Dan Gascoigne is a guitarist and songwriter from Coventry. He performs self-penned songs as well as covers arranged in his own style.He began performing at the age of 18. He worked as a session musician on Kristy Gallachers 2012 album “Spinning Plates” on which he played banjo and guitar; he also played on the 2014 follow up album “The Game”. In 2014, Dan launched his first solo album “Station Street West” featuring his own songs. Dan’s guitar teacher and mentor, is Dave Bennett, a local Coventry folk legend. He also plays Banjo, Harmonica and Flute.Sarah Bennett is the middle child of two folk musicians. She grew up visiting folk clubs and festivals, with music and instruments around all the time. When she was fifteen, after sitting in on a lesson her Dad, ragtime guitarist, Dave Bennett, was giving to a pupil, by default, she learnt the bare essentials of fingerstyle guitar. Sarah also plays the ukulele and banjo. = The line-up for the Cork Folk Festival included a feast of music, song, and dance and stories all reflecting the thriving traditional scene in the city. Local musicians featured on the bill included Jimmy MacCarthy, Jimmy Crowley, John Spillane, The Four Star Trio, Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly, Noel Shine & Mary Greene, The Cork Pipers and Singers Clubs etc. The line-up also included some of Ireland’s leading traditional groups including; Sligo’s finest trad band, DERVISH featuring Cathy Jordan on vocals, DANÚ from Na Déise with Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, CHERISH THE LADIES with Joanie Madden from USA, BUILLE featuring the Vallely brothers from Armagh and Gerry Cullen, Phil Callery and Fran McPhail of THE VOICE SQUAD. Also featured at the festival were Donal Lunny, Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan who all featured in The Bothy Band. Over the 36 years of the festival the international element has always added variety and interesting combinations. This year travelling from the UK was the ace guitarist Martin Simpson who last featured in Cork in 1980 with June Tabor. Also from the UK, the musical comical geniuses, THE NEW ROPE STRING BAND who were on their final tour. BAYRISCH came from Germany; they are a trio of Bavarian musicians and performed with Eoin O Riabhaigh, Timmy and Tony McCarthy. Some of the other interesting acts included BALKAN ALIEN SOUND based in Derry, The Céili Allstars, Frankie Lane & Paul Kelly, TWO TIME POLKA, Arundo, and visitors from the Warwick Folk Festival. About:The Cork Folk Festival in October is an annual music event that takes place in Ireland’s southern capitol, Cork. The over 35 year old festival is emerging as one of the most important folk & traditional music events in Ireland and has a growing reputation in Europe. Performances take place in concert halls, music venues, in 30 bars and on the Streets. It features concerts with international, cutting edge and established artists plus lectures, workshops, children’s events, and traditional set dancing. The event has a strong focus on local Cork City, Sliabh Luachra and Cuil Aodha music and song and has plenty of polkas, slides and harrier ballads.History:The opening night, of the long running Festival was on Thursday September 13th 1979 at Douglas GAA Club; (there was no Festival in 1988) Put together from year to year purely on a voluntary basis by a dedicated group of enthusiasts, aided by major sponsorship, and a combination of various sponsors and supporters, including those who over the years contribute financially to the cost of staging the festival, Cork City Council, the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland, Carling, Beamish Irish Stout and CIT, and the Evening Echo etc. Particular recognition for Jim Walsh, Chairman and someone who has been a vital cog in Festival organisation since that very first year, long-serving Festival Director William "Hammy" Hammond, and also Timmy "the Brit" McCarthy, the inspirational figure behind the Festival's inception, as well as its original Director/Secretary.
