Arctic ancestral survivalism: on extreme weather Sami wisdom
The Sami people are one of the oldest semi-nomadic indigenous groups in the world. Traditionally herding reindeer in the Arctic regions of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula (the region is known as Sapmi), they learned to work with the rhythms of nature in order to survive the harsh climate.
“Nature is everything for us because we think we belong to Mother Earth,” explains Sami writer/artist/teacher Gunnel Heligfjell, “It is not as with Western European thinking that the earth belongs to us, to the human beings. We think that we belong to the earth like the animals and the plants and everything.”
Following the reindeer migrations, they built transportable homes called lavvu from wood and fabric (similar to Native American tipis, but less vertical to sustain high winds)...

Off Grid Log Cabin with Moss Roof - Cruck Frame Shelter (Overnight Camp)
I head to a bushcraft log cabin in the forest which was built as a cruck frame shelter. I do an overnight camp and explore the forest with Ben and Lewis from BandL bushcraft. We start work on the cruck frame shelter as soon as we arrive in the forest. They started building the off grid rustic log cabin just over a year ago and it’s come along way. As their bushcraft and shelter building skills have developed, so has the cabin. During the afternoon I set up the polish canvas lavvu and the boys set up their shelters. As evening draws we get a camp fire going and cook lunch. When it gets dark we move the camp fire into the tiny Log Cabin that ben and lewis had built and we cook up more food over the fire! The next day we awake to fresh late autumn weather. We then scavenge for hazel saplings...

Bushcraft trip - making carving bench - permanent a-frame camp series [part 3 - long version]
I am enjoying an overnight in my permanent bushcraft camp here in Denmark. Making some great meat and a carving bench, improving the fire place and a few other things - and just enjoying the camp site. I get snow fall on day one.
Here is all videos from the camp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkzP2B7xXbQ&list;=PLwMRed9dogc7VivZKCnQMnGetwW6mBiip

Following the reindeer migrations, they built transportable homes called lavvu from wood and fabric (similar to Native American tipis, but less vertical to sustain high winds). They also have more permanent homes called goahti made from fabric, peat moss or timber, and curved poles.
The reindeer are used for food and materials: clothing, shoes, tents, tools, toys, and handicraft. They even play a role in one of the Sami creation myths.
Gunnel Heligfjell is an artist/writer who teaches the Sami language to schoolchildren (recognized as an official Swedish minority language in 2000). While she lives in a more conventional home in Vilhelmina, Sweden most of the year, she still spends time in a goahti or lavvu during summer or hunting trips. She believes in this traditional self-reliance and knows how to build traditional shelters and still cures reindeer meat (from her husband’s herd) and makes shoes, bags, and fabrics from the skins.

This gives it all a stronger foundation. In the later stages of the day we use birch logs to create the rafters for the roof, which Ben and Lewis will eventually put a moss roof on to make it a living roof. On the inside of the off grid cabin Ben and Lewis have decided to make raised beds using some large logs and flat pieces of wood, this will be an ongoing building project. Follow them on instagram to keep up to date with their build! Thanks for joining me on this 2 day adventure
