6: The Challenger Disaster
January 28th, 1986: space shuttle Challenger breaks apart less than two minutes into the flight, ending all seven of the crew members on board. The disaster was the result of an O-ring failure, which ultimately led pressurized gas from the rocket motor pouring out onto the external fuel tank. This caused the orbiter to break apart. When the Challenger disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, it was not known how quickly the seven crew members passed. It comprised of Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, Ellison Onizuka, and Christa McAuliffe. Photos of the disaster show that the crew cabin did exit the wreckage in tact as it plummeted towards the ocean. Experts agree that if the cabin did not depressurize, it was likely that they were still alive from the time of the breakup until the cabin crashed into the ocean. But the heavy impact with the ocean’s surface would have ended any crew member that was still alive.
5: Soyuz 11
The three-member crew of the Soyuz 11 left our planet on June 30th, 1971 while attempting to re-enter earth’s atmosphere. When their cabin became depressurized, the three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev all could no longer breathe. They hold the distinction of being the only three people whose lives ended in space. Their mission had been to board the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. They did that successfully and stayed for 22 days, performing tasks such as replacing a ventilation system, holding a live TV broadcast, and even had plans to observe a rocket launch...a plan that had to be postponed. On June 30th, everything appeared to be going fine. But after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and a seemingly successful landing in the Soviet Union, officials opened the capsule door to find all three men sitting motionless.
4: The Columbia Disaster
On February 1st, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. As it turns out, a piece of foam had broken off from the external tank during liftoff and hit the wing of the orbiter. When the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere, it caused hot atmospheric gases to destroy the wing, ultimately causing the shuttle to break apart. The crew consisted of Commander Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, Ilan Ramon, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, and David M. Brown. NASA was aware of the displaced piece of foam, but at the time did not think it would hinder the safety of the mission. On four previous flights, foam insulation had fallen off, yet the missions were completed successfully on all four flights. The voyage was described as a “multi-disciplinary microgravity and Earth science research mission.” After accomplishing much of what they set out to do, the crew attempted to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
3: Michael J. Adams
Adams was an astronaut and former air force pilot and was on his seventh flight when it occurred. This particular flight was a test run of the X-15 experimental craft. A few minutes into the flight, Adams began experiencing problems with the aircraft. He radioed to ground control that he had entered a spin. Ground control was unable to rectify the situation and began preparing for an emergency landing. After some skilled maneuvering, Adams managed to recover the aircraft from the spin, but was descending very rapidly. He likely misinterpreted his instrument display and possibly had vertigo due to the spinning. Furthermore, an electrical malfunction early in the flight likely caused Adams to be distracted, which could be another reason why he lost control of the X-15. NASA implemented new procedures to avoid such tragedies in the future. First, they decided to screen astronauts for vertigo.
1: Apollo 1
Apollo 1 was supposed to be the first manned mission of the U.S manned lunar landing program. On January 27th, 1967, NASA was conducting a simulation test for Apollo 1. In order for the scheduled launch on February 21st to occur on time, this simulation needed to be done successfully. During the simulation, the crew cabin caught on fire. The ground crew attempted to rescue the men, but because dense smoke and immense heat poured out of the module, it took the ground staff nearly five minutes to open the module hatches. When they finally got through, they found the crew’s bodies: Gus Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee.

January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel.
CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight.
The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise).
Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65,000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster. Morgan served as McAuliffe's backup during STS-51-L. As Morgan is now part of the Educator in Space Program, she will be credited as the first "educator" in space, to distinguish her from McAuliffe.

The idea of floating away in to the darkness of space, is a terrifying thought, a thought that would definitely cross every astronauts mind while space walking.This kind of situation is normally seen depicted on the big screen, in movies like Gravity.
But what would happen if you really did float off in to space?
Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station for example, they are attached to the space craft at all times with a retractable 26 meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds.But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue).It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station.If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission.But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut.So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you.The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your space suit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out.
However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip in to space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes.
However, If the you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor.Thankfully No body currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being a float away astronaut and even though there has been some close calls in the past, the astronauts safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right.

Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003) was an Indian-American astronaut and the first Indian woman in space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. In 2003, Chawla was one of the seven crew members killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster
Early life
Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal. She moved to the United States in 1982 where she obtained a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Determined to become an astronaut even in the face of the Challenger disaster, Chawla went on to earn a second Masters in 1986 and a PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Career
In 1988, she began working at the NASA Ames Research Center, where she did Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research on Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing concepts. In 1993, she joined Overset Methods, Inc. as Vice President and Research Scientist specializing in simulation of moving multiple body problems. Chawla held a Certificated Flight Instructor rating for airplanes, gliders and Commercial Pilot licenses for single and multi-engine airplanes, seaplanes and gliders. Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in April 1991, Chawla applied for the NASA Astronaut Corps. She joined the Corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996. She spoke the following words while traveling in the weightlessness of space, "You are just your intelligence". She traveled 10.67 million km, as many as 252 times around the Earth.

Space Shuttle Challenger disaster
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter Challenger (OV-099) (mission STS-51-L) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members, which included five NASA astronauts and two Payload Specialists. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 EST (16:39 UTC). Disintegration of the vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The O-ring failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank. Aerodynamic forces broke up the orbiter.
The crew compartment and many other vehicle fragments were eventually recovered from the ocean floor after a lengthy search and recovery operation. The exact timing of the death of the crew is unknown; several crew members are known to have survived the initial breakup of the spacecraft. The shuttle had no escape system, and the impact of the crew compartment with the ocean surface was too violent to be survivable.

On four previous flights, foam insulation had fallen off, yet the missions were completed successfully on all four flights. The voyage was described as a “multi-disciplinary microgravity and Earth science research mission.” After accomplishing much of what they set out to do, the crew attempted to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 3: Michael J. Adams Adams was an astronaut and former air force pilot and was on his seventh flight when it occurred. This particular flight was a test run of the X-15 experimental craft. A few minutes into the flight, Adams began experiencing problems with the aircraft. He radioed to ground control that he had entered a spin. Ground control was unable to rectify the situation and began preparing for an emergency landing. After some skilled maneuvering, Adams managed to recover the aircraft from the spin, but was descending very rapidly. He likely misinterpreted his instrument display and possibly had vertigo due to the spinning. Furthermore, an electrical malfunction early in the flight likely caused Adams to be distracted, which could be another reason why he lost control of the X-15. NASA implemented new procedures to avoid such tragedies in the future. First, they decided to screen astronauts for vertigo. 1: Apollo 1 Apollo 1 was supposed to be the first manned mission of the U.S manned lunar landing program. On January 27th, 1967, NASA was conducting a simulation test for Apollo 1. In order for the scheduled launch on February 21st to occur on time, this simulation needed to be done successfully. During the simulation, the crew cabin caught on fire. The ground crew attempted to rescue the men, but because dense smoke and immense heat poured out of the module, it took the ground staff nearly five minutes to open the module hatches. When they finally got through, they found the crew’s bodies: Gus Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee. -

January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel. CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight. The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise). Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65,000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster. Morgan served as McAuliffe's backup during STS-51-L. As Morgan is now part of the Educator in Space Program, she will be credited as the first "educator" in space, to distinguish her from McAuliffe. But what would happen if you really did float off in to space? Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station for example, they are attached to the space craft at all times with a retractable 26 meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds.But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue).It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station.If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission.But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut.So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you.The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your space suit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out. However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip in to space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes. However, If the you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor.Thankfully No body currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being a float away astronaut and even though there has been some close calls in the past, the astronauts safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right. -

6: The Challenger Disaster
January 28th, 1986: space shuttle Challenger breaks apart less than two minutes into the flight, ending all seven of the crew members on board. The disaster was the result of an O-ring failure, which ultimately led pressurized gas from the rocket motor pouring out onto the external fuel tank. This caused the orbiter to break apart. When the Challenger disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, it was not known how quickly the seven crew members passed. It comprised of Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, Ellison Onizuka, and Christa McAuliffe. Photos of the disaster show that the crew cabin did exit the wreckage in tact as it plummeted towards the ocean. Experts agree that if the cabin did not depressurize, it was likely that they were still alive from the time of the breakup until the cabin crashed into the ocean. But the heavy impact with the ocean’s surface would have ended any crew member that was still alive.
5: Soyuz 11
The three-member crew of the Soyuz 11 left our planet on June 30th, 1971 while attempting to re-enter earth’s atmosphere. When their cabin became depressurized, the three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev all could no longer breathe. They hold the distinction of being the only three people whose lives ended in space. Their mission had been to board the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. They did that successfully and stayed for 22 days, performing tasks such as replacing a ventilation system, holding a live TV broadcast, and even had plans to observe a rocket launch...a plan that had to be postponed. On June 30th, everything appeared to be going fine. But after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and a seemingly successful landing in the Soviet Union, officials opened the capsule door to find all three men sitting motionless.
4: The Columbia Disaster
On February 1st, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. As it turns out, a piece of foam had broken off from the external tank during liftoff and hit the wing of the orbiter. When the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere, it caused hot atmospheric gases to destroy the wing, ultimately causing the shuttle to break apart. The crew consisted of Commander Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, Ilan Ramon, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, and David M. Brown. NASA was aware of the displaced piece of foam, but at the time did not think it would hinder the safety of the mission. Adams was an astronaut and former air force pilot and was on his seventh flight when it occurred. This particular flight was a test run of the X-15 experimental craft. A few minutes into the flight, Adams began experiencing problems with the aircraft. He radioed to ground control that he had entered a spin. Ground control was unable to rectify the situation and began preparing for an emergency landing. After some skilled maneuvering, Adams managed to recover the aircraft from the spin, but was descending very rapidly. He likely misinterpreted his instrument display and possibly had vertigo due to the spinning. Furthermore, an electrical malfunction early in the flight likely caused Adams to be distracted, which could be another reason why he lost control of the X-15. NASA implemented new procedures to avoid such tragedies in the future. First, they decided to screen astronauts for vertigo.
1: Apollo 1
Apollo 1 was supposed to be the first manned mission of the U.S manned lunar landing program. On January 27th, 1967, NASA was conducting a simulation test for Apollo 1. In order for the scheduled launch on February 21st to occur on time, this simulation needed to be done successfully. During the simulation, the crew cabin caught on fire. The ground crew attempted to rescue the men, but because dense smoke and immense heat poured out of the module, it took the ground staff nearly five minutes to open the module hatches. When they finally got through, they found the crew’s bodies: Gus Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee.

6: The Challenger Disaster
January 28th, 1986: space shuttle Challenger breaks apart less than two minutes into the flight, ending all seven of the crew members on board. The disaster was the result of an O-ring failure, which ultimately led pressurized gas from the rocket motor pouring out onto the external fuel tank. This caused the orbiter to break apart. When the Challenger disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, it was not known how quickly the seven crew members passed. It comprised of Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, Ellison Onizuka, and Christa McAuliffe. Photos of the disaster show that the crew cabin did exit the wreckage in tact as it plummeted towards the ocean. Experts agree that if the cabin did not depressurize, it was likely that they were still alive from the time of the breakup until the cabin crashed into the ocean. But the heavy impact with the ocean’s surface would have ended any crew member that was still alive.
5: Soyuz 11
The three-member crew of the Soyuz 11 left our planet on June 30th, 1971 while attempting to re-enter earth’s atmosphere. When their cabin became depressurized, the three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev all could no longer breathe. They hold the distinction of being the only three people whose lives ended in space. Their mission had been to board the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. They did that successfully and stayed for 22 days, performing tasks such as replacing a ventilation system, holding a live TV broadcast, and even had plans to observe a rocket launch...a plan that had to be postponed. On June 30th, everything appeared to be going fine. But after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and a seemingly successful landing in the Soviet Union, officials opened the capsule door to find all three men sitting motionless.
4: The Columbia Disaster
On February 1st, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. As it turns out, a piece of foam had broken off from the external tank during liftoff and hit the wing of the orbiter. When the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere, it caused hot atmospheric gases to destroy the wing, ultimately causing the shuttle to break apart. The crew consisted of Commander Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, Ilan Ramon, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, and David M. Brown. NASA was aware of the displaced piece of foam, but at the time did not think it would hinder the safety of the mission. On four previous flights, foam insulation had fallen off, yet the missions were completed successfully on all four flights. The voyage was described as a “multi-disciplinary microgravity and Earth science research mission.” After accomplishing much of what they set out to do, the crew attempted to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight.
The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise).
Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65,000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster. Morgan served as McAuliffe's backup during STS-51-L. As Morgan is now part of the Educator in Space Program, she will be credited as the first "educator" in space, to distinguish her from McAuliffe.

The idea of floating away in to the darkness of space, is a terrifying thought, a thought that would definitely cross every astronauts mind while space walking.This kind of situation is normally seen depicted on the big screen, in movies like Gravity.
But what would happen if you really did float off in to space?
Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station for example, they are attached to the space craft at all times with a retractable 26 meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds.But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue).It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station.If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission.But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut.So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you.The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your space suit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out.
However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip in to space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes.
However, If the you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor.Thankfully No body currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being a float away astronaut and even though there has been some close calls in the past, the astronauts safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right.

January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel. CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. 6: The Challenger Disaster
January 28th, 1986: space shuttle Challenger breaks apart less than two minutes into the flight, ending all seven of the crew members on board. The disaster was the result of an O-ring failure, which ultimately led pressurized gas from the rocket motor pouring out onto the external fuel tank. This caused the orbiter to break apart. When the Challenger disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, it was not known how quickly the seven crew members passed. It comprised of Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, Ellison Onizuka, and Christa McAuliffe. Photos of the disaster show that the crew cabin did exit the wreckage in tact as it plummeted towards the ocean. Experts agree that if the cabin did not depressurize, it was likely that they were still alive from the time of the breakup until the cabin crashed into the ocean. But the heavy impact with the ocean’s surface would have ended any crew member that was still alive.
5: Soyuz 11
The three-member crew of the Soyuz 11 left our planet on June 30th, 1971 while attempting to re-enter earth’s atmosphere. When their cabin became depressurized, the three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev all could no longer breathe. They hold the distinction of being the only three people whose lives ended in space. Their mission had been to board the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. They did that successfully and stayed for 22 days, performing tasks such as replacing a ventilation system, holding a live TV broadcast, and even had plans to observe a rocket launch...a plan that had to be postponed. On June 30th, everything appeared to be going fine. But after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and a seemingly successful landing in the Soviet Union, officials opened the capsule door to find all three men sitting motionless.
4: The Columbia Disaster
On February 1st, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. As it turns out, a piece of foam had broken off from the external tank during liftoff and hit the wing of the orbiter. When the shuttle re-entered the atmosphere, it caused hot atmospheric gases to destroy the wing, ultimately causing the shuttle to break apart. The crew consisted of Commander Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, Ilan Ramon, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, and David M. Brown. NASA was aware of the displaced piece of foam, but at the time did not think it would hinder the safety of the mission. On four previous flights, foam insulation had fallen off, yet the missions were completed successfully on all four flights. The voyage was described as a “multi-disciplinary microgravity and Earth science research mission.” After accomplishing much of what they set out to do, the crew attempted to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
3: Michael J. Adams
Adams was an astronaut and former air force pilot and was on his seventh flight when it occurred. This particular flight was a test run of the X-15 experimental craft. A few minutes into the flight, Adams began experiencing problems with the aircraft. He radioed to ground control that he had entered a spin. Ground control was unable to rectify the situation and began preparing for an emergency landing. After some skilled maneuvering, Adams managed to recover the aircraft from the spin, but was descending very rapidly. He likely misinterpreted his instrument display and possibly had vertigo due to the spinning. Furthermore, an electrical malfunction early in the flight likely caused Adams to be distracted, which could be another reason why he lost control of the X-15. NASA implemented new procedures to avoid such tragedies in the future. First, they decided to screen astronauts for vertigo.
1: Apollo 1
Apollo 1 was supposed to be the first manned mission of the U.S manned lunar landing program. On January 27th, 1967, NASA was conducting a simulation test for Apollo 1. In order for the scheduled launch on February 21st to occur on time, this simulation needed to be done successfully. During the simulation, the crew cabin caught on fire. The ground crew attempted to rescue the men, but because dense smoke and immense heat poured out of the module, it took the ground staff nearly five minutes to open the module hatches. When they finally got through, they found the crew’s bodies: Gus Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee.

January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel.
CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight.
The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise).
Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65,000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster. Morgan served as McAuliffe's backup during STS-51-L. As Morgan is now part of the Educator in Space Program, she will be credited as the first "educator" in space, to distinguish her from McAuliffe.

The idea of floating away in to the darkness of space, is a terrifying thought, a thought that would definitely cross every astronauts mind while space walking.This kind of situation is normally seen depicted on the big screen, in movies like Gravity.
But what would happen if you really did float off in to space?
Well Space agency's like NASA do have safety protocols to prevent float away astronaut situations from happening. When an astronaut steps outside of the international space station for example, they are attached to the space craft at all times with a retractable 26 meter braided steel tether, which has a tensile strength of 1,100 pounds.But If this strong tether was to fail, the astronauts can then engage the "SAFER". (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue).It is a small, emergency jet pack system, worn during a spacewalk and provides free-flying mobility to return to the space station.If however the "Safer" failed or the astronaut wearing it was unconscious and could not operate the jet pack, then the only hope would be that the other members of the space station could start a rescue mission.But this rescue effort would be tricky, as there is currently no spacecraft that could be used to retrieve the float away astronaut.So if the tether snapped, the jet pack malfunctioned and your astronaut space buddies failed to rescue you, then you would float off in the direction according to whatever forces were acting on you when you broke loose. You would be completely weightless, potentially spinning and no amount of kicking or doggy paddling would save you.The Earths gravity would trap you in an orbit around the planet and if your space suit was still sealed, you would have to experience this terrifying fate for up to 8 hours, as you wait for your oxygen supplies to run out.
However If your suit had become damaged during the incident that caused you to float away, your trip in to space would be massively cut short. Exposure to outer space would cause you to become unconscious within 15 seconds, Your blood and other fluids would boil and then freeze because there is no air pressure. Your boiling fluids would cause your body would swell up, perhaps to twice the normal size and all this would happen within a few minutes.
However, If the you floated away from your station at the right angle and velocity then you might even be set for a collision course with Earth, but you wouldn't make it anywhere near the surface because the Earth's atmosphere would cause you to burn up on entry, just like a falling meteor.Thankfully No body currently has ever had to experience this terrifying fate of being a float away astronaut and even though there has been some close calls in the past, the astronauts safety equipment has prevented a situation like this from happening. Agency's like NASA are confident that a float away astronaut will not happen and I for one, hope they are right.

In diesem Video zeige ich Ausschnitte aus Mass Effect Andromeda. Die Aufnahmen, welche hier zu sehen sind, stammen aus dem Bildschirm der Erkundung der Sonnensysteme mit der Tempest. Ich zeige hier keinen walkthrough oder ein let´s play. Ich habe das entsprechende Menü im Spiel gegen den Strich benutzt und mit den verfügbaren Kameraeinstellungen des Erkundungsbildschirms gearbeitet. Dabei lassen sich die erkundeten Himmelskörper sowie alle weiteren erkundeten Objekte mit dem linken und rechten Stick des Controllers animieren. Ich freue mich darüber, dass die Programmierer des Spiels diese Möglichkeit implementiert haben. Man bekommt keine Punkte dafür, man levelt nicht auf, es sieht aber wunderschön aus und repräsentiert den kosmischen Hinterrund des Spiels auf eine sehr ästhetische Weise....

This is my VHS-Rip of Earth Star Voyager a science fiction television movie from 1988. The movieplot : a space mission to find another planet suitable for colonization. Duncan Regehr and Brian McNamara star. Directed by James Goldstone, who steered the pilot episode for the Star Trek TV series. In the year 2082, the Earth deep-space exploration vessel, Vanguard Explorer, has suffered heavy damage, due to the efforts of Captain Jacob 'Jake' Brown trying to keep his ship out of the hands of mutineers led by his second-in-command, Vance Arthur. Feigning compliance, Jake attacks Vance and knocks him senseless long enough for him to get to an escape pod and launch into space. However, the cause of the damage on board the Vanguard Explorer is unknown.

The five orbiters - Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour - have flown more than 130 times, carrying over 350 people into space and travelling more than half a billion miles, more than enough to reach Jupiter. Designed to return to Earth and land like a giant glider, the shuttle was the world's first reusable space vehicle. More than all of that, though, the shuttle program expanded the limits of human achievement and broadened our understanding of our world.
It all started with STS-1, launched on April 12, 1981, just twenty years to the day after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. When astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen launched that morning in Columbia, it was the first time in history a new spacecraft was launched on its maiden voyage with a crew aboard.
For an entire generation, the space shuttle was NASA. We've watched a parade of firsts - Sally Ride, Guy Bluford, Kathy Sullivan, John Glenn and others. We've seen astronauts float free, and launch and repair spacecraft like Hubble which have fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe.

In diesem Video zeige ich Ausschnitte aus Mass Effect Andromeda. Die Aufnahmen, welche hier zu sehen sind, stammen aus dem Bildschirm der Erkundung der Sonnensysteme mit der Tempest. Ich zeige hier keinen walkthrough oder ein let´s play. Ich habe das entsprechende Menü im Spiel gegen den Strich benutzt und mit den verfügbaren Kameraeinstellungen des Erkundungsbildschirms gearbeitet. Dabei lassen sich die erkundeten Himmelskörper sowie alle weiteren erkundeten Objekte mit dem linken und rechten Stick des Controllers animieren. Ich freue mich darüber, dass die Programmierer des Spiels diese Möglichkeit implementiert haben. Man bekommt keine Punkte dafür, man levelt nicht auf, es sieht aber wunderschön aus und repräsentiert den kosmischen Hinterrund des Spiels auf eine sehr ästhetische Weise.
Dies ist mein bisher längstes Video auf meinem Kanal. Natürlich besteht auch in diesem Video die Musik komplett aus eigener Produktion. Ich habe drei neue Musikstücke für dieses Video produziert und die greatest hits meiner bisherigen Eigenproduktionen mit einbezogen.

ASTRONAUT:
Accessing disconnect. Enable on. Copy that E.L. Com. All systems are go for entry, decent, and landing. Stand by. Stand by.
ASTRONAUT:
We are looking fine, flight. Data is good.
NARRATOR:
At the dawn of the 21st Century, space agencies in Europe and
America began making plans to land the first humans on Mars.
But manned missions to the red planet have been proposed before.
For some, Mars holds the answers to mankind’s future in space.
Others say Mars is too far, too dangerous and too expensive for
humans to explore.
And in a world torn by troubles, some say there is no need or will
for mankind to reach into space anymore.
More than 30 years after the last Apollo astronaut walked on the
moon, the American-manned space program seems to have lost its
way, unable to reach beyond even low-earth orbit.
DR. ROBERT ZUBRIN:
We’ve got a problem, NASA has been literally going around in
circles with the space program for the past 30 years.
NARRATOR:
Astronautically engineer, Dr. Robert Zubrin, has been arguing for
years that sending humans to Mars is the mission the space
program needs.
ZUBRIN:
It’s time that we set goals for NASA that were worthy of the risks
of the human space flight. Mars is the next logical step in our space
program image. It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face
for the past 30 years. It’s the planet that’s most like the earth, it’s
the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and
therefore some day technological civilization. It’s the planet that
will provide us with the answer as to whether life is prevalent in
the universe or exclusive to the earth.
And it’s the planet that will give us the critical tests as to whether
humanity, can breakout out of the planet of our birth and become a
space-faring species.
NARRATOR:
In the early 1990s, Zubrin was the head of the Mars Direct
program at Martin Marietta Astronautics. His team developed a
mission to Mars that could be done at the fraction of Nasa’s
projected costs.
Using only existing technology Zubrin argues that the first steps on
Martian soil could be made within 10 years.
ZUBRIN:
There is absolutely nothing in this that is beyond our technology.
DR. EDWARD WEILER:
We are not ready to send humans to Mars right now. We don’t
know how to keep them alive. There are people out there who say
we can go to Mars tomorrow. One of my requirements, one of
NASA’s requirements is that if we send humans to Mars we bring
them back alive.
NARRATOR:
For the past 15-years Zubrin and his colleagues have waged a
campaign to convince society and the political class that humans
on Mars should be the goal for NASA now.
This is the story of our cold neighboring planet and the debate over
whether man’s fate it tied to the red world. It’s the story of an

ASTRONAUT:
We are looking fine, flight. Data is good.
NARRATOR:
At the dawn of the 21st Century, space agencies in Europe and
America began making plans to land the first humans on Mars.
But manned missions to the red planet have been proposed before.
For some, Mars holds the answers to mankind’s future in space.
Others say Mars is too far, too dangerous and too expensive for
humans to explore.
And in a world torn by troubles, some say there is no need or will
for mankind to reach into space anymore.
More than 30 years after the last Apollo astronaut walked on the
moon, the American-manned space program seems to have lost its
way, unable to reach beyond even low-earth orbit.
DR. ROBERT ZUBRIN:
We’ve got a problem, NASA has been literally going around in
circles with the space program for the past 30 years.
NARRATOR:
Astronautically engineer, Dr. Robert Zubrin, has been arguing for
years that sending humans to Mars is the mission the space
program needs.
ZUBRIN:
It’s time that we set goals for NASA that were worthy of the risks
of the human space flight. Mars is the next logical step in our space
program image. It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face
for the past 30 years. It’s the planet that’s most like the earth, it’s
the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and
therefore some day technological civilization. It’s the planet that
will provide us with the answer as to whether life is prevalent in
the universe or exclusive to the earth.
And it’s the planet that will give us the critical tests as to whether
humanity, can breakout out of the planet of our birth and become a
space-faring species.
NARRATOR:
In the early 1990s, Zubrin was the head of the Mars Direct
program at Martin Marietta Astronautics. His team developed a
mission to Mars that could be done at the fraction of Nasa’s
projected costs.
Using only existing technology Zubrin argues that the first steps on
Martian soil could be made within 10 years.
ZUBRIN:
There is absolutely nothing in this that is beyond our technology.
DR. EDWARD WEILER:
We are not ready to send humans to Mars right now. We don’t
know how to keep them alive. There are people out there who say
we can go to Mars tomorrow. One of my requirements, one of
NASA’s requirements is that if we send humans to Mars we bring
them back alive.
NARRATOR:
For the past 15-years Zubrin and his colleagues have waged a
campaign to convince society and the political class that humans
on Mars should be the goal for NASA now.
This is the story of our cold neighboring planet and the debate over
whether man’s fate it tied to the red world. It’s the story of an
engineer’s journey - and the battle of ideas over which direction in
space will truly benefit mankind.
ZUBRIN:
We’re at a crossroads today. We either muster the courage to go or

In the year 2082, the Earth deep-space exploration vessel, Vanguard Explorer, has suffered heavy damage, due to the efforts of Captain Jacob 'Jake' Brown trying to keep his ship out of the hands of mutineers led by his second-in-command, Vance Arthur. Feigning compliance, Jake attacks Vance and knocks him senseless long enough for him to get to an escape pod and launch into space. However, the cause of the damage on board the Vanguard Explorer is unknown.
