War crimes and human rights violations continue to mount as the estimated death toll reaches 500,000 civilians. At this point, Syria is only 300,000 deaths away from becoming another Rwanda -- only this time, it's not propaganda-incited tribal warfare. It's an autocratic government bent on eradicating all traces of dissent from the country through indiscriminate killing. It is now up to us to raise our voices and affirm the global community's intervention. The world needs to break the diplomatic gridlock and achieve relief for those under fire. At this point it's not about political gain or economics. It's about humanity.
While Canada pulled its fighter aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition earlier this year, the Canadian Forces still pull its share on the ground. Providing vital support to Peshmerga fighters through "advise-and-assist" operations, Canada has boots on the ground and is actively taking part in the battle.
The diagnosis of PTSD requires that a person has "...experienced, witnessed or been confronted with an event or events that involve actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others." The traumatic event must provoke intense fear, helplessness, or horror.
India continues to bear the brunt of the TB epidemic, with 2.8 of the 10.4 million new TB cases that occurred in 2015. TB is also a major killer of Indian people. The latest Global Burden of Disease estimates from Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, published earlier this month, show TB to be the sixth leading cause of deaths in India.
Our labour market is not evolving to help companies compete globally. Modernizing our labour market requires two things: a talent pool equipped with the appropriate skill sets, and an up-to-date approach on collecting and sharing labour market data.
Our bodies have a language of their own, and their words aren't always kind. Your body language has likely become an integral part of who you are, to the point where you might not even think about it.
The problem is that it's overwhelming to be always doing more than your fair share in your workplace. Being the "nice" person at work invariably leads to mounting stress, exhaustion, frustration and ultimately burnout, when you can no longer cope with the pressures of having to over-perform.
Toronto has established itself as a hot market for residential condos, but more recently, the office-condo trend has started to make waves through the city, potentially becoming the next big investment opportunity.
Having been a counsellor and crisis interventionist, I have supported people who only began dealing with horrible experiences after a trigger in their environment. And far as emotional triggers around sexual abuse go; this election is a doozy.
It's not an uncommon image in urban India: a toddler -- dusty, tear-stained face, wearing ragged clothing, sitting alone at a construction site.
Parenting has changed since I grew up, and certainly since my parents were growing up. Kids can get away with more and more, and the side-effects of this in the sports world are not good at all. Sports are a great way to teach kids about life at a young age; they are not about creating superstars with a sense of entitlement.
It took undeniable evidence of him bragging about his prowess as a poster boy for rape culture to turn the tide decisively turn against him, and even then, the widespread rejection of his candidacy was as motivated by his free-falling polls and likely loser status. Thoughtful and attentive people of all ages and affiliations now have chilling clarity about the depth of the double standard and breadth of unconscious bias and its impact on women.
The University of Toronto has just established a scholarship for anti-psychiatry. Called the Bonnie Burstow Scholarship in Antipsychiatry, it is being praised by Scientology. As a graduate with two degrees from the U of T, I'm offended, as are many others.
We need access to safe, affordable housing now. The government must act. There is so much trauma and pain I could have avoided if I had only received the support I needed. I experienced homelessness for 1,346 days. I should have never been without a home.
Canadians agree that the conditions Indigenous people face economically and socially are unacceptable and long overdue for change. But to start that process would require Indigenous people to be at the table to represent their concerns themselves. Here, Canada's current voting system is a key barrier.
Online counter-marketing succeeds only if teens tell other teens how ridiculously uncool and unsafe it is to text or speak into a phone while driving. Yet the dominant form of teenage communication is texting. This poses a public policy conundrum: how best do we change teen behaviour?
October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It is to recognize all children, in rich countries as well as in poor, who are left behind because their families lack income and their societies fail to reach them with the services they need. It's time to end child poverty in Canada. It's entirely possible and there are promising steps.
So how did this red-sweatered troll, posing as an undecided voter, get selected to appear on stage at such an event to ask, "the question"? Typical, it turns out. For starters, he made no prior mention of his deep ties to the fossil fuel industry. Just a concerned, undecided voter.
In Canada, a family loses a baby late in pregnancy or within the first year of life approximately every two hours. This number doesn't include early pregnancy loss, which impacts more women.
This past December, I was finally home for the holidays, after missing two years of the holiday season with my family and friends in Toronto. In fact, in the past two years, I have only been home for a total of three times and each of those three times, there's been an emerging trend: "When did my parents get so cool?"
I want them to know there's merit trying. The cross country season has passed us by, but there are still spelling tests, math tests, hockey games, baseball tryouts and track and field. They won't win every game. They won't make every team. But they will try again. I know they can.
Many women suffer vaginal and sexual health problems in silence as they age but few discuss it with their doctors. Despite being a society saturated in sexual images, important, helpful sex information about conditions like vaginal dryness, painful sex and low desire simply are not discussed.
What's next in the federal-provincial "climate wars," you might ask? Since last week's initial ruckus, the combatants have gone quiet. Despite this temporary armistice, something clearly needs to be done to reverse the harm done to federal-provincial relations, while still moving towards an early agreement on carbon.
