Our galaxy - the Milky Way - is a spiral galaxy with arms extending from the center like a pinwheel. Our solar system is in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Our Sun is one of about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way. And our galaxy is just one of roughly 100 billion in the visible universe.
From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars.

They called these objects planets, meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities -- Jupiter, king of the gods; Mars, the god of war; Mercury, messenger of the gods; Venus, the goddess of love and beauty; and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture.
The stargazers also observed comets with sparkling tails, and meteors -- or shooting stars apparently falling from the sky.
Since the invention of the telescope, three more planets have been discovered in our solar system: Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930). Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. In addition, our solar system is populated by thousands of small bodies such as asteroids and comets. Most of the asteroids orbit in a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, while the home of comets lies far beyond the orbit of the dwarf planet Pluto, in the Oort Cloud.
The four planets closest to the sun -- Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars -- are called the terrestrial planets because they have solid rocky surfaces. The four large planets beyond the orbit of Mars -- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune -- are called the gas giants.
Beyond Neptune, on the edge of the Kuiper Belt, tiny, distant, dwarf planet Pluto has a solid but icier surface than the terrestrial planets.
Nearly every planet -- and some moons -- has an atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere is primarily nitrogen and oxygen. Venus has a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, with traces of poisonous gases such as sulfur dioxide. Mars' carbon dioxide atmosphere is extremely thin. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are primarily hydrogen and helium. When Pluto is near the sun, it has a thin atmosphere, but when Pluto travels to the outer regions of its orbit, the atmosphere freezes and collapses to the planet's surface. In that way, Pluto acts like a comet.
There are 146 known natural satellites (also called moons) in orbit around the planets in our solar system, ranging from bodies larger than our own Moon to small pieces of debris. Many of these were discovered by planetary spacecraft. Currently, another 23 moons are awaiting final approval before being added to our solar system's moon count.
Some moons have atmospheres (Saturn's Titan); some even have magnetic fields (Jupiter's Ganymede). Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. An ocean may lie beneath the frozen crust of Jupiter's moon Europa, while images of Jupiter's moon Ganymede show historical motion of icy crustal plates. Some moons may actually be asteroids that were captured by a planet's gravity. The captured asteroids presently counted as moons may include Mars' Phobos and Deimos, several satellites of Jupiter, Saturn's Phoebe, many of Uranus' new satellites, and possibly Neptune's Nereid.
From 1610 to 1977, Saturn was thought to be the only planet with rings. We now know that Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have ring systems, although Saturn's is by far the largest. Particles in these ring systems range in size from dust to boulders to house sized, and may be rocky and/or icy.
Most of the planets also have magnetic fields which extend into space and form a magnetosphere around each planet. These magnetospheres rotate with the planet, sweeping charged particles with them. The sun has a magnetic field, the heliosphere, which envelops our entire solar system.
Ancient astronomers believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe, and that the sun and all the other stars revolved around the Earth. Copernicus proved that Earth and the other planets in our solar system orbit our sun. Little by little, we are charting the Universe, and an obvious question arises: Are there other planets where life might exist? Only recently have astronomers had the tools to indirectly detect large planets around other stars in nearby solar systems.

Gaia is a satellite launched by the European Space Agency ESA in December 2013 with the main objective to measure the positions, motions, and distances (parallaxes) of more than one billion stars in our Milky Way.
From 16-20 November 2015 more than 200 scientists and engineers of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) met in Leiden, Netherlands. They discussed the status and progress of the Gaia mission in preparation of the first Gaia data release, which is planned for late summer 2016.
The GENIUS documentary by Klaus Jäger and Stefan Jordan explains the main goals of the Gaia mission. It also contains interviews and statements from several scientists directly involved in the analysis of the Gaia data. The documentary shows that Gaia is a mission covering many different aspects in astronomy and physics, and also explains how the joint teamwork from more than 400 scientists and engineers will lead to the most precise star catalogue ever.

American English always uses the short scale definition but British English has employed both versions. Historically, the United Kingdom used the long scale billion but since 1974 official UK statistics have used the short scale. A star is a luminous sphere of plasma held together by its own gravity. The nearest star to Earth is the Sun. For at least a portion of its life, a star shines due to thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium in its core, releasing energy that traverses the star's interior and then radiates into outer space. Once the hydrogen in the core of a star is nearly exhausted, almost all naturally occurring elements heavier than helium are created by stellar nucleosynthesis during the star's lifetime and, for some stars, by supernova nucleosynthesis when it explodes. Near the end of its life, a star can also contain degenerate matter. Astronomers can determine the mass, age, metallicity (chemical composition), and many other properties of a star by observing its motion through space, luminosity, and spectrum respectively. The total mass of a star is the principal determinant of its evolution and eventual fate. Other characteristics of a star, including diameter and temperature, change over its life, while the star's environment affects its rotation and movement. A plot of the temperature of many stars against their luminosities, known as a Hertzsprung–Russell diagram (H–R diagram), allows the age and evolutionary state of a star to be determined.

Our galaxy - the Milky Way - is a spiral galaxy with arms extending from the center like a pinwheel. Our solar system is in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Our Sun is one of about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way. And our galaxy is just one of roughly 100 billion in the visible universe. From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars. Eyes on the Solar System: Explore our galactic neighborhood in 3D. They called these objects planets, meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities -- Jupiter, king of the gods; Mars, the god of war; Mercury, messenger of the gods; Venus, the goddess of love and beauty; and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture. The stargazers also observed comets with sparkling tails, and meteors -- or shooting stars apparently falling from the sky. Since the invention of the telescope, three more planets have been discovered in our solar system: Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930). Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. In addition, our solar system is populated by thousands of small bodies such as asteroids and comets. Most of the asteroids orbit in a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, while the home of comets lies far beyond the orbit of the dwarf planet Pluto, in the Oort Cloud. There are 146 known natural satellites (also called moons) in orbit around the planets in our solar system, ranging from bodies larger than our own Moon to small pieces of debris. Many of these were discovered by planetary spacecraft. Currently, another 23 moons are awaiting final approval before being added to our solar system's moon count. Some moons have atmospheres (Saturn's Titan); some even have magnetic fields (Jupiter's Ganymede). Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. An ocean may lie beneath the frozen crust of Jupiter's moon Europa, while images of Jupiter's moon Ganymede show historical motion of icy crustal plates. Some moons may actually be asteroids that were captured by a planet's gravity. The captured asteroids presently counted as moons may include Mars' Phobos and Deimos, several satellites of Jupiter, Saturn's Phoebe, many of Uranus' new satellites, and possibly Neptune's Nereid. From 1610 to 1977, Saturn was thought to be the only planet with rings. We now know that Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have ring systems, although Saturn's is by far the largest. Particles in these ring systems range in size from dust to boulders to house sized, and may be rocky and/or icy. Most of the planets also have magnetic fields which extend into space and form a magnetosphere around each planet. These magnetospheres rotate with the planet, sweeping charged particles with them. The sun has a magnetic field, the heliosphere, which envelops our entire solar system. Ancient astronomers believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe, and that the sun and all the other stars revolved around the Earth. Copernicus proved that Earth and the other planets in our solar system orbit our sun. Little by little, we are charting the Universe, and an obvious question arises: Are there other planets where life might exist? Only recently have astronomers had the tools to indirectly detect large planets around other stars in nearby solar systems. They discussed the status and progress of the Gaia mission in preparation of the first Gaia data release, which is planned for late summer 2016. The GENIUS documentary by Klaus Jäger and Stefan Jordan explains the main goals of the Gaia mission. It also contains interviews and statements from several scientists directly involved in the analysis of the Gaia data. The documentary shows that Gaia is a mission covering many different aspects in astronomy and physics, and also explains how the joint teamwork from more than 400 scientists and engineers will lead to the most precise star catalogue ever. From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars.

There are 146 known natural satellites (also called moons) in orbit around the planets in our solar system, ranging from bodies larger than our own Moon to small pieces of debris. Many of these were discovered by planetary spacecraft. Currently, another 23 moons are awaiting final approval before being added to our solar system's moon count.
Some moons have atmospheres (Saturn's Titan); some even have magnetic fields (Jupiter's Ganymede). Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. An ocean may lie beneath the frozen crust of Jupiter's moon Europa, while images of Jupiter's moon Ganymede show historical motion of icy crustal plates. From 16-20 November 2015 more than 200 scientists and engineers of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) met in Leiden, Netherlands. They discussed the status and progress of the Gaia mission in preparation of the first Gaia data release, which is planned for late summer 2016.
The GENIUS documentary by Klaus Jäger and Stefan Jordan explains the main goals of the Gaia mission. It also contains interviews and statements from several scientists directly involved in the analysis of the Gaia data. The documentary shows that Gaia is a mission covering many different aspects in astronomy and physics, and also explains how the joint teamwork from more than 400 scientists and engineers will lead to the most precise star catalogue ever.
Financial support was provided by the FP7 Gaia-GENIUS project. The Gaia outreach work in Heidelberg is supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Our Solar System is part of the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy with arms which extend from the centre. Each of these arms, which spread out like a pin wheel, has a name. The name of the arm in which our Solar System resides, is the Orion arm. There are about 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, of which our Sun and the Solar System are but one. Each of the other Sun's sit at the centre of their own Solar System, many with their own set of planets and moons.
The Solar System is made up of many objects. These include planets, dwarf planets, moons, the Sun, asteroids and comets. Most of these objects orbit the Sun the the same counter-clockwise direction.
The Solar System was formed 4.5 billion years ago, when a large cloud of gas and dust condensed to form the Sun and all of the other objects we see today. In the beginning, there were many more objects in the Solar System, but over long periods of time, gravity brought these objects together to form the planets and moons that we see today.
In 5 billion years time, our Sun will reach the end of it's life, initially expanding to become a red giant star, before throwing off it's outer layers to become a white dwarf star. During these phases, the Sun will swell in size to swallow the inner terrestrial planets (including the Earth), and the Solar System will no longer exist as we see it today.

Since the invention of the telescope, three more planets have been discovered in our solar system: Uranus (1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930). Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. In addition, our solar system is populated by thousands of small bodies such as asteroids and comets. Most of the asteroids orbit in a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, while the home of comets lies far beyond the orbit of the dwarf planet Pluto, in the Oort Cloud.
The four planets closest to the sun -- Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars -- are called the terrestrial planets because they have solid rocky surfaces. The four large planets beyond the orbit of Mars -- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune -- are called the gas giants.
Beyond Neptune, on the edge of the Kuiper Belt, tiny, distant, dwarf planet Pluto has a solid but icier surface than the terrestrial planets.
Nearly every planet -- and some moons -- has an atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere is primarily nitrogen and oxygen. Venus has a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, with traces of poisonous gases such as sulfur dioxide. Mars' carbon dioxide atmosphere is extremely thin. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are primarily hydrogen and helium. When Pluto is near the sun, it has a thin atmosphere, but when Pluto travels to the outer regions of its orbit, the atmosphere freezes and collapses to the planet's surface. In that way, Pluto acts like a comet.
There are 146 known natural satellites (also called moons) in orbit around the planets in our solar system, ranging from bodies larger than our own Moon to small pieces of debris. Many of these were discovered by planetary spacecraft. Currently, another 23 moons are awaiting final approval before being added to our solar system's moon count.
Some moons have atmospheres (Saturn's Titan); some even have magnetic fields (Jupiter's Ganymede). Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. An ocean may lie beneath the frozen crust of Jupiter's moon Europa, while images of Jupiter's moon Ganymede show historical motion of icy crustal plates. Some moons may actually be asteroids that were captured by a planet's gravity. The captured asteroids presently counted as moons may include Mars' Phobos and Deimos, several satellites of Jupiter, Saturn's Phoebe, many of Uranus' new satellites, and possibly Neptune's Nereid.
From 1610 to 1977, Saturn was thought to be the only planet with rings. We now know that Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have ring systems, although Saturn's is by far the largest. Particles in these ring systems range in size from dust to boulders to house sized, and may be rocky and/or icy.
