Major David Leslie William Sheldrick, MBE (born 23 November 1919, Alexandria, Egypt — died 13 June 1977, Nairobi, Kenya) was a Kenyan farmer and park warden, in memoriam to whom the eponymous David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) was created by his widow, Daphne (later Dame Daphne Sheldrick) in Nairobi.
David Sheldrick, an only child, came to Kenya as an infant with his parents. His father, had served with the British Remounts during World War I, resettled near Nyeri and became a coffee farmer at Mweiga.
Educated at the Canford School, David Sheldrick returned to Kenya until World War II began in 1939. He served in the King's African Rifles (KAR), seeing active service in Abyssinia and Burma. He was promoted to Major, the youngest officer in the KAR to achieve this rank.
At the age of 28 in 1948, David Sheldrick became the founder Warden of Tsavo, Kenya's largest National Park. He had to deal with the problem of armed poachers, which he was forced to combat by utilizing staff from the Game Department and National Parks. He studied every facet of the elephants' lifestyle on the preserve, collecting data on their food sources, and, along with his wife, Daphne, rescuing and hand-rearing vulnerable elephants, rhinos and antelopes.
The term wildlife trust can be used in one of two senses to describe organisations concerned with wildlife:
Wildlife trusts (other than those that are part of the UK movement The Wildlife Trusts):
David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a Kenyan wildlife conservation charity founded in 1977 in memory of David Sheldrick by his widow Daphne Sheldrick. It assists and advises the Kenya Wildlife Service and manages an orphanage for elephants and rhinos. This trust is reintegrating orphaned elephants back into the Kenyan wildlife, and is a World Elephant Day associate.
The trust recently released a video on its YouTube channel, celebrating their 100,000th fan on Facebook.
Wildlife traditionally refers to non-domesticated animal species, but has come to include all plants, fungi, and other organisms that grow or live wild in an area without being introduced by humans.
Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems. Deserts, forests, rain forests, plains, grasslands, and other areas including the most developed urban sites, all have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that much wildlife is affected by human activities.
Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social, and moral sense. Some animals, however, have adapted to suburban environments. This includes such animals as domesticated cats, dogs, mice, and gerbils. Some religions have often declared certain animals to be sacred, and in modern times concern for the natural environment has provoked activists to protest the exploitation of wildlife for human benefit or entertainment.

We rescued Humpty after she became stuck in the mud, trapped in a fast drying pond in Lamu, Northern Kenya. Tiny and weak, she would have died if left on her own – thankfully, our team were able to rescue her and bring her to our Kaluku Field Heaquarters where she was offered rehydration fluids, milk and a long shower for her delicate skin. Humpty is in safe hands now, and has fast become known as a headstrong individual who loves nothing more than to wallow in her pool or suckle on her carers’ fingers. I visited my orphans again on July 1st at the DSWT orphanage in Nairobi. During the visitor hour from 11am-12noon, it's open to the public. I noticed that it's become much more crowded since my last time 2 years ago, so get there early. Also, I loved seeing so many local school children there. These elephants are their heritage and need their understanding in knowing how important it is to preserve their wildlife in general and stop the poaching and ivory trade. Or there is no future for them. Thank you DSWT for all you have done and continue to do for the orphan elephants, setting an example for the rest of the world with your hard work. By-the-way,.... some of the orphans seemed a bit naughty today!
On 15th September an iconic bull elephant in Tsavo was saved thanks to the combined efforts of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Kenya Wildlife Service. DSWT Pilot Neville Sheldrick spotted the injured elephant while on patrol and immediately raised the alarm. That was the moment this elephant's fate began to change, from what would have been a slow agonising death caused by a poison arrow to what will be his recovery and a second chance. Every orphan of ivory poaching once had a family. This is their story. ‘I will always remember you’ shows how elephant families are being torn apart by ivory poaching. As portrayed through Hugo Guinness’ animation, portraying the life saving work of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. At the orphanage we build a future for rescued elephants and provide infant victims of the ivory trade with a second chance. Please SHARE widely! Hugo Guinness’ animation, created entirely through painstaking pen to paper illustrations, was produced by Allegra Pilkington and Luisa Crosbie. It was inspired from the artwork, vision and heart of Hugo and took 5 months to create. The original music for the film was composed by Joe Trapanese. Thanks for checking out our latest video for the ECONIC EARTH FOUNDATION where we travelled to Nairobi National Park and the 'David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust' to visit some of the elephants we sponsor through the non profit! We must continue supporting organizations like this one as well as promote ecotourism and visiting wildlife in their natural habitats. Currently 80-100 elephants are being killed each day primarily for their ivory, which must be stopped. Greater support is always needed and we encourage you to get involved in anyway you can to help preserve this incredible majestic species. For more than four decades, Dame Daphne Sheldrick has devoted her life to rescuing orphaned animals in East Africa and preparing them for return to the wild on her elephant orphanage near Nairobi, Kenya. An extraordinary conservationist, Dame Daphne is the first person to successfully hand-rear newborn elephants, thanks in large part to the formula she perfected to mimic a mother elephant's milk. Her work is featured in the Museum's current IMAX feature, Born to Be Wild, playing now through June 30. On May 8, 2012, Dame Daphne spoke at the Museum and discussed her book Love, Life, and Elephants: An African Love Story. *** Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=AMNHorg Check out our full video catalog: http://www.youtube.com/user/AMNHorg Facebook...

We took Intrepid Travel's "Gorillas and Game Parks" trip in February 2017. We traveled to Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda to see mountain gorillas, elephants, chimpanzees, black and white rhinos, water buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and more. We toured a village in Rwanda and went whitewater rafting on the Nile in Uganda. In Nairobi, we visited the Giraffe Centre and the nursery for the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Orphan Project (twice!).

Africa's elephants are hurtling towards extinction to fuel the worldwide ivory trade. While conservationists howl and corrupt governments fail to address the ongoing slaughter, one brave family has been working for decades to stem the tide, one elephant at a time. Gardeners of Eden is a gripping, first-person experience inside the operations of Kenya's David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. From the front lines of the crisis, we witness their heroic efforts to stop the poachers in the bush, rescue the orphans of slain elephants and raise them by hand, until one day, returning them to their home in the wild.
