Prep soccer: Teams jockey for playoff position

Some teams have clinched. Others are close. The rest are scrambling for position. With the playoff fields in all six brackets being revealed in six days, here’s how metro-area soccer districts stand headed into the final week of the regular season:

BOYS: Volcano Vista (12-3-1 overall) clinched the District 1-6A title on Saturday, beating Cibola 4-1. Everybody else in the district has at least three losses, and the Hawks (6-0 in district) can’t finish any worse than 6-2 in league play.

La Cueva on Saturday drew 1-1 with second-place Sandia, and that probably was enough to assure the District 2-6A championship goes to the Bears, who are 7-0-1 with two games remaining. Sandia is 5-2-1.

From District 4-6A, Albuquerque High is leading at 7-1, with Atrisco Heritage and Valley both a game behind. The Jaguars play host to the Bulldogs on Friday, with AHS already having won the first meeting in overtime.

• St. Pius had a huge week in District 5-5A, going 3-0, including a crucial 2-0 victory on Thursday over previous league leader Los Lunas. The Sartans are 6-1 in district, the Tigers 5-1. Los Lunas has two district games remaining, St. Pius just one.

Albuquerque Academy has not yet fully clinched District 2-5A, after losing 1-0 at home on Saturday to Los Alamos. But all the Chargers have to do is defeat Del Norte on Thursday to do so. Academy also has a fun nondistrict matchup Saturday with rival St. Pius.

Bosque School clinched the District 5-1A/4A crown Thursday after downing Sandia Prep 1-0. But the Bobcats, interestingly enough, don’t have another game for a while. They don’t play this week and, if they get a first-round playoff bye, Bosque will go 21 days between matches.

From District 4-1A/4A, Hope Christian’s 3-1 decision over Portales on Friday, combined with Portales’ loss to Saturday, makes the Huskies that league’s regular-season champion.

GIRLS: District 1-6A is far from a done deal, unlike so many of the boys’ districts and even most of the girls’ districts.

Cibola, with its 3-2 win Saturday over Volcano Vista, is 5-1-1 in league play. The Cougars win the regular season if they defeat Rio Rancho on Thursday.

But the Rams (3-1-2) can also win the district, with victories Thursday and also Saturday night against Piedra Vista.

La Cueva’s overtime win against Sandia on Saturday takes the Matadors out of the District 2-6A championship picture, leaving the Bears (7-0-1) and Eldorado (5-1-2) in the hunt. La Cueva and the Eagles meet on Tuesday night, but Eldorado, even with a win, would still need help from the Bears in the form of a La Cueva loss on Saturday in Clovis.

Albuquerque High locked up the District 4-6A crown on Friday, routing West Mesa 10-0. The Bulldogs are 8-0 in the district. Rio Grande (5-2-1) is in second place following a 4-1 decision over Valley on Saturday.

In Class 5A, Academy (District 2) and St. Pius (District 5) have already secured regular-season titles. The rivals meet in the season finale Saturday on the West Side.

Hope Christian (District 4) and Sandia Prep (District 5) have won their Class 1A/4A districts.

The New Mexico Activities Association  will announce the playoff brackets on Sunday.
