An intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is a guided ballistic missile with a minimum range of 5,500 kilometres (3,400 mi) primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery (delivering one or more thermonuclear warheads). Similarly conventional, chemical and biological weapons can also be delivered with varying effectiveness, but have never been deployed on ICBMs. Most modern designs support multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), allowing a single missile to carry several warheads, each of which can strike a different target.
Early ICBMs had limited accuracy (circular error probable) that allowed them to be used only against the largest targets such as cities. They were seen as a "safe" basing option, one that would keep the deterrent force close to home where it would be difficult to attack. Attacks against (especially hardened) military targets, if desired, still demanded the use of a more precise manned bomber. This is due to the inverse-square law, which predicts that the amount of energy dispersed from a single point release of energy (such as a thermonuclear blast) dissipates by the inverse of the square of distance from the single point of release. The result is that the power of a nuclear explosion to rupture hardened structures is greatly decreased by the distance from the impact point of the nuclear weapon. So a near-direct hit is generally necessary, as only diminishing returns are gained by increasing bomb yield.

Original UK broadcast, 25th May 2000. Meet the American men and women with their fingers on the button. For over 30 years, US Air Force missileers have sat in remote control centres ready to launch the unimaginably destructive power of Minuteman intercontinental nuclear missiles from silos buried beneath the middle-western prairie. In a documentary that cannot help evoking the madness of Dr Strangelove, we follow Lt Rene Hernandez as he trains for a role dislocated from reality. Rene opted for the job - ironically, to give him more time with his family - but it certainly isn't an easy option as the missileers are required to perform faultlessly. Leslie Woodhead's film is coolly dispassionate, contrasting modem-day reality with the spirit of the frontier. It is a thought-provoking film t...

The LGM-30 Minuteman is a U.S. land-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), in service with the Air Force Global Strike Command. As of 2014, the LGM-30G Minuteman III version is the only land-based ICBM in service in the United States.
This machine video explains the design of the LGM-118A Peacekeeper also known as the "MX", which was land-based deployed by the United States in 1986. It could carry up to 10 re-entry vehicles, all guided, each armed with a 300kt reentry vehicle (RV). A total of 50 were in service starting in 1986. The United States started an engineering requirement development process combining the previous design rocket concepts into a single platform to the MX. The specifications for the MX were fixed in February 1972, and the advanced development program started in late 1973. At the time, MX was to be based in existing Minuteman silos, in keeping with the original ICBM-X concept of MX as essentially a bigger design. TELEPORTERS!
Meatwagon come, borne on the rays of the morning sun
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
A silver express through the valley of death
A cruise over land, to turn the fertile soil to sand
Ten million bodies, maybe more
From every wound a stream of blood doth pour
We must find a way to stop the flood
