Shadows (1922 film)

Shadows is a dramatic 1922 silent film starring Lon Chaney, Marguerite De La Motte, Harrison Ford and John St. Polis. Shadows is a tale of deception, sacrifice and humility by a gentle Chinese immigrant in a small New England town directed by Tom Forman.

Plot

A boastful and proud yet abusive fisherman by the name of Daniel Gibbs (Walter Long) leaves his wife Sympathy (De La Motte) to go on a fishing expedition with other villagers from their village of Urkey and is lost at sea. Two men survive, one villager and a mysterious Chinese stranger named Yen Sin (Chaney). Being Chinese and refusing to take part in Christian service for those lost, he is made an outcast and forced to live on a small boat in the harbor. He makes his living doing laundry from his boat, and is soon greeted by the new minister, John Malden (Ford), who tries unsuccessfully to convert him. Love blossoms between Reverend Malden and Sympathy, and they are soon married, to the chagrin of the wealthiest member of the village, Nate Snow (St. Polis). Sympathy soon befriends Yen Sin after she observes several kids taunting him in the street.

Shadows (novel)

Shadows is a novel written by British author Tim Bowler and was first published in 1999. The Young Telegraph described the novel as having 'lots of pace, action and a couple of shocking twists!' It tells the story of Jamie, a 16-year-old living in Ashingford who used to enjoy playing squash. It is revealed in the book that he stopped liking the sport after his family moved to Ashingford.

Jamie is under pressure from his father to succeed. In the competitive world of squash, his dad is determined that Jamie should succeed where he failed. The emotional and physical bullying that Jamie has to endure makes him recoil into himself until he feels backed into a corner and doesn't know where to turn.

But Jamie does't share his father's single-minded ambition and is desperate to escape from the verbal and physical abuse that follows when he fails. Then Jamie finds the girl hiding in his shed, and in helping her to escape from her past and the danger that is pursuing her, he is able to put his own problems in perspective and realize that he must come out of the shadows and face up to his father.

Shadows (Gordon Lightfoot album)

Shadows is Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's fifteenth original album, released in 1982 on the Warner Brothers Records label. It peaked at #87 on the Billboard charts.

The album marked another significant turning point in Lightfoot's musical evolution. He moves further away from his acoustic roots through greater use of synthesisers and electric organ, marking his entry into the adult contemporary genre.

The album is softer in composition than its immediate predecessors with a return to slower, more introspective ballads as compared to the faster, country style of Lightfoot's mid-1970s albums.

Although a commercial failure (Lightfoot referred to it as "the music industry's best-kept secret"), critical reception of the album was positive.

"Baby Step Back" peaked at #17 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #50 on the Pop chart.

Clock

A clock is an instrument to indicate, keep, and co-ordinate time. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". A silent instrument missing such a striking mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece. In general usage today a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are often distinguished from clocks.

The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to consistently measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day, the lunar month, and the year. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia. A sundial shows the time by displaying the position of a shadow on a flat surface. There are a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Water clocks, along with the sundials, are possibly the oldest time-measuring instruments. A major advance occurred in Europe around 1300 with the invention of the escapement, which allowed construction of the first mechanical clocks, which used oscillating timekeepers like balance wheels. Spring-driven clocks appeared during the 15th century. During the 15th and 16th centuries, clockmaking flourished. The next development in accuracy occurred after 1656 with the invention of the pendulum clock. A major stimulus to improving the accuracy and reliability of clocks was the importance of precise time-keeping for navigation. The electric clock was patented in 1840. The development of electronics in the 20th century led to clocks with no clockwork parts at all.

Clock (restaurant)

Clock was a Swedish hamburger restaurant chain originally founded by an offshoot from the US-based Carrols. The chain suffered from mismanagement and declared bankruptcy; as the government had acquired the forfeited company, it was incorporated into the state-owned restaurant chain SARA.

As Carrols, Clock used the McDonald's concept with names for hamburgers such as 'Big Clock' ('Big Mac'). Using a huge clock as its logo, the chain grew to be very successful and widespread during the 1970s and 1980s, even branching out to China, but got into economic problems in the 1990s and started closing or selling restaurants. In 1996 Clock actually sold six restaurants (four in Stockholm and two in Gothenburg) to McDonald's. The same year, as part of what turned out to be a new business strategy, the company bought the hotel and restaurant company Provobis, which had the same main owner, Rolf Lundström, who thereby consolidated his holdings. It also attempted to reduce its own ownership in restaurants and increase the number of franchise restaurants, but by 1998 only 14 Clock restaurants remained, of which six were sold the same year and the remaining eight at the beginning of 1999. The company took the name Provobis, and was in 2000 bought by the large Scandic Hotels corporation.

Clock (dance act)

Clock was an English band primarily led by Stu Allan and Pete Pritchard. They started as a techno English "2 Unlimited" when they recruited rapper Marcus Thomas (using the name ODC MC), and vocalist Lorna Saunders (using the name Tinka) to front the act. Thomas left in 1998 to join the band Tzant, to be replaced by Ché-gun Peters.

They had a string of Top 40 hits with nine covers throughout the 1990s on the UK Singles Chart. They also released hardcore versions of their hits under the name Visa. Clock broke up in 1999 due to a number of personal reasons; they weren't able to continue at the same pace as they had before.

In 2004, Saunders appeared on BBC Television's Never Mind The Buzzcocks in the celebrity line-up. It was announced that she was now working as a legal secretary. In 2015, it was revealed that Lorna Saunders works as a lawyer for Jackamans and is married with two kids.

Eleven (Tina Arena album)

Eleven is the eleventh studio album (9 in English, 2 in French) released by Australian singer and songwriter Tina Arena. The album was released in Australia on 30 October 2015. The first single, "I Want to Love You" was released on 4 September 2015. Arena described Eleven as a "personal album" that was "joyous to make". Arena hinted at a tour, saying "I'm looking forward to playing the songs for you live soon". This was further confirmed in a radio interview on 3AW on 1 September when Arena stated she would be on the road February–March 2016.

Background

Following on from her 2013 platinum selling release Reset and tour, Arena announced the release of her new album in August 2015.

In an interview on Today with Richard Wilkins on 2 September 2015, Arena confirmed the album was recorded in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Stockholm and Paris. The album is described as a beautiful, complex, state-of-the-art collection of emotive, electronica-based songs. The album became available for pre-order on 4 September 2015. The digital version came with two instant download tracks; "Overload" and "I Want to Love You".
