In this episode Daniel and Mick attempt to test their preconceptions of transistor amps. It’s no secret that they both love valve amps and really don’t like using anything else. However, transistor amps – and transistor amps that also use modelling – are an important and valid part of the amp world. We keep getting asked for our opinion on them, so this is step one!
We take three low/mid-price amps – one fully transistor, one transistor/modelling hybrid and one valve amp – and use them with a range of common overdrive and distortion pedals. We also chuck in a compressor for good measure, and touch of delay here and there.
There are some surprising discoveries alongside some entirely expected outcomes!

After winning the heated Inter-High race, Sakamichi and the other Sohoku team members receive an invitation to compete in the Kumamoto Hi Province Mountain Range Race towards the end of summer. The top-tier teams from around the country compete in this race, including Sohoku’s rivals Hakone Academy (which yearns to take down Sohoku), Kyoto Fushimi, and Hiroshima Kureminami — as well as Kumamoto Daiichi High School’s team led by Shin Yoshimoto.
On the stage of Kumamoto Prefecture’s Mount Aso, the “final race” of Sohoku team, led by Kinjou, speeds up!

In this video Daniel and Mick explore some basic concepts around getting a better solo tone.
What is a better solo tone? Obviously it’s an extremely subjective topic once you bring personal likes/dislikes into play, but the one thing on which we can all surely agree is that as a very basic start point, a good solo tone begins with ‘one that can be heard’.
By contrast a ‘bad’ solo tone is one that can’t be heard, and there are many of us who have been in that situation where you step on the next pedal to make your tone soar… only to find that it just crashes! That is where we begin.

In this video Daniel and Mick explore some basic concepts around getting a better solo tone.
What is a better solo tone? Obviously it’s an extremely subjective topic once you bring personal likes/dislikes into play, but the one thing on which we can all surely agree is that as a very basic start point, a good solo tone begins with ‘one that can be heard’.
By contrast a ‘bad’ solo tone is one that can’t be heard, and there are many of us who have been in that situation where you step on the next pedal to make your tone soar… only to find that it just crashes! That is where we begin.
Throughout the video we touch on the areas of gain, EQ and relative wetness of your effects in the context of being heard for that all important solo.
