Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island and has an area of nearly 230 square kilometers. The easiest way to get here is to fly in, in under an hour from the capital. Or fly to Surat Thani and take a ferry in.
5. Koh Samui’s to-die-for beaches. Chaweng is the most popular beach on the island. It’s 6kms of soft white sand and along the way there is countless bars, restaurants and good shopping. If you like your beaches more private then you should head to Chaweng Cove – a sneaky spot where you can basically swim and sun alone. And a shout out to Lamai Beach for good mix of active and serene.
4. View Point Options on Samui because the island has many hills, its full of incredible places to see the view.
The view Point at Hin Ta Hin Yai is a must see. This is a very popular photo spot and its not just cause the beach is incredibly scenic. The famous rocks here look remarkably like male and female ‘organs’ shall we say. Then for a cheeky 10 baht you can climb to the very top and get a 360 degree view of the whole area and finally the Jungle Club.
3. Spa Options.
Six Senses Samui – each treatment room is set in luxury jungle huts overlooking the ocean and something you HAVE to try if you come here is the Amazing Senses 4 Hands. I swear you will be literally zinging from head to toe.
Tamarind Springs – here the feeling is about being at one with nature. The massage rooms are outdoors and all their staff studies yoga and meditation daily so their energies can be rejuvenating to the clients. Quick tip – don’t miss out on the organic breakfast and post massage juices! But the highlight HAS to be the natural pools and saunas built inside a huge rock.
2. Experiencing Local and International Dishes.
A must do for those who like seafood is the Bophut Fisherman Village. This happens every Friday, and the main streets fill up with food and cute craft vendors. This is a spot for families and there is live music too, but if street delights are your kind of thing then head here with an empty stomach and don’t miss the freshly barbequed items!
For fine dining, my personal pick is Zazen Restaurant at the resort of the same name also in Bophut. If you are in the mood for romance – come here! The restaurant is decked out in Moroccan finery, but serves Mediterranean and Thai infused cuisine.

On Day 2 in Koh Samui (be sure to check out Day 1 if you haven’t already: ) we woke up after a great night’s sleep at Santiburi Beach Resort. The first thing I did in the morning was take a morning swim - one of the best times to take a swim with the sun is not strong, the water is calm, and it’s peaceful and quiet. After a swim in the ocean at Mae Nam beach, we continued onto breakfast at the hotel. Breakfast was a buffet style, and it was pretty typically of any hotel buffet - including all the stations of different types of food. I went straight for the omelet, and loaded it with chilies and fish sauce. Breakfast was excellent.
After finishing breakfast, we headed to Santiburi Country Club to take a quick tour of their golf course. The course is the only full course on Koh Samui, and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Thailand. We drove around the course on a golf cart, stopping at some of the main holes to get a wonderful view of Koh Samui.
Then it was time for lunch… and this turned out to be one of the best lunches and probably the best meals I had in Koh Samui. Food in Koh Samui is sort of hard - there are many Thai restaurants that cater to tourists, and at those restaurant the food can be good, but it also might not be that good. It really depends. But in my opinion, one of the best ways to find the best restaurants in Koh Samui for local southern Thai food is to go to the roadside, or neighborhood local curry and rice restaurants, in Thai called Khao Gaeng. Recommended by some staff from our hotel, we headed over to Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) for lunch. We arrived right at lunch time, so the restaurant was busy and unfortunately some of the dishes had already sold out. But they still have plenty of curry left, and so Ying and I ordered a nice selection of different southern Thai food to eat. We ended up ordering about 5 different dishes. The gaeng moo (แกงหมู), pork curry, was curried in a thick and rich coconut milk curry and the curry paste flavor was vibrant. We also ordered a chicken curry which was equally as good. All the other dishes were also excellent, and it really was probably the best Thai meal I had in Koh Samui.
After lunch at Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) restaurant, we headed back to Santiburi and just hung around all afternoon enjoying the beautiful atmosphere and transferring to different lounge positions. It was an excellent day in Koh Samui.
That completes Day 2 of our short trip to Koh Samui.

Ko Samui
Ko Samui (or Koh Samui, Thai: เกาะสมุย, Thai pronunciation: [kɔ̀ sàmūj]) is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, Thailand. Geographically in the Chumphon Archipelago, it is administratively part of Surat Thani Province. Ko Samui is Thailand's second-largest island after Phuket, with an area of 228.7 km2, a population of over 63,000 and a hotel occupancy rate of 73% as the number of visitors increases. Abundant tourist resources, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and coconut trees are present on the island.
History
The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to 1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name samui is mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui. Some people believe that the word "samui" derives from the Malay word "saboey", or "safe haven", although there appears to be no credible corroboration of this. Ko is the Thai word for "island".

5. Koh Samui’s to-die-for beaches. Chaweng is the most popular beach on the island. It’s 6kms of soft white sand and along the way there is countless bars, restaurants and good shopping. If you like your beaches more private then you should head to Chaweng Cove – a sneaky spot where you can basically swim and sun alone. And a shout out to Lamai Beach for good mix of active and serene.
4. View Point Options on Samui because the island has many hills, its full of incredible places to see the view.
The view Point at Hin Ta Hin Yai is a must see. This is a very popular photo spot and its not just cause the beach is incredibly scenic. The famous rocks here look remarkably like male and female ‘organs’ shall we say. Then for a cheeky 10 baht you can climb to the very top and get a 360 degree view of the whole area and finally the Jungle Club.
3. Spa Options.
Six Senses Samui – each treatment room is set in luxury jungle huts overlooking the ocean and something you HAVE to try if you come here is the Amazing Senses 4 Hands. I swear you will be literally zinging from head to toe.
Tamarind Springs – here the feeling is about being at one with nature. The massage rooms are outdoors and all their staff studies yoga and meditation daily so their energies can be rejuvenating to the clients. Quick tip – don’t miss out on the organic breakfast and post massage juices! But the highlight HAS to be the natural pools and saunas built inside a huge rock.
2. Experiencing Local and International Dishes.
A must do for those who like seafood is the Bophut Fisherman Village. This happens every Friday, and the main streets fill up with food and cute craft vendors. This is a spot for families and there is live music too, but if street delights are your kind of thing then head here with an empty stomach and don’t miss the freshly barbequed items!
For fine dining, my personal pick is Zazen Restaurant at the resort of the same name also in Bophut. If you are in the mood for romance – come here! The restaurant is decked out in Moroccan finery, but serves Mediterranean and Thai infused cuisine.

On Day 2 in Koh Samui (be sure to check out Day 1 if you haven’t already: ) we woke up after a great night’s sleep at Santiburi Beach Resort. The first thing I did in the morning was take a morning swim - one of the best times to take a swim with the sun is not strong, the water is calm, and it’s peaceful and quiet. After a swim in the ocean at Mae Nam beach, we continued onto breakfast at the hotel. Breakfast was a buffet style, and it was pretty typically of any hotel buffet - including all the stations of different types of food. I went straight for the omelet, and loaded it with chilies and fish sauce. Breakfast was excellent.
After finishing breakfast, we headed to Santiburi Country Club to take a quick tour of their golf course. The course is the only full course on Koh Samui, and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Thailand. We drove around the course on a golf cart, stopping at some of the main holes to get a wonderful view of Koh Samui.
Then it was time for lunch… and this turned out to be one of the best lunches and probably the best meals I had in Koh Samui. Food in Koh Samui is sort of hard - there are many Thai restaurants that cater to tourists, and at those restaurant the food can be good, but it also might not be that good. It really depends. But in my opinion, one of the best ways to find the best restaurants in Koh Samui for local southern Thai food is to go to the roadside, or neighborhood local curry and rice restaurants, in Thai called Khao Gaeng. Recommended by some staff from our hotel, we headed over to Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) for lunch. We arrived right at lunch time, so the restaurant was busy and unfortunately some of the dishes had already sold out. But they still have plenty of curry left, and so Ying and I ordered a nice selection of different southern Thai food to eat. We ended up ordering about 5 different dishes. The gaeng moo (แกงหมู), pork curry, was curried in a thick and rich coconut milk curry and the curry paste flavor was vibrant. We also ordered a chicken curry which was equally as good. All the other dishes were also excellent, and it really was probably the best Thai meal I had in Koh Samui.
After lunch at Lan Saka (ร้านลานสกา) restaurant, we headed back to Santiburi and just hung around all afternoon enjoying the beautiful atmosphere and transferring to different lounge positions. It was an excellent day in Koh Samui.
That completes Day 2 of our short trip to Koh Samui.

While Samui is small enough to be circumnavigated in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car, the island features such a variety of beaches and activities that it would be impossible to experience everything in a single visit. However, this was not always the case. Until the late 20th century, Samui was home to a small community engaged primarily in fishing and harvesting coconuts. There were not even any roads on the island until the early 1970’s. However, once foreign visitors discovered this island gem, lush with tropical forest, fringed with palm tree lined stretches of golden sand, and surrounded by pellucid, aquamarine water, development quickly followed. Today the beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are bustling beach towns with fabulous beach resorts, internationally acclaimed restaurants, and world-class nightclubs. Activities around Ko Samui include cooking courses, yoga instruction, Muay Thai training, scuba diving, and even golf. While there are a few quieter beaches that are ideal for relaxation, particularly those that feature some of the finest 5-star resorts in the world, and some that exude old world charm, such as Bo Phut, which features converted, old Chinese shop houses, Samui is a lively, exciting place than it was a few decades ago. Samui is the third largest island in Thailand and the largest in an archipelago of more than 80 islands that includes the Ang Thong National Marine Park, a kayaking paradise and day trip from Ko Samui. While Samui is small enough to be circumnavigated in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car, the island features such a variety of beaches and activities that it would be impossible to experience everything in a single visit. However, this was not always the case. Until the late 20th century, Samui was home to a small community engaged primarily in fishing and harvesting coconuts. There were not even any roads on the island until the early 1970’s. However, once foreign visitors discovered this island gem, lush with tropical forest, fringed with palm tree lined stretches of golden sand, and surrounded by pellucid, aquamarine water, development quickly followed. Today the beaches of Chaweng and Lamai are bustling beach towns with fabulous beach resorts, internationally acclaimed restaurants, and world-class nightclubs. Activities around Ko Samui include cooking courses, yoga instruction, Muay Thai training, scuba diving, and even golf. While there are a few quieter beaches that are ideal for relaxation, particularly those that feature some of the finest 5-star resorts in the world, and some that exude old world charm, such as Bo Phut, which features converted, old Chinese shop houses, Samui is a lively, exciting place than it was a few decades ago. Ko Samui has developed into its own style of island paradise, retaining much of its natural beauty while offering nearly every imaginable activity or service for the ultimate beach holiday.
As the second most popular Thai island, Koh Samui is easy to get to via land, boat, or air. There are numerous boats from Surat Thani province on the Thai mainland as well as from neighboring islands Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The Koh Samui international airport is served primarily by Bangkok airways, which flies to and from Koh Samui and seven domestic and international destinations. Once on the island there are many ways of getting around Koh Samui. Rental bicycles, motorbikes, and cars, both with and without drivers, are easily available, as are songtaews and taxis for getting around and between beaches.

Ko Samui (เกาะสมุย), (pronounced gaw (vowel like ou in cough) sà mui) is an island located in the Chumphon Archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, some 700 km south of Bangkok and about 80 km from the eastern coastline of Southern Thailand.
Beaches
=======
Ko Samui is a fairly big island. The most popular and commercialised beaches are Chaweng and Lamai, while the northern beaches and their adjacent villages of Mae Nam, Bophut, Bang Rak (Big Buddha) and Choeng Mon are more peaceful choices, and the west coast beaches are still (comparatively) quiet. Update: Bophut and Choeng Mon are not much good for swimming because of murky seawater. Chaweng and Lamai have much clearer seawater, so better for swimming
Clockwise from Nathon on the west coast, the main beaches are:
Nathon — Samui's port and administrative centre, but with little to attract the tourist
Laem Yai — set on the Northwest tip of the island, a secluded beach overlooking the islands of Ang Thong
Mae Nam — a quiet and beautiful beach on the northern coast
Bophut — known for its fisher's village, laid-back but growing fast
Bang Rak — at the northeastern tip, home of the Big Buddha
Choeng Mon — quiet north shore beach
Chaweng — the largest and most-developed beach, with a curious mix of luxury hotels and backpacker guesthouses and a hopping nightlife
Lamai — Samui's "second" beach south of Chaweng, quieter than Chaweng but still has nightlife, swank resorts and restaurants
Samui South Coast — the small beaches of Ban Hua Thanon, Na Khai, Laem Set, Bang Kao and Thong Krut
The major reason why people come to Samui is to enjoy the beaches. Even though the two main beaches of Chaweng and Lamai have generally suffered due to mass development over the past decade they are still relatively impressive. Development has been thwarted slightly because of the island’s regulation governing building heights.
Other than lying on the beach with a cold beer in hand and ogling at the babes and hunks sauntering past, there isn't all that much to see on the island. A certain pair of rocks on Lamai amuses some visitors, Bang Rak has a large but nondescript Buddha statue, and there are some waterfalls (notably Na Muang) of minor interest
Chaweng Beach is the major beach on Ko Samui and one that has developed tremendously since the early 1990s. Just 20 years ago the beach was home to just a sprinkle of wooden bungalows but now the place is swamped with hotels, Italian pizzerias, Irish pubs, and even go-go bars. Samui’s night life is becoming legendary but unfortunately not always attracting the best standard of tourist. Chaweng’s once ‘hippie’-only backpackers have given way to a lot of "lager louts". Chaweng is the place for a rowdy reckless party scene.
Lamai Beach Like Chaweng, Lamai has been transformed from a ‘hippy’ hangout into a fun, party place packed out with bars and night life. The beach is still in better condition than Chaweng and the place doesn't get quite so crowded, although some are shallow and have rocks. At the southern end of Lamai, there are some odd-looking rock formations. If it's a quiet relaxing location you are after, then Lamai won’t be the ideal place for you. Lamai is in southeast Samui, about ten km south of Chaweng.
Mae Nam Beach This quiet beach, located in the north of the island is decent enough for swimming and sunbathing, especially for families with children, due to the shallow water.
Bophut Beach situated in the north of the island, is a popular starting point for diving tours. The place isn't in any way as developed as Chaweng but there are still plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars.
Choengmon Beach is in northeast Samui just 10 minutes from Chaweng. Unlike the latter it is a perfect place for relaxing.
Big Buddha Beach Located in northeast Samui, Big Buddha offers visitors good swimming and lovely views. The area has developed a lot over the past few years and there are now many restaurants, shops, and bars.
Nathon - The island's major seafront settlement where shops, restaurants, and tour agencies are concentrated.
Namtok Hin Lat – This waterfall is easily accessible by car. Some of the numerous tiny levels have large basins for swimmers.
Namtok Na Mueang – A local road leads to the Na Mueang 1 Waterfall. A walk of about 30 minutes ends up at the more scenic Na Mueang 2 Waterfall. Purple rocks surround the stream of water, which gushes in from an impressive height of around 79 m.
Ban Lipa Yai – This village grows high-quality fruits, including rambutan, durian, mangosteen, and the famed langsat.

My wife Ying and I were invited to stay at Santiburi Beach Resort (http://www.agoda.com/santiburi-beach-resort-spa/hotel/samui-th.html?CID=1452029 affiliate link) on the island of Koh Samui for a couple of nights, and since neither of us had ever been to Koh Samui, we decided to go for it.
How to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui: There are a number of different options, depending on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to take. The fastest and most expensive way is to take a direct flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui on either Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways. The cheaper way to go is to take a flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani (สุราษฎร์ธานี), then take a bus to Donsak pier, and then take a ferry to Koh Samui - that’s what we did. You could also alternatively take a bus to Surat and do the same thing. We took a flight with Air Asia, which took 1 hour, then we took a bus which took another 1.5 hours to the ferry terminal. Then we had a 45 minute layover, and took the Seatran Ferry to Koh Samui which also took 1.5 hours. We left Bangkok at about 7 am and arrived in Koh Samui just after noon.
For our first lunch, we headed to a restaurant right at Nathon in Koh Samui just a 10 minute walk from the ferry. The food was alright, but not anything amazing. The best dish for me was the gaeng som, sour curry with turmeric and fish. That was pretty good, but the rest of the food was alright at best. After having a quick lunch, Ying and I jumped in the back of a rot songthaew (the back of the truck pickup public transportation in Thailand) and headed north to a beach on Koh Samui called Mae Nam. We got dropped off right in front of Santiburi Beach Resort and then walked into our resort for the next 2 nights.
Santiburi Beach Resort was incredible - and we had an ocean view villa right on the beach. The inside of our villa was probably the nicest place I’ve ever stayed. The design was elegant Thai, and there was an open seating room, then the main bedroom, and a giant bathroom with a circular tub, two sinks, and a huge walk in closet. Just outside the shower was a private courtyard with out own personal swimming pool. Santiburi Beach Resort was was even better outside - the grounds were well manicured with tropical flowers and plants, and the beach was perfectly maintained, quiet, and with a nice view of Koh Pha Ngan in the background. The water was beautiful. They invited us to try the spa, so that afternoon we went to enjoy the spa and I had the most amazing spa massage I’ve ever had - but I’ve only had a massage a few times in my life - nevertheless it was amazing. For dinner we ate at Santiburi Beach Resort and their beachside restaurant called Rim Talay. Overlooking the beach, it was a beautiful atmosphere and they served international food. The food was overall very good.
