The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of the Arusha Region.
It has been reported in 2009 that the government authority has proposed a reduction of the population of the conservation area from 65,000 to 25,000. There are plans being considered for 14 more luxury tourist hotels, so people can access "the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries". None of the senior level positions in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is yet held by a member of the local Maasai pastoralists.
Ngorongoro was named by the Maasai as El-Nkoronkoro meaning Gift of Life. This was because they were migrating from Central Africa for a permanent settlement. That is why the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is mostly occupied by the Maasai. Based on fossil evidence found at the Olduvai Gorge, various hominid species have occupied the area for 3 million years.
The term highland or uplands is used to denote any mountainous region or elevated mountainous plateau. Generally speaking, upland (or uplands) tends to refer to ranges of hills, typically up to 500-600 m. Highland (or highlands) is usually reserved for ranges of low mountains.
Probably the most known highlands in the anglophone world are the Scottish Highlands in the United Kingdom, the mountainous region north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. The Highland council area is a local government area in the Scottish Highlands and Britain's largest local government area.
Many countries have areas that are officially or unofficially referred to as highlands. Other than Scotland, these include parts Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Yemen, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Syria, Cantabria and Nova Scotia (the latter being Latin for 'New Scotland' due to its resemblance to the country).
Synonymous terms used in other countries include high country, used in New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Southern Queensland in Australia, and parts of the United States (notably Western North Carolina), and highveld, used in South Africa.

Travel video about destination Ngorongoro. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is not only a wonder of nature but also home to some fascinating wildlife. The dense area of the Lerai Forest in the southern part of the crater is a world itself within Ngorongoro. The vegetation provides a habitat for many hungry plant eaters among which is the elephant. This rainy, elevated location is eighteen hundred metres above sea level. The crater is the stomping ground of the Massai who have lived here for several centuries. However, they were forced to move their settlements from the crater to an area outside Ngorongoro as their herds were a threat to the protected indigenous wildlife. Some of the most striking animals in the large crater area of Ngorongoro are the...

Safari in the South Eastern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation are in February 2013. The short rains are all but over and the Main rainy season starts in March. Rains have been poor and the area is drier than usual. The Great Migration is in the area and even a little further south, as the Wildebeeste and Zebra follow whatever rain showers still occur. The Lake Ndutu area is very good for holding a variety of game due to the availibility of fresh water streams and the fact that it is quite wooded, which attracts the browsers. We also saw leopards, elephants and hartebeeste around the woodland. If you are thinkin...

Crater Lions Of Ngorongoro African - National Geographic Animal The crater has one of the densest known population of Masai lions,[22] numbering 62 in 2001.[19] A side effect of the crater being a natural enclosure is that the lion population is significantly inbred. This is due to the very small amount of new bloodlines that enter the local gene pool, as very few migrating male lions enter the crater from the outside. Those who do enter the crater are often prevented from contributing to the gene pool by the crater's male lions, who expel any outside competitors.[1] Long-term data imply that lions in the crater were struck by four deadly disease outbreaks between 1962 and 2002.[23] Drought in 1961 and rains throughout the 1962 dry season caused a massive build-up of blood-sucking stable...
