Nairobi is Kenya’s bustling capital city, often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips. In addition to its urban core, the city has Nairobi National Park, a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to giraffes, zebras and lions. Next to it is a well-regarded elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Nairobi
Nairobi (/naɪˈroʊbi/; locally [naɪˈroːbi]) is the capital and largest city of Kenya. It is famous for having the Nairobi National Park, the world’s only game reserve found within a major city. The city and its surrounding area also form Nairobi County, whose current governor is Evans Kidero.
The name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "cool water". The phrase is also the Maasai name of the Nairobi river, which in turn lent its name to the city. However, it is popularly known as the "Green City in the Sun", and is surrounded by several expanding villa suburbs.
Nairobi was founded in 1899 by the colonial authorities in British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Uganda Railway. The town quickly grew to replace Machakos as the capital of Kenya in 1907. After independence in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya. During Kenya's colonial period, the city became a centre for the colony's coffee, tea and sisal industry. The city lies on the River Athi in the southern part of the country, and has an elevation of 1,795 metres (5,889 ft) above sea level.

Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/; locally [ˈkɛɲa]), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC). Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly called Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi), and had a population of approximately 45 million people in July 2014.
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland, in the Nyanza region, there is a hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighboring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse climate and geography, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu and numerous beaches, including in Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year.

Jonny here, right now I am at Borana Ranch, high on the Laikipia Plateau, in the lee of Mount Kenya. And in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kenya.
If I asked what's the first thing you think about when turning your mind to travel in this colourful East African country, you'd almost certainly say wildlife. And of course you'd be right as over 80 percent of holidays here will have a wildlife element.
From the Marsabit National Park in the north, to the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks in the south, the planes of Kenya are teeming with wildlife or all shapes and sizes offering, along with its neighbour Tanzania, the best place in the world to view game. And if you throw in Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, the Laikipia Plateau and the Matthews Range, the Lamu Archipelago and the rest of the Kenyan coast, and some of the most spectacular and evocative accommodation anywhere on earth, then here in Kenya you have a true world class travel experience.
The Masai Mara is probably the most famous national park. Covering more than 500sqm, the Mara is universally renowned for its exceptional populations of lion, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo and giraffe and for the famous migration of wildebeest that takes place every year from July to October.
But the Masai Mara is by no means the only show in town. Further to the east you have Amboseli National Park with its epic views of Kilimanjaro, to the north you have Samburu, Marsabit and Meru National Parks, and here on Laikipia, in the Lewa conservancy, where the savannah is awash with elephants, giraffe, the quirky Grevy zebra and a new and burgeoning population of black rhino.
And as for the accommodation, well that is quite simply out of this world. Yes, to get the best you're going to pay, but in our opinion the experience you'll enjoy and quality of service you'll receive -- plus of course the game you'll see -- does make this value for money. There is simply nothing else like it on earth. Among many amazing places to stay, my personal favourites are Else's Kopje in Meru, Saruni in Samburu, Richard's Camp or Serian in the Mara, and either Sabuk or Borana here on the Laikipia Plateau.
But tourism in Kenya is not only about wild animals. The Kenyan Coast, stretching all the way from Diani Beach in the south the Lamu archipelago in the north, with its white sand beaches and gentle turquoise seas -- particularly when the trade winds are blowing in the right direction from November through to March -- again coupled with some fabulous accommodation, combine to make this a truly world class beach experience.
And if you like to meet the people -- an important factor in most Wild Frontiers adventures -- there are plenty of opportunities, particularly at Sarara, in the Matthews Range, at Il Ngwesi north or Mount Kenya and here at Borana.
To get around there is are great quality land cruisers, a brilliant air service, either in scheduled flights or on private charters, a classic bi-plane, or if you really want to push the boat out and get to places few others can reach, a truly amazing helicopter service, run by our friends at Tropic Air.
A classic African safari is a travel experience like no other, and one that all travellers should do at least once in their lives. And for that, in my opinion, there's nowhere better than Kenya.

Paar daagjes Nairobi en weer terug naar Hola (video/audio) Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.104) “Van Erf en Akker” Paar daagjes Nairobi en weer terug naar Hola. We waren een paar dagen in Nairobi om het gezin te begeleiden op weg naar een langer verlof in Nederland. Dat betekende dat we dik 7 weken in ons eentje in Hola zouden verblijven. Tegelijkertijd hadden we ook de gelegenheid om nog wat extra actie te ondernemen om onze assistent te helpen bij het verkrijgen van een visum voor Nederland waar hij dan een praktijkstage zou gaan volgen. Het viel niet mee om een visum te verkrijgen en dan praten we nu over 1973. Vreemdelingen uit o.a. Kenya werden niet zomaar toegelaten. Daarna zou hij weer onmiddellijk terugkeren naar zijn gezin in Hola.
Gelijkertijd zagen een grote groep Aziaten die al maanden voor het Britse consulaat in Nairobi kampeerden in afwachting van het verkrijgen van een verblijfsvisum voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De Britten waren daar zeker niet scheutig mee.
Moeder de vrouw en de kinderen vertrokken en wij bleven nog even achter in Nairobi. Zodoende hadden we de gelegenheid om een 1 mei viering in het Uhurupark in Nairobi bij te wonen.
De president sprak er met krachtige stem en hield de menigte voor dat ze respect moesten hebben voor de buitenlanders (expatriates). Vooral ook respect moesten tonen ten opzichte van de vrouw in Kenya en hen als gelijken van de mannen te behandelen.
Kolonialen plachten vroeger een zwarte Kenyaan aan te spreken met “boy” en dat moest klaar zijn zei de president. Wederzijds respect daar ging het om en daar paste de aanspreektaal “boy” absoluut niet meer bij
We bewonderden die Mzee Yomo Kenyatta wel ofschoon hij natuurlijk ook geen heilige was en machtspelletjes tot de orde van de dag behoorden waarbij zelfverrijking ook vaak voorkwam.
Maar om een land met vele verschillenden bevolkingsgroepen bijeen te houden is een kunst en die vaardigheid verstond hij ofschoon daarbij soms een harde hand gebruikt moest worden.
We keerden weer terug naar Hola naar ons huis waar we het maar stilletjes en erg leeg vonden. Zeven weken in je eentje in dit oord is een aparte ervaring.
Maar het vele werk dat er op de akkers stond te wachten deed de tijd toch snel voorbijgaan.

De periode dat we in Kenya waren lag in de jaren 1967 tot en met 1975. In die tijd in de leeftijd van 26 tot 34 jaar schreven we met enige regelmaat columns voor het blad van de Noord-Brabantse Maatschappij van Landbouw. Daarbij werd het dagelijkse leven op het project en het privéleven belicht.

Paar daagjes Nairobi en weer terug naar Hola.
We waren een paar dagen in Nairobi om het gezin te begeleiden op weg naar een langer verlof in Nederland. Dat betekende dat we dik 7 weken in ons eentje in Hola zouden verblijven.
Tegelijkertijd hadden we ook de gelegenheid om nog wat extra actie te ondernemen om onze assistent te helpen bij het verkrijgen van een visum voor Nederland waar hij dan een praktijkstage zou gaan volgen.
Het viel niet mee om een visum te verkrijgen en dan praten we nu over 1973. Vreemdelingen uit o.a. Kenya werden niet zomaar toegelaten. Let wel we hadden het niet over een “vluchteling” maar gewoon een Kenyaanse jongeman die alleen maar naar ons land wilde gaan om er wat te leren. Daarna zou hij weer onmiddellijk terugkeren naar zijn gezin in Hola.
Gelijkertijd zagen een grote groep Aziaten die al maanden voor het Britse consulaat in Nairobi kampeerden in afwachting van het verkrijgen van een verblijfsvisum voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De Britten waren daar zeker niet scheutig mee.
Moeder de vrouw en de kinderen vertrokken en wij bleven nog even achter in Nairobi. Zodoende hadden we de gelegenheid om een 1 mei viering in het Uhurupark in Nairobi bij te wonen.
De president sprak er met krachtige stem en hield de menigte voor dat ze respect moesten hebben voor de buitenlanders (expatriates). Vooral ook respect moesten tonen ten opzichte van de vrouw in Kenya en hen als gelijken van de mannen te behandelen.
Kolonialen plachten vroeger een zwarte Kenyaan aan te spreken met “boy” en dat moest klaar zijn zei de president. Wederzijds respect daar ging het om en daar paste de aanspreektaal “boy” absoluut niet meer bij
We bewonderden die Mzee Yomo Kenyatta wel ofschoon hij natuurlijk ook geen heilige was en machtspelletjes tot de orde van de dag behoorden waarbij zelfverrijking ook vaak voorkwam.
Maar om een land met vele verschillenden bevolkingsgroepen bijeen te houden is een kunst en die vaardigheid verstond hij ofschoon daarbij soms een harde hand gebruikt moest worden.
We keerden weer terug naar Hola naar ons huis waar we het maar stilletjes en erg leeg vonden. Zeven weken in je eentje in dit oord is een aparte ervaring.
Maar het vele werk dat er op de akkers stond te wachten deed de tijd toch snel voorbijgaan.
