Chilka Lake - Asia's largest brackish water lagoon with water spread ranging from 1165 sq km m the rainy season to 906 sq km in the dry season is nestled in the heart of the coastal Odisha (Orissa). It extends from Bhusandpur in Puri district in the North to Rambha-Malud in Ganjan district in the South, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60 km long narrow strip of marshy islands and sand-flats.
Some of the prominent islands like Nalabana, Kalijal, Somolo, Honeymoon, Break-fast, Birds and Rajahansa inhabited by small subsistence fishermen families, are popular destinations for daily boat trips. Because of its rich bio-diversity and socio-economic importance, Chilika was designated as a Ramsar site in 1981 to afford better protection.
Chilika is recognized as one of the most important wetlands in the world because it is home to a phenomenal variety of birds. Chilika Lake offers visitors a spectacular display of its colorful avian charms in a thousand different hues presented by over 160 species in the peak season between November and February. The lake and its reed islands teem with nesting birds-white bellied sea eagles, ospreys, golden plovers, sand pipers, flamingos, pelicans, shovellers, gulls, include migratory ones flying great distances from Iran, Central Asia and Siberia.
Chilka is situated in the east cost of India, covering the part of Puri, Khurda and Gunjam district of Orissa. It is the largest Brackish water lagoon of India covering an area over 1,000 square feet. The lagoon is very sallow with the depth of 0.32 to 6.2 m. Chilka receives water from 52 rivers and from Bay of Bengal. Around 20,000 people stay here in 132 villages. About 1 million birds of 225 species used to come at Chilka in the winter season, making it a very attractive tourist spot. The video was taken during the boat riding in the lagoon. Due to the hot climate of summer, birds were not seen in a well fashioned.

Chilka Lake is a brackish water lagoon on the east coast of India. You can hire boats to watch endangered 'Irrawaddy Dolphins' and travel across the lake.
Your trip will be interrupted by these "Pearl" salesmen. They will break open shells and pull out pearls.
Before I started recording this video, the fisherman had already checked out and discarded a few empty shells.
I'm told that these "Pearls" are fake. I've also found that what is being sold for around Rs. 100/- by these travelling salesmen is available at Puri beach for Rs. 20/- or less!!
Loved the experience and hence uploading the video.

The Chilka Lake is India's largest coastal lagoon and the second largest lagoon in the world, stretching out across the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of southern coastal Orissa, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. The lake is a paradise for migratory birds in winter and Irrawaddy dolphins.
The Howrah Visakhapatnam main line travels right by the lagoon for a good 7 to 8 km, between the stations of Khallikot (featured in this video) and Rambha (south of Khallikot), giving the impression to the traveler that he/she is journeying right by the sea. The Eastern Ghats, straining their necks right next to the waters add to the breathtaking beauty of the area. The railway tracks themselves encounter a number of sharp curves in this stretch as they curl around the natural topography of the Chilka Lake. Thankfully, the sharp curves are no hindrance to fast travel, combining two major thrills of railfanning: the attainment of high speeds and some spectacularly scenic landscapes through which the train bursts forth!

Chilika Lake
Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, covering an area of over 1,100 km2. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the world.
It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals.
The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources. It sustains more than 150,000 fisher–folk living in 132 villages on the shore and islands.
The lagoon hosts over 160 species of birds in the peak migratory season. Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas come here. These birds travel great distances; migratory birds probably follow much longer routes than the straight lines, possibly up to 12,000 km, to reach Chilika Lake.

Chilka is situated in the east cost of India, covering the part of Puri, Khurda and Gunjam district of Orissa. It is the largest Brackish water lagoon of India covering an area over 1,000 square feet. The lagoon is very sallow with the depth of 0.32 to 6.2 m. Chilka receives water from 52 rivers and from Bay of Bengal. Around 20,000 people stay here in 132 villages. About 1 million birds of 225 species used to come at Chilka in the winter season, making it a very attractive tourist spot. The video was taken during the boat riding in the lagoon. Due to the hot climate of summer, birds were not seen in a well fashioned.

Before I started recording this video, the fisherman had already checked out and discarded a few empty shells.
I'm told that these "Pearls" are fake. I've also found that what is being sold for around Rs. 100/- by these travelling salesmen is available at Puri beach for Rs. 20/- or less!!

The Santragachhi WAP4 unleashes all 5000 horses at her disposal as she lights up a gloomy January evening and thunders past the Chilka Lake, the Eastern Ghats and Khallikot (Orissa) at the Maximum Permissible Speed of 110 kmph.
The Chilka Lake is India's largest coastal lagoon and the second largest lagoon in the world, stretching out across the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of southern coastal Orissa, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. The lake is a paradise for migratory birds in winter and Irrawaddy dolphins.
The Howrah Visakhapatnam main line travels right by the lagoon for a good 7 to 8 km, between the stations of Khallikot (featured in this video) and Rambha (south of Khallikot), giving the impression to the traveler that he/she is journeying right by the sea. The Eastern Ghats, straining their necks right next to the waters add to the breathtaking beauty of the area. The railway tracks themselves encounter a number of sharp curves in this stretch as they curl around the natural topography of the Chilka Lake. Thankfully, the sharp curves are no hindrance to fast travel, combining two major thrills of railfanning: the attainment of high speeds and some spectacularly scenic landscapes through which the train bursts forth!

Visiting Chadhei Guha Island in Chilka Lake
You saw the journey to kalijain in first part and the Kalijai temple in second part. This is the third part of the movie which shows our visit to Chadhiguha island. It is a small island inside Chilika Lake about 10 kms from Kalijaai. This is called Chadei (bird) guha (nest) because lot of birds were taking shelter in this island. The island is made of only huge stones. There are many stories about his island. The rest you can see in the video.

Boating from Balugaon to Kalijai Island in Chilka Lake
Kalijai is one of the famous goddess temples inside Chilika lake. You have to take a boat either from Balugaon or from Rambha. We reserved a motor boat from Balugaon. The journey took about two hours to reach Kalijai Island. It was very thrilling as there was water and only water all around us. It was my first visit to Kalijai. I had a fear in my childhood as every year many people were drowning in the lake. But now-a-days the boats are better and safe. This is the first part of the video which show the starting of our journey from Balugaon and chilika view till we reached Kalijai.

Chilka Lake (Chilika Lake) (ଚିଲିକା ହ୍ରଦ) is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, covering an area of over 1,100 km2. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the world. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. Chilka Lake - Asia's largest brackish water lagoon with water spread ranging from 1165 sq km m the rainy season to 906 sq km in the dry season is nestled in the heart of the coastal Orissa. It extends from Bhusandpur in Puri district in the North to Rambha-Malud in Ganjan district in the South, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60 km long narrow strip of marshy islands and sand-flats.
Some of the prominent islands like Nalabana, Kalijal, Somolo, Honeymoon, Break-fast, Birds and Rajahansa inhabited by small subsistence fishermen families, are popular destinations for daily boat trips. Because of its rich bio-diversity and socio-economic importance, Chilika was designated as a Ramsar site in 1981 to afford better protection.
Chilika is recognized as one of the most important wetlands in the world because it is home to a phenomenal variety of birds. Chilika Lake offers visitors a spectacular display of its colorful avian charms in a thousand different hues presented by over 160 species in the peak season between November and February. The lake and its reed islands teem with nesting birds-white bellied sea eagles, ospreys, golden plovers, sand pipers, flamingos, pelicans, shovellers, gulls, include migratory ones flying great distances from Iran, Central Asia and Siberia.

Chilka Lake (Chilika Lake) is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Orissa state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the World.
It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals. The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources. It sustains more than 150,000 fisher--folk living in 132 villages on the shore and islands.
The lagoon hosts over 160 species of birds in the peak migratory season. Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas come here. These birds travel great distances, but it must be stressed, that the migratory birds probably follow much longer routes than the straight lines, possibly up to 12,000 km, to reach Chilika River.
According to a survey, 45 percent of the birds are terrestrial in nature, 32 percent are waterfowl, and 23 percent are waders. The Lagoon is also home to 14 types of raptors.Around 135 rare and endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins have also been reported. Plus, the lagoon supports about 37 species of reptiles and amphibians.
