Welcome to the third installment of our ongoing Mystery Box Challenge series, where we give unsuspecting musicians a random grab-bag of gear and see what improvised sounds they can come up with. In this edition, participants Mark Guiliana (Brad Mehldua, David Bowie, Meshell Ndegeocello) and Jonathan Maron (Tupac, Maxwell, India Arie) team up to explore a spacey set of noises all centering on a Roland TR-8 Rhythm Explorer. Unlike some of our previous Mystery Box segments, this sonic exploration took a decisively more rhythmic format with a groove that will stick in your head for days.

Who is Marty Feldman
This beloved comedian, who poked fun at himself, as well as others, was born Martin Alan Feldman on July 8, 1934, in London, England. His parents were of Ukrainian Jewish heritage (from Kiev). He was the son of Cecilia (née Crook) and Myer Feldman, a gown manufacturer. Marty spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken London East End and left school at the age of 15, hoping for a career as a jazz trumpeter (his appearance in a Variety show earned him the title "the worst trumpeter in the world"). Marty Feldman had just started his comedy career, as a writer for BBC radio programs and TV shows in the late 1950s, when he married Lauretta Sullivan in January 1959 (they would stay married until his death in 1982). There's a saying: "Your face is your fortune"; Marty Feldman had received a double-whammy. His nose was mangled in his youthful years in a boxing match; his walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963. American audiences first saw Marty Feldman in Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers (1968), where he did comedy skits with Susie Ewing and the Golddiggers.
Marty Feldman became the chief writer and script editor on The Frost Report (1966–67). He co-wrote the much shown "Class" sketch with John Law, in which John Cleese, Ronnie Barker, and Ronnie Corbett faced the audience, with their descending order of height suggesting their relative social status as upper class (Cleese), middle class (Barker), and working class (Corbett).
The television sketch comedy series At Last the 1948 Show raised Feldman's profile as a performer. The other three participants – future Pythons, Graham Chapman and John Cleese and future Goody, Tim Brooke-Taylor needed a fourth cast member and had Feldman in mind. In one sketch on 1 March 1967, Feldman's character harassed a patient shop assistant (played by Cleese) for a series of fictitious books, achieving success with Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying. His character in At Last the 1948 Show seems often to be called Mr Pest, according to John Cleese. Feldman was co-author, along with Cleese, Chapman, and Brooke-Taylor of the "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch, which was written for At Last the 1948 Show.
Marty Feldman was given his own series on the BBC called Marty (1968) it featured Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Junkin, and Roland MacLeod, with Cleese as one of the writers. Feldman won two BAFTA awards. The second series in 1969 was renamed It's Marty (the second title being retained for the DVD of the show)
He appeared in a number of movies, his most-remembered role starring alongside Gene Wilder as Igor (pronounced Eye-Gor) in Young Frankenstein (1974).
Besides acting, he made his directorial debut in The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977). Beloved and popular, it seemed Marty was to enjoy a long career in the entertainment field. However, he died of a massive heart attack, caused by shellfish food poisoning, while filming Yellowbeard (1983) in Mexico City, on December 2, 1982... he was only 49.

5 Adventure touring motorcycles had just forded the Owyhee river and had to get up this difficult hill climb to start their way out of the canyon. We walked 3 Ducati Multistradas and one BMW GS up this section, but were miraculously able to ride the Terracorsa up without getting off.

Roland
Roland (Frankish: Hruodland) (died 15 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. The historical Roland was military governor of the Breton March, responsible for defending Francia's frontier against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni, which notes he was part of the Frankish rearguard killed by rebellious Basques in Iberia at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.
The story of Roland's death at Roncevaux Pass was embellished in later medieval and Renaissance literature. He became the chief paladin of the emperor Charlemagne and a central figure in the legendary material surrounding him, collectively known as the Matter of France. The first and most famous of these epic treatments was the Old French Chanson de Roland of the eleventh century.
Two masterpieces of Italian Renaissance poetry, the Orlando innamorato and Orlando furioso, are even further detached from history than the earlier Chansons. Roland is poetically associated with his sword Durendal, his horse Veillantif, and his oliphant horn.

Marty Feldman
Martin Alan "Marty" Feldman (8 July 1934 – 2 December 1982) was an English comedy writer, comedian, and actor, easily identified by his bulbous and crooked eyes. He starred in several British television comedy series, including At Last the 1948 Show and Marty, the latter of which won two BAFTA awards. He was the first Saturn Award winner for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Young Frankenstein.
Early life
Feldman was born on 8 July 1934 in the East End of London, the son of Jewish immigrants from Kiev, Ukraine, Cecilia (née Crook) and Myer Feldman, a gown manufacturer. He recalled his childhood as "solitary".
A BBC documentary explained that a botched operation for his Graves' disease resulted in his eyes being more protruded and misaligned (strabismus). Leaving school at 15, he worked at the Dreamland funfair in Margate, but had dreams of a career as a jazz trumpeter, and performed in the first group in which tenor saxophonist Tubby Hayes was a member. Feldman joked that he was "the world's worst trumpet player." By the age of 20, though, he had decided to pursue a career as a comedian.

Joey Beltram (born September 2, 1971 in Queens, New York City, United States) is an American DJ and record producer, best known for the pioneering recordings "Energy Flash" and "Mentasm".
Rave recordings
Mentasm, co-produced with Mundo Muzique and released under the artist name Second Phase in 1991, became iconic within rave culture, as it was the track that gave birth to the "mentasm riff" (also known as the "Hoover sound"): a churning, dirgelike synth pattern that wormed into techno's communal genome and has since been mutated and reused in literally thousands of records. Beltram and the "mentasm riff" are strongly associated with drum and bass, the Belgian techno scene, and the R&S record label, as well as hardcore/hard house in their various permutations since 1994. Beltram was referenced as a pioneer in the late 1990s house music scene by Daft Punk, in their song "Teachers" off their 1997 debut album, Homework and author, Simon Reynolds, credited Beltram with having "revolutionized techno twice before the age of 21," when describing both "Energy Flash" and "Mentasm" in his book Generation Ecstasy.

Viviano also stands out for his remixes such as "Let Go" by Paul Van Dyk (Vandit) and "Green Girl FNK" by Evans & Waterfall (Tenax Recordings). In 2009, he was awarded the "Trend Award" Top Italian Dj Young. In 2010, he began cooperating with well known labels such as Climatic Sound, Time has changed, Tenax, Monique Musique. His work is supported by artists such as Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Paco Osuna, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, Matthias Tanzmann, Marco Carola and many others...In summer 2011 Cristian has been the creator of the Pleiadians Ibiza movement, promoting events in various locations, hosting in his consolle artists like: Raresh, SIS, Cezar, Apollonia, Vera, Nima Gorji, Jan Krueger, Seuil, Cassy, Piticu & many more. He also became a member of the COCOLINO project created by SIS. They started collaborating in Ibiza after finding common points of view based on respect of good music. The years 2012 and 2013 are very important for Cristian's career.The 2012 begins with very important gigs around Europe, Spain, Italy, Russia, Germany, Croatia, United Kingdom he had also is own party at Punta Arabi Ibiza during the summer. Cristian is playing for the best clubs of the island, such as Sirocco, Destino, Booom and he became also the resident dj of Delicatezze at Downtown Ibiza (Cipriani). Currently, Cristian is focus on his project, Descending Order aimed at spreading the importance and power of love, creativity and the respect to the life's order as core values of life. -

Who is Marty Feldman This beloved comedian, who poked fun at himself, as well as others, was born Martin Alan Feldman on July 8, 1934, in London, England. His parents were of Ukrainian Jewish heritage (from Kiev). He was the son of Cecilia (née Crook) and Myer Feldman, a gown manufacturer. Marty spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken London East End and left school at the age of 15, hoping for a career as a jazz trumpeter (his appearance in a Variety show earned him the title "the worst trumpeter in the world"). Marty Feldman had just started his comedy career, as a writer for BBC radio programs and TV shows in the late 1950s, when he married Lauretta Sullivan in January 1959 (they would stay married until his death in 1982). 5 Adventure touring motorcycles had just forded the Owyhee river and had to get up this difficult hill climb to start their way out of the canyon. We walked 3 Ducati Multistradas and one BMW GS up this section, but were miraculously able to ride the Terracorsa up without getting off.

This beloved comedian, who poked fun at himself, as well as others, was born Martin Alan Feldman on July 8, 1934, in London, England. His parents were of Ukrainian Jewish heritage (from Kiev). Marty spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken London East End and left school at the age of 15, hoping for a career as a jazz trumpeter (his appearance in a Variety show earned him the title "the worst trumpeter in the world"). Marty Feldman had just started his comedy career, as a writer for BBC radio programs and TV shows in the late 1950s, when he married Lauretta Sullivan in January 1959 (they would stay married until his death in 1982). There's a saying: "Your face is your fortune"; Marty Feldman had received a double-whammy. His nose was mangled in his youthful years in a boxing match; his walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963. American audiences first saw Marty Feldman in Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers (1968), where he did comedy skits with Susie Ewing and the Golddiggers.
Marty Feldman became the chief writer and script editor on The Frost Report (1966–67). He co-wrote the much shown "Class" sketch with John Law, in which John Cleese, Ronnie Barker, and Ronnie Corbett faced the audience, with their descending order of height suggesting their relative social status as upper class (Cleese), middle class (Barker), and working class (Corbett).
The television sketch comedy series At Last the 1948 Show raised Feldman's profile as a performer. The other three participants – future Pythons, Graham Chapman and John Cleese and future Goody, Tim Brooke-Taylor needed a fourth cast member and had Feldman in mind. In one sketch on 1 March 1967, Feldman's character harassed a patient shop assistant (played by Cleese) for a series of fictitious books, achieving success with Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying. His character in At Last the 1948 Show seems often to be called Mr Pest, according to John Cleese. Feldman was co-author, along with Cleese, Chapman, and Brooke-Taylor of the "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch, which was written for At Last the 1948 Show.
Marty Feldman was given his own series on the BBC called Marty (1968) it featured Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Junkin, and Roland MacLeod, with Cleese as one of the writers. Feldman won two BAFTA awards. The second series in 1969 was renamed It's Marty (the second title being retained for the DVD of the show)
He appeared in a number of movies, his most-remembered role starring alongside Gene Wilder as Igor (pronounced Eye-Gor) in Young Frankenstein (1974).
Besides acting, he made his directorial debut in The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977). Beloved and popular, it seemed Marty was to enjoy a long career in the entertainment field. However, he died of a massive heart attack, caused by shellfish food poisoning, while filming Yellowbeard (1983) in Mexico City, on December 2, 1982... he was only 49.

Marty Feldman had just started his comedy career, as a writer for BBC radio programs and TV shows in the late 1950s, when he married Lauretta Sullivan in January 1959 (they would stay married until his death in 1982). There's a saying: "Your face is your fortune"; Marty Feldman had received a double-whammy. His nose was mangled in his youthful years in a boxing match; his walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963. American audiences first saw Marty Feldman in Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers (1968), where he did comedy skits with Susie Ewing and the Golddiggers.
Marty Feldman became the chief writer and script editor on The Frost Report (1966–67). He co-wrote the much shown "Class" sketch with John Law, in which John Cleese, Ronnie Barker, and Ronnie Corbett faced the audience, with their descending order of height suggesting their relative social status as upper class (Cleese), middle class (Barker), and working class (Corbett).
The television sketch comedy series At Last the 1948 Show raised Feldman's profile as a performer. The other three participants – future Pythons, Graham Chapman and John Cleese and future Goody, Tim Brooke-Taylor needed a fourth cast member and had Feldman in mind. In one sketch on 1 March 1967, Feldman's character harassed a patient shop assistant (played by Cleese) for a series of fictitious books, achieving success with Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying. His character in At Last the 1948 Show seems often to be called Mr Pest, according to John Cleese. Feldman was co-author, along with Cleese, Chapman, and Brooke-Taylor of the "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch, which was written for At Last the 1948 Show.
Marty Feldman was given his own series on the BBC called Marty (1968) it featured Tim Brooke-Taylor, John Junkin, and Roland MacLeod, with Cleese as one of the writers. Feldman won two BAFTA awards. The second series in 1969 was renamed It's Marty (the second title being retained for the DVD of the show)
He appeared in a number of movies, his most-remembered role starring alongside Gene Wilder as Igor (pronounced Eye-Gor) in Young Frankenstein (1974).
Besides acting, he made his directorial debut in The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977). Beloved and popular, it seemed Marty was to enjoy a long career in the entertainment field. However, he died of a massive heart attack, caused by shellfish food poisoning, while filming Yellowbeard (1983) in Mexico City, on December 2, 1982... he was only 49.

Who is Marty Feldman This beloved comedian, who poked fun at himself, as well as others, was born Martin Alan Feldman on July 8, 1934, in London, England. His parents were of Ukrainian Jewish heritage (from Kiev). He was the son of Cecilia (née Crook) and Myer Feldman, a gown manufacturer. Marty spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken London East End and left school at the age of 15, hoping for a career as a jazz trumpeter (his appearance in a Variety show earned him the title "the worst trumpeter in the world"). Welcome to the third installment of our ongoing Mystery Box Challenge series, where we give unsuspecting musicians a random grab-bag of gear and see what improvised sounds they can come up with. In this edition, participants Mark Guiliana (Brad Mehldua, David Bowie, Meshell Ndegeocello) and Jonathan Maron (Tupac, Maxwell, India Arie) team up to explore a spacey set of noises all centering on a Roland TR-8 Rhythm Explorer. Unlike some of our previous Mystery Box segments, this sonic exploration took a decisively more rhythmic format with a groove that will stick in your head for days.

This beloved comedian, who poked fun at himself, as well as others, was born Martin Alan Feldman on July 8, 1934, in London, England. His parents were of Ukrainian Jewish heritage (from Kiev). He was the son of Cecilia (née Crook) and Myer Feldman, a gown manufacturer. Marty spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken London East End and left school at the age of 15, hoping for a career as a jazz trumpeter (his appearance in a Variety show earned him the title "the worst trumpeter in the world"). Marty Feldman had just started his comedy career, as a writer for BBC radio programs and TV shows in the late 1950s, when he married Lauretta Sullivan in January 1959 (they would stay married until his death in 1982). There's a saying: "Your face is your fortune"; Marty Feldman had received a double-whammy. His nose was mangled in his youthful years in a boxing match; his walleyed orbs were the result of both a hyperactive thyroid and a botched operation after a car accident before his 30th birthday, in 1963. American audiences first saw Marty Feldman in Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers (1968), where he did comedy skits with Susie Ewing and the Golddiggers.
Marty Feldman became the chief writer and script editor on The Frost Report (1966–67). He co-wrote the much shown "Class" sketch with John Law, in which John Cleese, Ronnie Barker, and Ronnie Corbett faced the audience, with their descending order of height suggesting their relative social status as upper class (Cleese), middle class (Barker), and working class (Corbett).
The television sketch comedy series At Last the 1948 Show raised Feldman's profile as a performer. The other three participants – future Pythons, Graham Chapman and John Cleese and future Goody, Tim Brooke-Taylor needed a fourth cast member and had Feldman in mind. In one sketch on 1 March 1967, Feldman's character harassed a patient shop assistant (played by Cleese) for a series of fictitious books, achieving success with Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying. His character in At Last the 1948 Show seems often to be called Mr Pest, according to John Cleese. Feldman was co-author, along with Cleese, Chapman, and Brooke-Taylor of the "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch, which was written for At Last the 1948 Show.

"Our latest MIXED BY comes from another steed in Ostgut Ton official's stable of veritable techno titans, Berlin by way of New York producer Function (Dave Sumner). With over 20 years of productions under his belt—from the seminal uncredited recordings as Richard Harvey (as found on Richie Hawtin's Decks, EFX & 909 CD) and his highly productive partnership with Regis as Sandwell District to his current collection of recordings as Function, his brand of unflinching techno has driven endless parties at Berghain into serious overtime.
The mix comes courtesy of the recently deceased Great American Techno Festival, which celebrated its fifth and final edition last month. This 100 minute excerpt of Function's four hour appearance features tracks from well over two dozen of techno's top producers mixed live on three CDJs, like Cassegrain, John Tejada, Mark Broom, Joey Beltram and many more. It also spotlights the TR-909 drum machine that Function has started to incorporate into his DJ sets the past year."
