Tangshan

Tangshan (Chinese: 唐山; pinyin: Tángshān) is a largely industrial prefecture-level city in northeastern Hebei province, China. It has become known for the 1976 Tangshan earthquake which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and killed at least 255,000 residents. The city has since been rebuilt and has become a tourist attraction.

The city of Tangshan is approximately 149 kilometers, 92 miles or 80 nautical miles east by south east of the country's capital city of Beijing. It takes roughly 2 hours by road to get from Tangshan to Beijing.

Tangshan's prefecture population was 7,577,289 at the 2010 census, with 3,187,171 in the built-up (or metro) area made of the 6 urban core districts.

Etymology

Tangshan is named after Dacheng Mountain (which is also named Mountain Tang[Tangshan in Chinese]) in the middle of Tangshan city.

In A.D. 645, Li Shimin-emperor of Tang Dynasty and his army stationed at Dacheng Mountain on his way back from Korean Peninsula. Unfortunately, Caofei, his beloved concubine, died here. In order to commemorate his Caofei, he named the mountain with the name of the state—Tang. Later, the name of the mountain became the name of the city.

I was invited to return to Tangshan, China in July 2006 for an exhibition of photos I took of the city in March-April 1972. In July 1976, Tangshan was hit be a devastating earthquake that leveled the city and killed at least 240,000 people. My photos were perhaps the only surviving color images of "daily life" in Tangshan in the years just before the earthquake. In 1972, China was still in the midst of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao Zedong's ideological crusade to purge the country of all counterrevolutionary and "bourgeois" elements and to keep the People's Republic on the path to his radical vision of socialism and communism. In that way, too, my photos capture a time long past in China's modern history. The posted videos are from a film made for showing on China...

Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency. 1. Danke Shoen

    Danke Shoen, Darling, Danke Shoen
Thank you for all the joy and pain
    Picture shows
Second balcony was the place we'd meet
Second seat, Gold Dutch treat, you were sweet
    Danke Shoen, darling, Danke Shoen
Save those lies, darling, dont explain
I recall central park in fall
How you tore your dress, what a mess
    I confess thats not all
    Danke Shoen, darling, Danke Shoen
Thank you for walks down lover's lane
I can see hearts carved on a tree
Letters intertwine for all time, yours and mine that was fine
    Danke Shoen, darling, Danke Shoen
Thank you for seeing me again
Though we go on our seperate way
Still the memory stays for always
    My heart says Danke Shoen
Danke Shoen, oh darling, Danke Shoen
I said thank you for mmm, seeing me again
Though we go on our seperate ways
Still the memory stays for always
    my heart says Danke Shoen
    Danke Shoen
    I'll be the same
    Danke Shoen
