Camille Rose Garcia: Animus Chrysalis Mortis

I can never let a new Camille Rose Garcia show debut without posting about it. Just looking at the title of this one made me wish I were 3,000 miles away where I could see it (there’s a bonus Bowie portrait, for all the fans in mourning out there!).

Animus Chrysalis Mortis just opened at Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle. In the exhibition statement, she says:
For this body of work I was inspired by the surrealist and deeply symbolic films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Jungian archetypes, and Greek mythology.

I created a personal language of symbols, then made a card set and selected at random a different set for each new painting. This method taps into the elements of subconscious influence and chance, as well as mirrors the cut-up method of writing created by one of my favorite authors William Burroughs.

From these subconscious suggestions I created a lush and layered symbolic world that explores the realm of childhood, memory and longing. Ghosts and gardens, snakes and skulls frame fever-dream scenes of wounded goddesses slayed open, fecund gardens growing from their wounds. Vibrant strange gardens populated with insects and dream imagery portray a psychedelic dance between life and death.

The beinART Surreal Show 2016

Jon Beinart is without a doubt one of the finest curators in the modern art world, and his group shows are always exceptional. If you’re in Los Angeles, don’t miss the 2016 Surreal Show at Corpro Nason Gallery.

I happen to be 3,000 miles away from this gallery, but I’ve been pouring over the online preview (you can see the whole show). Amazing work here!

Haven Gallery: Music Box

Another great show opens at Haven Gallery tonight!

From the show description:
The art of music has spanned centuries and served a number of purposes throughout time. The power of music can be both a unifying force as well as one of individual solace. In other cases, it can also be one of discord or even anguish.

The ability for expression through sound has proven to serve a variety of purposes; inspiration, comfort, pain and bringing people together. In “Music Box”, artists look to a lyric, song title, band name, etc., to influence them for the creation of their artwork.

The intertwining of music with the artist’s medium will be contemplated and embraced. The creative expression of music and how it relates to the artist’s technique, medium, mentality and/or subject on an emotional and physical level will also be considered.

Mark Ryden: Dodecahedron

I hope last night was the final Mark Ryden opening in NY I’ll ever have to miss due to health (a girl can dream!). Dodecahedron is now showing at the Paul Kasmin Gallery.

The show’s press release eloquently describes it:

The vocabulary of images in Ryden’s new body of work remains consistent with his pervasive distortion of scale and his iconic fairytale-like creatures set against seductive landscapes of untouched beauty.

However, the subject of his latest series is informed by the geometric structure “dodecahedron,” a solid figure bearing twelve sides whose perfect symmetry has been the source of extensive query by mathematicians and scientists since antiquity. Drawing upon the form’s mystery and divine connotations as a source of inspiration, Ryden explores the bridge between the physical world and the intangible realm.

Ryden’s labor-intensive canvases skillfully rework centuries of art history, combining the grandeur of Spanish and Italian religious painting with the decorative richness of Old Master compositions and the lush textures of French Neo-Classicism. Expanding on these concepts, the artist’s paintings focus on “the soul confronting its physical form” as represented by his reoccurring feminine child figure, he calls “anima” or “soul” figure.

Haven Gallery: Little Big

When I was growing up, people often spouted the old adage “good things come in small packages” at me. For those of average stature who may not be aware, this is what well-meaning folks say to short kids. I did grow, no pun intended, to appreciate the intent behind the (albeit mildly patronizing) statement.

But in the art world, this adage rings true. Some artists are masters at depicting an impressive amount of detail on impossibly small canvases (who remember’s Mark Ryden’s Blood Show years ago?). Haven Gallery has rounded up a brilliant team of such artists in the Little Big group show, opening tonight.

All pieces in the show are 8″ X 8″ or smaller. I hope some of you can see the exhibition, as pictures don’t do justice to the skill required to create these works.

Haven Gallery: Into the Woods

Currently unable to travel to NYC for art shows due to health, I’m thrilled beyond measure about the recent opening of Haven Gallery, very close my home!

Haven showcases incredible rosters of pop surrealism/contemporary artists. I couldn’t have conjured a venue more aligned with my aesthetic preferences and I’m truly excited to support the place.

The current group show is entitled Into the Woods.

“Into the Woods” is a group show focused on the bi-fold nature of the forest. The mystery, intrigue and surmised dangers of the woods make it an untrodden domain for some. While others find a home and haven in the beauty of the fecund faunascape. This exhibition explores the physical and metaphorical nature of this integral eco-system embracing personal tales, folklore and more.

Some of the pieces in the show evoke an almost visceral sadness or empathy, while others marinate the eyes in an ethereal glowing wonderland.

The owners are lovely people with stellar taste (I’m already drooling over the upcoming show…which I’ll feature as well). If you can get there, pay Haven a visit.
