TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's swimming and diving program earned a dual meet win over Georgetown University, 171-126 in its home opener on Saturday.
The Tigers opened the meet, held at Burdick Pool, with morning diving before competing in swimming events in the afternoon. Towson won 12 of the 16 events and posted 24 top three finishes against the Hoyas.
How it Happened
- Jake Casey was the Tigers' lone diver, competing on the one- and three-meter boards. He finished fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 168.30. On the three-meter boards, he also placed fourth with a career-high score of 177.82.
- Towson opened the swimming portion of the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. Zach Bishop, Ryan O'Leary, Jack Saunderson and Nick Essing combined for a time of 3:25.57. The Towson 'B' (Owen Robinson, Stefan Keller, Noah Pritchard, Hunter Wright) relay placed third, timing 3:31.31.
- The Tigers swept the 1000-yard freestyle, led by Will Dougherty in a personal-best 9:35.32. Andrew Snyder followed in 10:03.84 and Tommy Whitman placed third (10:09.65).
- Wright was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.12.
- In the 100-yard backstroke, Saunderson won in 51.98, smashing his previous best of 55.02. Robinson took third with a personal-best 53.68.
- O'Leary won the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal-best time of 58.28. S. Keller came in third-place, timing 1:00.07.
- Towson recorded the top two finishes in the 200-yard butterfly. Pritchard won the event in 1:53.99 and Matt Sieffert followed in 1:57.23.
- N. Essing timed 21.72 in the 50-yard freestyle for an event victory. He also won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.15. His brother, Matt Essing, placed third with a time of 48.98 in that event.
- The Tigers had swimmers finished second through fifth in the 200-yard backstroke. Zach Bishop was the runner-up (1:55.93) followed by Pritchard (1:57.09).
- S. Keller won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.07 and O'Leary followed in second-place with a personal-best time of 2:09.09.
- Towson swept the 500-yard freestyle, led by Dougherty who timed 4:39.27. He was followed by Evan Brophy in second-place (4:46.49) and Aaron Magazine in third-place (4:47.43).
- Saunderson won the 100-yard butterfly with a personal-best time of 48.29. He was over three seconds faster than Georgetown's second-place finisher.
- S. Keller won the final individual event of the day, the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:07.56.
- Towson's 200-yard freestyle relay rounded out the meet with a win. Saunderson, Bishop, N. Essing, Wright combined for a time of 1:27.30.
Behind the Numbers
- Towson had swimmers record 12 personal bests during the meet.
- The Tigers won 12 of the 16 events and posted 24 top three finishes against the Hoyas.
- The meet was the 22nd meeting between the Tiger men and Hoyas. Towson has now won 15 of those dual meet matchups.
