'For tiger safari, use only solar or battery-powered vehicles'

Jaipur: The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has said only solar-powered or battery-powered vehicles be used for tiger safari in the buffer and fringe zones in the of the tiger reserves.
NTCA has for the first time issued detailed guidelines for setting up tiger safaris in the buffer and fringe areas of the tiger reserves. The new guidelines come in the wake of state forest and wildlife department proposal for the setting up of a safari park at Aamli, the buffer zone of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve at Sawai Madhopur.
According to new guidelines, only mechanized vehicles run on solar or battery power be allowed to ply and vehicles older than 10 years would be banned. Though the guidelines are made for the safari parks, it could be gradually extended to the reserve as the present system of plying canters and gypsy are very noisy. Forest department officials said the new guidelines are for safari park but its implementation in the tiger reserves like Ranthambore could be considered on the availability of such vehicles.
The guidelines said the last three years average visitation would be taken into consideration while determining the need for a tiger safari. If the carrying capacity is 100 % utilized then only establishing a new tiger safari be considered by the NTCA. It has also fixed the minimum area of a safari park at 40 hectares.
