A deputy leader (in Scottish English, sometimes depute leader) in the Westminster system is the second-in-command of a political party, behind the party leader. Deputy leaders often become deputy prime minister when their parties are elected to government. The deputy leader may take on the role of the leader if the current leader is, for some reason, unable to perform their role as leader. For example the deputy leader often takes the place of the party leader at Question Time sessions in the latter's absence. They also usually have other responsibilities of party management.
Some of these may be out of date.
The deputy leader of far-right group Britain First has been found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment after hurling abuse at a Muslim woman wearing a hijab in front of her four young children. Jayda Fransen, 30, was fined nearly £2,000 at Luton and South Bedfordshire magistrates court for wearing a political uniform and shouting at Sumayyah Sharpe during a “Christian patrol” of Bury Park in Luton on Saturday 23 January. District Judge Carolyn Mellanby said she believed the group had gone to the area looking for trouble – but said Sharpe had been mistaken for an easy target.

The media is in overdrive trying to incriminate Britain First in the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, without even the flimsiest of hard evidence. All the eye witnesses have stated they either did not hear Britain First being shouted, or have said they heard "PUT Britain First". The claim originated with a Labour MP who has now retracted her statement on Twitter. This hasn't stopped the media dragging Britain First into this act of despicable criminality. In this video, deputy leader Jayda Fransen examines the "evidence" for the Britain First claim. 17 June 2016
