An ICIMOD-Nepal Day workshop was organised on 5 March, the first day of a two-day event, to share the results of ICIMODs work in Nepal with partners and the development community. Participants were mainly from government ministries and departments, universities, and development and non-government organisations.
ICIMODs Nepalese partners highlighted the activities and achievements of six ongoing joint programmes. The first presentation focused on the increased income achieved by communities in remote hill districts of Nepal from high value niche products such as medicinal plants and beekeeping using a value chain approach. The second described a key pilot study undertaken in Nepal by ICIMOD, FECOFUN and ANSAB on reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Glacial melting and glacial lakes, and work with the concerned government department and Tribhuvan University, was the subject of the third talk: the inventory of potentially dangerous lakes in Nepal has been refined, with six lakes identified as high priority for investigation, enablin, a more reliable communication of risk to the vulnerable communities. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation discussed ICIMOD supported work on participatory and cross-boundary landscape conservation, including regional protected area conservation corridors as in the Sacred Himalayan Landscape (SHL), and the setting up of the regional High Altitude Wetlands Initiative. Range and pasture lands are of critical importance, and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) of the Ministry of Agriculture, described ICIMODs contribution to the development of Nepals Rangeland Policy, which will soon be implemented. Finally, a major partnership success with IFAD was highlighted by a representative of IFADs Western Upland Poverty Alleviation Project (WUPAP), who described the contributions of ICIMOD to this 11-year project which focuses on technology transfer and market-based livelihood improvement in Nepals 16 western districts and has achieved significant income enhancement with environmental conservation. Adaptation in the Mountains: Issues and Gaps Beyond Boundaries - APYF2014

The Asia Pacific Youth Forum and Training Workshop 2014 was organized in Kathmandu by ICIMOD through its Asia Pacific Mountain Network; APMN - http://www.icimod.org/apmn, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network; APAN - http://www.apan-gan.net/. The event was made possible through generous support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; SDC under its Sustainable Mountain Development for Global Collaboration; SMD4GC. Initiated in 2010, ICIMOD’s youth forums bring youth from mountainous countries together to discuss policy needs and, thus, influence the Mountain Agenda at the global level.
During the four-day event, 47 participants from the Asia Pacific region interacted with high-level bureaucrats, youth leaders, researchers, thought process leaders, and tech innovators from the region. They discussed climate change from multiple perspectives, relating it to government policy, civil society, and international instruments such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; UNFCCC. They gained first-hand knowledge about ICIMOD’s current research on climate change adaptation and observed green technologies housed at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godavari. In addition, they visited the nearby Kavre District to observe local adaptation measures for water conservation in the middle hills, where ICIMOD is conducting action research in collaboration with the Nepal Water Conservation Foundation; NWCF under its Koshi Basin Programme.

Sudip Pradhan talks about ICIMOD's efforts for forest fire detection and monitoring as a part of Nepal's climate change adaptation efforts.
Sudip Pradhan, leader of the project at ICIMOD, told Thomson Reuters Foundation that the system now sends forest fire alerts via SMS and email to 200 subscribers, who include district forest officials and local members of the Federation of Community Forest Users' Group Nepal.
"In view of the country's large area, satellite data have proved highly useful for near real-time fire detection, monitoring and assessment of burnt areas," he said.
The system, planted on the roof of ICIMOD headquarters, receives images directly from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. These are processed by ICIMOD, and if fires are detected, alerts are sent out to subscribers in just 15 to 20 minutes to help them respond quickly, Pradhan explained.

Spread over more than 70 acres of land, the park was established in 1993. The park demonstrates eco-friendly technologies, approaches and practices that will help enhance livelihood of mountain farmers.

We know very little about glaciers in the high mountains. We know they’re shrinking and temperatures are rising faster at higher altitudes than anywhere else on the planet. But, due to extreme conditions and inaccessibility, we have much to learn. Detailed field measurements are being made on just twelve out of some 54,000 glaciers in the Himalayas. More measurements are needed because these glaciers feed the rivers people living down below rely on.

ICIMOD supported the Himalayan Women Welfare Society for the K2 Expedition called "Women Climbing for Climate Change". This expedition to the K2 was undertaken by a team of three young women climbers from Nepal, dedicated to "demonstrate the strength of women and the potential for positive change." The goal of the expedition is to become the first Nepali female team to summit Mount K2 in order to raise awareness on climate change and also to raise the fund for mountain environment. Pledging the support to this expedition, ICIMOD symbolizes its commitment to integrate women in climate change research and adaptation and sustainable development in the Himalayas as well as to the work on issues of gender equity and gender transformative change. The three women team set out to the mission to climb Mount K2 from mid-June to end-August 2014, starting from Kathmandu. Upon reaching to the target, the team placed an ICIMOD banner in the summit. During the expedition, the team will also documented/recorded some materials on mountain women and climate change for ICIMOD use. And on their return the women climbers delivered a seminar at ICIMOD to share the team findings and experiences. Following the K2 Expedition the three women have initiated shorter treks to raise awareness of climate change and women’s role in the mountains among local communities.

The main objective of this study was to develop a vulnerability index at district level in Nepal by combining biophysical and social data. In general, vulnerability is expressed as a function of the exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity of a region to climate change effects, especially natural disasters. For this project, the vulnerability index incorporated not only the frequency and intensity of hazard events such as floods, drought conditions, and natural disasters, but also the gradual changes in mean temperature and precipitation over a decadal span carried out from 1975 to 2012. The future vulnerability was predicted for 2020. NASA climate and land cover datasets were used to advance the climate change portion of the vulnerability assessment. Specifically, changes in temperature and precipitation were measured using monthly NASA's
Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 datasets, respectively. Gridded precipitation gauge data by Willmott and Matsuura was used to measure temperature and precipitation prior to 2000. The satellite data were compared with the weather station data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology in Nepal. The socioeconomic data were obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Nepal, and ICIMOD to measure the social vulnerability of the populations. Historical records of climatic disaster events were acquired from DesInventar (Disaster Information System) to measure exposure to climatic disasters. Landcover maps obtained from Landsat 7 were used to identify high-density urban areas prone to the urban heat island effect, and areas prone to landslides. Mapping vulnerability patterns across space and time helps to identify socially and biophysically vulnerable areas and assists with climate change adaptation strategies in areas of projected vulnerability.

An ICIMOD delegation comprising Director General Dr David Molden, Director of Strategic Cooperation Basanta Raj Shrestha, and Head of Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Farid Ahmad visited Pakistan from 18-19 April 2016 to hold strategic meetings with national partners. Country representative of ICIMOD-Pakistan Dr Abdul Wahid Jasra joined the team to make a presentation before senior members of the Pakistan government, including Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, State Minister and Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Marvi Memon and top government officials. During the presentation, Dr Molden explained that ICIMOD is a regional organization that provides technical assistance and knowledge on climate issues to its eight member countries in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region including Pakistan. He also highlighted ICIMOD’s aim “to assist mountain people to understand the challenge of climate change, local adaptation strategies and new possible income generation opportunities while addressing upstream-downstream linkages.”
Finance Minister Mr Ishaq Dar said that the government would accord due importance to environmental protection and that Pakistan would contribute to global debate on climate change. He expressed appreciation for ICIMOD’s efforts and asked the organization to co-ordinate with concerned ministries to implement its R&D; programme in Pakistan. The meeting was also attended by the United Nations Resident Coordinator Neil Buhne, who applauded ICIMOD’s role in generating knowledge of mountains in the HKH region.

The main objective of this study was to develop a vulnerability index at district level in Nepal by combining biophysical and social data. In general, vulnerability is expressed as a function of the exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity of a region to climate change effects, especially natural disasters. For this project, the vulnerability index incorporated not only the frequency and intensity of hazard events such as floods, drought conditions, and natural disasters, but also the gradual changes in mean temperature and precipitation over a decadal span carried out from 1975 to 2012. An ICIMOD-Nepal Day workshop was organised on 5 March, the first day of a two-day event, to share the results of ICIMODs work in Nepal with partners and the development community. Participants were mainly from government ministries and departments, universities, and development and non-government organisations.
ICIMODs Nepalese partners highlighted the activities and achievements of six ongoing joint programmes. The first presentation focused on the increased income achieved by communities in remote hill districts of Nepal from high value niche products such as medicinal plants and beekeeping using a value chain approach. The second described a key pilot study undertaken in Nepal by ICIMOD, FECOFUN and ANSAB on reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Glacial melting and glacial lakes, and work with the concerned government department and Tribhuvan University, was the subject of the third talk: the inventory of potentially dangerous lakes in Nepal has been refined, with six lakes identified as high priority for investigation, enablin, a more reliable communication of risk to the vulnerable communities. The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation discussed ICIMOD supported work on participatory and cross-boundary landscape conservation, including regional protected area conservation corridors as in the Sacred Himalayan Landscape (SHL), and the setting up of the regional High Altitude Wetlands Initiative. Range and pasture lands are of critical importance, and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) of the Ministry of Agriculture, described ICIMODs contribution to the development of Nepals Rangeland Policy, which will soon be implemented. Finally, a major partnership success with IFAD was highlighted by a representative of IFADs Western Upland Poverty Alleviation Project (WUPAP), who described the contributions of ICIMOD to this 11-year project which focuses on technology transfer and market-based livelihood improvement in Nepals 16 western districts and has achieved significant income enhancement with environmental conservation. The Asia Pacific Youth Forum and Training Workshop 2014 was organized in Kathmandu by ICIMOD through its Asia Pacific Mountain Network; APMN - http://www.icimod.org/apmn, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network; APAN - http://www.apan-gan.net/. The event was made possible through generous support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; SDC under its Sustainable Mountain Development for Global Collaboration; SMD4GC. Initiated in 2010, ICIMOD’s youth forums bring youth from mountainous countries together to discuss policy needs and, thus, influence the Mountain Agenda at the global level.
During the four-day event, 47 participants from the Asia Pacific region interacted with high-level bureaucrats, youth leaders, researchers, thought process leaders, and tech innovators from the region. They discussed climate change from multiple perspectives, relating it to government policy, civil society, and international instruments such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; UNFCCC. They gained first-hand knowledge about ICIMOD’s current research on climate change adaptation and observed green technologies housed at the ICIMOD Knowledge Park at Godavari. In addition, they visited the nearby Kavre District to observe local adaptation measures for water conservation in the middle hills, where ICIMOD is conducting action research in collaboration with the Nepal Water Conservation Foundation; NWCF under its Koshi Basin Programme.

Sudip Pradhan talks about ICIMOD's efforts for forest fire detection and monitoring as a part of Nepal's climate change adaptation efforts.
Sudip Pradhan, leader of the project at ICIMOD, told Thomson Reuters Foundation that the system now sends forest fire alerts via SMS and email to 200 subscribers, who include district forest officials and local members of the Federation of Community Forest Users' Group Nepal.
"In view of the country's large area, satellite data have proved highly useful for near real-time fire detection, monitoring and assessment of burnt areas," he said.
The system, planted on the roof of ICIMOD headquarters, receives images directly from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. These are processed by ICIMOD, and if fires are detected, alerts are sent out to subscribers in just 15 to 20 minutes to help them respond quickly, Pradhan explained.

The socioeconomic data were obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Nepal, and ICIMOD to measure the social vulnerability of the populations. Historical records of climatic disaster events were acquired from DesInventar (Disaster Information System) to measure exposure to climatic disasters. Landcover maps obtained from Landsat 7 were used to identify high-density urban areas prone to the urban heat island effect, and areas prone to landslides. Mapping vulnerability patterns across space and time helps to identify socially and biophysically vulnerable areas and assists with climate change adaptation strategies in areas of projected vulnerability.

The meeting was also attended by the United Nations Resident Coordinator Neil Buhne, who applauded ICIMOD’s role in generating knowledge of mountains in the HKH region.

An ICIMOD delegation comprising Director General Dr David Molden, Director of Strategic Cooperation Basanta Raj Shrestha, and Head of Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Farid Ahmad visited Pakistan from 18-19 April 2016 to hold strategic meetings with national partners. Country representative of ICIMOD-Pakistan Dr Abdul Wahid Jasra joined the team to make a presentation before senior members of the Pakistan government, including Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, State Minister and Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Marvi Memon and top government officials. During the presentation, Dr Molden explained that ICIMOD is a regional organization that provides technical assistance and knowledge on climate issues to its eight member countries in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region including Pakistan.
