgets, construction, cooperation in prison service legislation, the employment of prisoners, and vocational training and education for prisoners. It also reviews petitions and complaints and its representatives visit and inspect the prisons regularly. There is no mid-level authority anymore between the Ministry of Justice and the prisons. This direct contact facilitates decision-making and ensures the ministry is close to the life of the prison service.

It doesn't detain small time criminals, instead the inmates in this prison are people convicted of the worst crimes such as rape & murder. Each prisoners spacious cell has a flat-screen TV, a toilet, shower, mini-fridge, and unbarred vertical windows that let in more light. Prisoners share kitchens and living rooms every 10–12 cells, and while the prison provides the food the prisoners can also buy ingredients and make their own meals. Inmates are encouraged to take as much time as possible out of their cells. Prisoners have an incentive of 53 kroner which is about $10 to leave their cells. There is an "Activities House" which allows prisons to jog, play football, learn woodwork, cook, & have music lessons. There is also a fully equipped recording studio where inmates can record their own music and have the opportunity for it to the broadcast by a local radio station. A library with books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs, and a gym with a rock-climbing wall are also available. However should this not be enough for prisoners, they also receive questionnaires that ask how their prison experience can be improved. It was the first time any journalist, let alone a foreign reporter, had gained access. It was the beginning of an unusual relationship that Mark forged with the prison governor, Subkan Dadashiov. Mark and Nick Read met working on a documentary for the BBC: ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ about Andrei Lugovoi, who was accused of the murder & polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK. The film was widely acclaimed, and Mark and Nick forged a uniquely collaborative filmmaking partnership, going on to develop several more films together. Both were committed to finding new audiences and platforms for their films, and became fascinated by the possibilities of longer form story-telling, and the potential of making feature length documentaries for the cinema. They discussed the possibility of re-visiting Penal Colony 56 in February 2012, and a phone call to the governor suggested that he would agree. Every single man there is a murderer. Some mad, some bad, and some who just lost their minds in the wrong place and time. This first trip was scheduled at just 10 days. After meeting nearly 100 of the 260 inmates in the first few days, instinct had to guide us to the strongest characters – but then there was a feast of riches. Visually as the cameraman, Nick was intent on capturing the claustrophobia and textures of this decaying institution, built in Soviet times, full of atmosphere. There was never a moment of silence there – the air filled with human sounds, and of locks turning, doors slamming. One of the first ‘lifers’ Mark & Nick met was confined to a single man cell, 23 hours a day for the rest of his life. Yet, he told us, he was ‘too busy to talk to us’. Initially we thought him one of the mad, but in time we learnt that one of the main survival skills for these prisoners is a strict regime. To disturb it was unthinkable for this inmate, and we regrettably were unable to persuade him to take part. Returning to see our original cast meant that Mark could draw them out even more in interview, to fulfill a mission to see ‘inside their souls’ while looking at the whites of their eyes. Eventually though, we could leave – most of the prisoners will remain with little hope of release until their dying day. Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). Previous offenses included breaking a playboy bunny's nose in Hugh Hefner's mansion during a trip to the USA, and alleged drug dealing during a stay in London. After the gold robbery, he fled to Iraq via Moscow where he was jailed, tortured, and finally handed over to Germany. VICE Germany was the only camera team admitted during his stay in prison. 5) JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison, Germany
Germany is known for high quality, and this shows in their prisons.
JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison in Hamburg, is probably their most luxury prison.
Renovated & reopened in 2011, its designed for long serving inmates.
The spacious cells include a bed, couch, and private shower & toilet.
Prisoners also have machines to do their laundry, a range of activities and a small conference room.
4) Justice Center Leoben, Austria
This modern looking building definitely wouldn't scare any criminal.
And if first looks can be deceiving then the inscription at the front of the prison which reads "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." definitely confirms this prison is a nice one.
To help keep this prisons peaceful atmosphere, it only detains people who committed non violent crimes.
Each prisoner is given a clean modern single cell, with a private bathroom, kitchenette, and a television.
Prison activities include a gym, basketball court and outdoor recreation area.
Since these prisoners aren't the most violent, all areas of the prison can be enjoyed peacefully.
3) Sollentuna Prison, Sweden
From the country that gave us Ikea, the inside of this prison definitely has that Ikea show room touch.
This modern top of line prison is better than most homes.
Inmates cells have comfortable mattresses and private bathrooms.
A typical day for a prisoner here would be to hit the gym, take a nice shower, cook up a nice warm meal in the kitchen then kick back and relax on the couch & watch your favorite TV shows.

Yes this looks more like someone enjoying a weekend away rather than a prison.
Bastoy Prison in Norway is a minimum security prison & houses inmates who haven't committed too serious crimes.
If you're wondering where the fences are, they're not really needed.
You see the prison is its own island, & the only way in or out is by boat.
This allows the inmates to roam about the beautiful landscape & enjoy activities such as sunbathing, tennis, fishing and horseback riding.
Rather than being locked up in cells, they live in their own little cottages & work on the prison farm.
Surprisingly the re-offending rates have been reported at 16%, compared to a European average of around 70%.
So regardless if you think this prison is too nice, it accomplishes it's goal of correcting inmates to law abiding citizens.

It doesn't detain small time criminals, instead the inmates in this prison are people convicted of the worst crimes such as rape & murder.
Each prisoners spacious cell has a flat-screen TV, a toilet, shower, mini-fridge, and unbarred vertical windows that let in more light.
Prisoners share kitchens and living rooms every 10–12 cells, and while the prison provides the food the prisoners can also buy ingredients and make their own meals.
Inmates are encouraged to take as much time as possible out of their cells.
Prisoners have an incentive of 53 kroner which is about $10 to leave their cells.
There is an "Activities House" which allows prisons to jog, play football, learn woodwork, cook, & have music lessons.
There is also a fully equipped recording studio where inmates can record their own music and have the opportunity for it to the broadcast by a local radio station.
A library with books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs, and a gym with a rock-climbing wall are also available.
However should this not be enough for prisoners, they also receive questionnaires that ask how their prison experience can be improved.

5) JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison, Germany
Germany is known for high quality, and this shows in their prisons.
JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison in Hamburg, is probably their most luxury prison.
Renovated & reopened in 2011, its designed for long serving inmates.
The spacious cells include a bed, couch, and private shower & toilet.
Prisoners also have machines to do their laundry, a range of activities and a small conference room.
4) Justice Center Leoben, Austria
This modern looking building definitely wouldn't scare any criminal.
And if first looks can be deceiving then the inscription at the front of the prison which reads "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." definitely confirms this prison is a nice one.
To help keep this prisons peaceful atmosphere, it only detains people who committed non violent crimes.
Each prisoner is given a clean modern single cell, with a private bathroom, kitchenette, and a television.
Prison activities include a gym, basketball court and outdoor recreation area.
Since these prisoners aren't the most violent, all areas of the prison can be enjoyed peacefully.
3) Sollentuna Prison, Sweden
From the country that gave us Ikea, the inside of this prison definitely has that Ikea show room touch.
This modern top of line prison is better than most homes.
Inmates cells have comfortable mattresses and private bathrooms.
A typical day for a prisoner here would be to hit the gym, take a nice shower, cook up a nice warm meal in the kitchen then kick back and relax on the couch & watch your favorite TV shows.

Russia's Toughest Prison - The Condemned [ Documentary HD 2016 ]
In 2001, soon after Mark Franchetti arrived in Russia as the Sunday Times correspondent, he went on a remarkable assignment to Penal Colony 56. It was the first time any journalist, let alone a foreign reporter, had gained access. It was the beginning of an unusual relationship that Mark forged with the prison governor, Subkan Dadashiov.
Mark and Nick Read met working on a documentary for the BBC: ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ about Andrei Lugovoi, who was accused of the murder & polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK. The film was widely acclaimed, and Mark and Nick forged a uniquely collaborative filmmaking partnership, going on to develop several more films together.
Both were committed to finding new audiences and platforms for their films, and became fascinated by the possibilities of longer form story-telling, and the potential of making feature length documentaries for the cinema. They discussed the possibility of re-visiting Penal Colony 56 in February 2012, and a phone call to the governor suggested that he would agree.
Every single man there is a murderer. Some mad, some bad, and some who just lost their minds in the wrong place and time. This first trip was scheduled at just 10 days. After meeting nearly 100 of the 260 inmates in the first few days, instinct had to guide us to the strongest characters – but then there was a feast of riches.
Visually as the cameraman, Nick was intent on capturing the claustrophobia and textures of this decaying institution, built in Soviet times, full of atmosphere. There was never a moment of silence there – the air filled with human sounds, and of locks turning, doors slamming.
One of the first ‘lifers’ Mark & Nick met was confined to a single man cell, 23 hours a day for the rest of his life. Yet, he told us, he was ‘too busy to talk to us’. Initially we thought him one of the mad, but in time we learnt that one of the main survival skills for these prisoners is a strict regime. To disturb it was unthinkable for this inmate, and we regrettably were unable to persuade him to take part.
Returning to see our original cast meant that Mark could draw them out even more in interview, to fulfill a mission to see ‘inside their souls’ while looking at the whites of their eyes. Eventually though, we could leave – most of the prisoners will remain with little hope of release until their dying day.
Most of all we hope that the testimony of these forgotten men, set in the unique atmosphere of their remote habitat, provides a story that will live long in the memory.

Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). District Attorney Rosen is an experienced prosecutor and a recognized leader in criminal justice reform. His mission for the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office is to vigorously pursue justice in a way that is fair and treats everyone with respect. His core values are service, hard work, transparency and integrity.
Since arriving in the Bay Area, Mr. Rosen has been active in the community. He served as president of a large synagogue, taught trial advocacy at Santa Clara University Law School and trained police officers in report-writing.

Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). Previous offenses included breaking a playboy bunny's nose in Hugh Hefner's mansion during a trip to the USA, and alleged drug dealing during a stay in London. After the gold robbery, he fled to Iraq via Moscow where he was jailed, tortured, and finally handed over to Germany.
VICE Germany was the only camera team admitted during his stay in prison. In Xatar in Prison, we discuss his newly-found religious beliefs, follow him around during a typical day in jail, and attend a group therapy session. While assuring everyone that he has changed, his and his labels' music continue to spread messages of crime and violence. One of his most notorious music videos showed the exact circumstances of the gold robbery months before he actually committed the crime.

5) JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison, Germany
Germany is known for high quality, and this shows in their prisons.
JVA Fuhlsbuettel Prison in Hamburg, is probably their most luxury prison.
Renovated & reopened in 2011, its designed for long serving inmates.
The spacious cells include a bed, couch, and private shower & toilet.
Prisoners also have machines to do their laundry, a range of activities and a small conference room.
4) Justice Center Leoben, Austria
This modern looking building definitely wouldn't scare any criminal.
And if first looks can be deceiving then the inscription at the front of the prison which reads "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." definitely confirms this prison is a nice one.
To help keep this prisons peaceful atmosphere, it only detains people who committed non violent crimes.
Each prisoner is given a clean modern single cell, with a private bathroom, kitchenette, and a television.
Prison activities include a gym, basketball court and outdoor recreation area.
Since these prisoners aren't the most violent, all areas of the prison can be enjoyed peacefully.
3) Sollentuna Prison, Sweden
From the country that gave us Ikea, the inside of this prison definitely has that Ikea show room touch.
This modern top of line prison is better than most homes.
Inmates cells have comfortable mattresses and private bathrooms.
A typical day for a prisoner here would be to hit the gym, take a nice shower, cook up a nice warm meal in the kitchen then kick back and relax on the couch & watch your favorite TV shows.
The prison has been criticized for being too lenient however Sweden’s prison authorities are quick to point out that every square inch of the prison can be seen on security cameras.
2) Bastoy Prison, Norway
Yes this looks more like someone enjoying a weekend away rather than a prison.
Bastoy Prison in Norway is a minimum security prison & houses inmates who haven't committed too serious crimes.
If you're wondering where the fences are, they're not really needed.
You see the prison is its own island, & the only way in or out is by boat.
This allows the inmates to roam about the beautiful landscape & enjoy activities such as sunbathing, tennis, fishing and horseback riding.
Rather than being locked up in cells, they live in their own little cottages & work on the prison farm.
Surprisingly the re-offending rates have been reported at 16%, compared to a European average of around 70%.
So regardless if you think this prison is too nice, it accomplishes it's goal of correcting inmates to law abiding citizens.
1) Halden Prison, Norway
This maximum security prison in Norway is very luxurious.
It doesn't detain small time criminals, instead the inmates in this prison are people convicted of the worst crimes such as rape & murder.
Each prisoners spacious cell has a flat-screen TV, a toilet, shower, mini-fridge, and unbarred vertical windows that let in more light.
Prisoners share kitchens and living rooms every 10–12 cells, and while the prison provides the food the prisoners can also buy ingredients and make their own meals.
Inmates are encouraged to take as much time as possible out of their cells.
Prisoners have an incentive of 53 kroner which is about $10 to leave their cells.
There is an "Activities House" which allows prisons to jog, play football, learn woodwork, cook, & have music lessons.
There is also a fully equipped recording studio where inmates can record their own music and have the opportunity for it to the broadcast by a local radio station.
A library with books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs, and a gym with a rock-climbing wall are also available.
However should this not be enough for prisoners, they also receive questionnaires that ask how their prison experience can be improved.

Russia's Toughest Prison - The Condemned [ Documentary HD 2016 ]
In 2001, soon after Mark Franchetti arrived in Russia as the Sunday Times correspondent, he went on a remarkable assignment to Penal Colony 56. It was the first time any journalist, let alone a foreign reporter, had gained access. It was the beginning of an unusual relationship that Mark forged with the prison governor, Subkan Dadashiov.
Mark and Nick Read met working on a documentary for the BBC: ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ about Andrei Lugovoi, who was accused of the murder & polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK. The film was widely acclaimed, and Mark and Nick forged a uniquely collaborative filmmaking partnership, going on to develop several more films together.
Both were committed to finding new audiences and platforms for their films, and became fascinated by the possibilities of longer form story-telling, and the potential of making feature length documentaries for the cinema. They discussed the possibility of re-visiting Penal Colony 56 in February 2012, and a phone call to the governor suggested that he would agree.
Every single man there is a murderer. Some mad, some bad, and some who just lost their minds in the wrong place and time. This first trip was scheduled at just 10 days. After meeting nearly 100 of the 260 inmates in the first few days, instinct had to guide us to the strongest characters – but then there was a feast of riches.
Visually as the cameraman, Nick was intent on capturing the claustrophobia and textures of this decaying institution, built in Soviet times, full of atmosphere. There was never a moment of silence there – the air filled with human sounds, and of locks turning, doors slamming.
One of the first ‘lifers’ Mark & Nick met was confined to a single man cell, 23 hours a day for the rest of his life. Yet, he told us, he was ‘too busy to talk to us’. Initially we thought him one of the mad, but in time we learnt that one of the main survival skills for these prisoners is a strict regime. To disturb it was unthinkable for this inmate, and we regrettably were unable to persuade him to take part.
Returning to see our original cast meant that Mark could draw them out even more in interview, to fulfill a mission to see ‘inside their souls’ while looking at the whites of their eyes. Eventually though, we could leave – most of the prisoners will remain with little hope of release until their dying day.
Most of all we hope that the testimony of these forgotten men, set in the unique atmosphere of their remote habitat, provides a story that will live long in the memory.

Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). Previous offenses included breaking a playboy bunny's nose in Hugh Hefner's mansion during a trip to the USA, and alleged drug dealing during a stay in London. Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. VICE Germany was the only camera team admitted during his stay in prison. While assuring everyone that he has changed, his and his labels' music continue to spread messages of crime and violence. One of his most notorious music videos showed the exact circumstances of the gold robbery months before he actually committed the crime.

Russia's Toughest Prison - The Condemned [ Documentary HD 2016 ]
In 2001, soon after Mark Franchetti arrived in Russia as the Sunday Times correspondent, he went on a remarkable assignment to Penal Colony 56. It was the first time any journalist, let alone a foreign reporter, had gained access. It was the beginning of an unusual relationship that Mark forged with the prison governor, Subkan Dadashiov.
Mark and Nick Read met working on a documentary for the BBC: ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ about Andrei Lugovoi, who was accused of the murder & polonium poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in the UK. The film was widely acclaimed, and Mark and Nick forged a uniquely collaborative filmmaking partnership, going on to develop several more films together.
Both were committed to finding new audiences and platforms for their films, and became fascinated by the possibilities of longer form story-telling, and the potential of making feature length documentaries for the cinema. They discussed the possibility of re-visiting Penal Colony 56 in February 2012, and a phone call to the governor suggested that he would agree.
Every single man there is a murderer. Some mad, some bad, and some who just lost their minds in the wrong place and time. This first trip was scheduled at just 10 days. After meeting nearly 100 of the 260 inmates in the first few days, instinct had to guide us to the strongest characters – but then there was a feast of riches.
Visually as the cameraman, Nick was intent on capturing the claustrophobia and textures of this decaying institution, built in Soviet times, full of atmosphere. There was never a moment of silence there – the air filled with human sounds, and of locks turning, doors slamming.
One of the first ‘lifers’ Mark & Nick met was confined to a single man cell, 23 hours a day for the rest of his life. Yet, he told us, he was ‘too busy to talk to us’. Initially we thought him one of the mad, but in time we learnt that one of the main survival skills for these prisoners is a strict regime. To disturb it was unthinkable for this inmate, and we regrettably were unable to persuade him to take part.
