Yamuna
The Yamuna (/jəmʊnaː/; Sanskrit and Hindi: यमुना), sometimes called Jamuna (Hindi: जमुना; /d͡ʒəmʊna:/) is the longest and the second largest tributary river of the Ganges (Ganga) in northern India. Originating from the Yamunotri Glacier at a height of 6,387 metres on the south western slopes of Banderpooch peaks in the uppermost region of the Lower Himalayas in Uttarakhand, it travels a total length of 1,376 kilometers (855 mi) and has a drainage system of 366,223 square kilometres (141,399 sq mi), 40.2% of the entire Ganges Basin, before merging with the Ganges at Triveni Sangam, Allahabad, the site for the Kumbha Mela every twelve years. It is the longest river in India which does not directly flow to the sea.
It crosses several states, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, passing by Uttarakhand and later Delhi, and meets its tributaries on the way, including Tons, its largest tributary in Uttarakhand, Chambal, its longest tributary which has its own large basin, followed by Sindh, the Betwa, and Ken. Most importantly it creates the highly fertile alluvial, Yamuna-Ganges Doab region between itself and the Ganges in the Indo-Gangetic plain. Nearly 57 million people depend on the Yamuna waters. With an annual flow of about 10,000 cubic billion metres (cbm) and usage of 4,400 cbm (of which irrigation constitutes 96 per cent), the river accounts for more than 70 per cent of Delhi’s water supplies. Just like the Ganges, the Yamuna too is highly venerated in Hinduism and worshipped as goddess Yamuna, throughout its course. In Hindu mythology, she is the daughter of Sun God, Surya, and sister of Yama, the God of Death, hence also known as Yami and according to popular legends, bathing in its sacred waters frees one from the torments of death.

Plot: Circa British Rule in India, a man vows to make his only surviving son, Narayan, alias Nani, a Brahmachari to atone for the deaths of five of his children. He takes this child to a remote village in Karnataka, South India, where he leaves his 11 year old son in the care of a learned Archarya, Udup Pandit. Here Nani gets to meet two other disciples of the Archarya, as well as his widowed daughter, Yamuna, and another male by the name of Shrikar Upadhyay, who also teaches the British how to read and write in Hindi. The Archarya goes away for a few days, and when he returns nothing is the same anymore. His daughter is pregnant, the villagers are all set to remove her from the village, they are also angry with him for refusing Yamuna to follow the traditional way a Hindu widow. The Archarya must now find out who impregnated his daughter - whether it was one of his two young disciples; an untouchable male named Koga Pandit, or was it young Nani. The Archarya must also decide what is to be done with Yamuna as it is up to him now to decide her fate, not that he has many choices - for the prescribed Hindu punishment for this is - death.

Yamuna Expressway opens, travel Delhi to Agra in 2 hrs - NewsX
The 165-km Yamuna expressway that connects Noida and Agra is being thrown open to the public. The expressway reduces the distance between the two places by at least 2 hours. The toll for the expressway is around 346 rupees for a passenger car. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated the expressway via video conference from Lucknow. The project has witnessed many delays since it was conceived during the Mayawati regime in 2001. Put on hold between 2003 and 2007, it was revived in 2007 and renamed Yamuna Expressway. However, the 11th century Persian poet Mas'ūd Sa'd Salmān writes of a desperate assault on the fortress of Agra, then held by the Shāhī King Jayapala, by Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. Sultan Sikandar Lodī was the first to move his capital from Delhi to Agra in 1506. He died in 1517 and his son, Ibrāhīm Lodī, remained in power there for nine more years, finally being defeated at the Battle of Panipat in 1526. Between 1540 and 1556, Afghans, beginning with Sher Shah Suri ruled the area. It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1658.

Red Fort
The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is one of Delhi's top tourist sights. A brilliant red sandstone fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built Agra's Taj Mahal) as his ruling palace. Completed in 1648, the years since have not treated the buildings kindly: the rooms have long since been stripped of all objects, the marble inlays are long gone and quite a few buildings are off limits. Still, the scale remains imposing and the gardens are kept lush and green even in midwinter. Major buildings within include:
Chatta Chowk, (Covered Bazaar). True to the name, this is a covered bazaar between the gate and the fort itself, now filled with souvenir hawkers.
Diwan-i-Am, (Hall of Public Audience). This building separates the outer court from the inner court, and has a marble platform for the emperor's throne.
Hayat Baksh Bagh, (Life-Bestowing Gardens). Once a grand garden of full of fountains and streams, now sadly all dry — only dry channels and acres of green grass remain.
Diwan-i-Khas, (Hall of Private Audience). Built completely of marble, this is where the emperor received special visitors.
Khas Mahal, (Private Palace), The Emperor's main residence. The octagonal Mussaman Burj tower looks out toward the Yamuna River, and is where the Emperor used to appear before the public for each morning.
Rang Mahal, (Colour Palace). The residence of the Sultan's main wife.
Mumtaz Mahal, (Jewel Palace). Contained six apartments for the Sultan's harem. Now used as a museum of court textiles, carpets, weapons, etc (free).
Daawat Khana, A minor palace at the northmost end of the Fort, this was originally the residence of a prince, but it was converted into a tea house by the British, a function it continues today. Basic meals go for around 60 rupees, drinks 10-20 rupees, and it also has the cleanest toilets around.
Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya, (Museum of the Independence Movement). To the left after the Chatta Chowk, this is a reasonably well-presented museum on the history of independence activism in India, starting from the Mutiny of 1857 all the way to Gandhi.
The only open entrance is Lahore Gate, on the west side. Security in and around the Fort is very heavy, as it was the scene of a terrorist attack in 2000 that killed three people. Humayun's Tomb in south Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin station, is one of Delhi's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, entry is Rs 10/250, Indians/foreigners.
Qutub Minar, The most famous structure on grounds, this 72.5 m minaret was the tallest "skyscraper" in the world when built (1193-1368) - it was constructed on the orders of Qutb-ud-din Aybak. Delicately carved, it has been astonishingly well-preserved and is still an awe-inspiring sight today. It's often visible from air when flying into IGI airport! (Sticklers for archaeological truth will, however, note that the top of the tower has twice been rebuilt after an earthquake, and the base has been restored more recently.) While entry into the tower itself is no longer permitted, for Rs 10 per 5 min you can view the scenery via a little webcam on top.
Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Delhi's first and grandest mosque, now mostly in ruins, but many parts of the complex are still standing and the sandstone decorations are still impressive. Check out the extraordinarily ornate carvings near the tomb of Iltutmish on the west side of the complex.

Red Fort
The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is one of Delhi's top tourist sights. A brilliant red sandstone fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built Agra's Taj Mahal) as his ruling palace. Completed in 1648, the years since have not treated the buildings kindly: the rooms have long since been stripped of all objects, the marble inlays are long gone and quite a few buildings are off limits. Still, the scale remains imposing and the gardens are kept lush and green even in midwinter. Major buildings within include:
Chatta Chowk, (Covered Bazaar). True to the name, this is a covered bazaar between the gate and the fort itself, now filled with souvenir hawkers.
Diwan-i-Am, (Hall of Public Audience). This building separates the outer court from the inner court, and has a marble platform for the emperor's throne.
Hayat Baksh Bagh, (Life-Bestowing Gardens). Once a grand garden of full of fountains and streams, now sadly all dry — only dry channels and acres of green grass remain.
Diwan-i-Khas, (Hall of Private Audience). Built completely of marble, this is where the emperor received special visitors.
Khas Mahal, (Private Palace), The Emperor's main residence. The octagonal Mussaman Burj tower looks out toward the Yamuna River, and is where the Emperor used to appear before the public for each morning.
Rang Mahal, (Colour Palace). The residence of the Sultan's main wife.
Mumtaz Mahal, (Jewel Palace). Contained six apartments for the Sultan's harem. Now used as a museum of court textiles, carpets, weapons, etc (free).
Daawat Khana, A minor palace at the northmost end of the Fort, this was originally the residence of a prince, but it was converted into a tea house by the British, a function it continues today. Basic meals go for around 60 rupees, drinks 10-20 rupees, and it also has the cleanest toilets around.
Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya, (Museum of the Independence Movement). To the left after the Chatta Chowk, this is a reasonably well-presented museum on the history of independence activism in India, starting from the Mutiny of 1857 all the way to Gandhi.
The only open entrance is Lahore Gate, on the west side. Security in and around the Fort is very heavy, as it was the scene of a terrorist attack in 2000 that killed three people. As far as Wild Frontiers is concerned Calcutta and the Northeast is a region that comprises pretty much anything east of Delhi, running along the Ganges flood plain to Calcutta and beyond to the borders of Bangladesh, Burma and Bhutan.
If most travellers coming to India head west out of Delhi to Rajasthan, most that don't head east down the Ganges to Varanasi.
Most of these travel by air or rail directly to Varanasi but if you are of an adventurous disposition there are many interesting places to stop off at along the route, such as Rishikesh -- where the Beatles stayed and wrote the famous White Album -- or Lucknow, a beautiful city packed with fabulous Moghul architecture. In fact if you're looking for a group tour you might like to try our Slow Down the Ganges trip, which, having spent some time in the Himalayas and at Corbett Tiger Park, takes a boat from Allahabad, spending two days and nights, on this spiritual aqua highway.
Whatever your preferred form of transport is to Varanasi, even the most seasons travellers among you are in for a shock when you get there.
Varanasi sits at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Sara Swati Rivers and as such is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the whole country. Over 60,000 devotees a day come here to cleanse themselves in the rivers holy waters. Others come here to die believing death in Varanasi removes you from the cycle of rebirth and delivers you to heaven and the burning ghats, and the religious festivals that go on here, day and night, are an ever present accompaniment.
From Varanasi you can continue east to Calcutta -- personally my favourite city in India. Largely off the beaten track, Calcutta -- or Kolkata, as its now known locally -- is a quintessential Indian city; a place of bustling bazaars and markets, of epic historical monuments, amazing decaying architecture, great cuisine and above all a buzzing humanity.
And from here head north. First and foremost to the famous tea plantations of Darjeeling -- where you'll find an interesting town, some great accommodation, and wonderful views, particularly of the 8,000m epic mountain Kanchenjunga. And from here, you can continue east, perhaps on one of the famous river boats up the Brahmaputra River, to Nagaland and a very different India.

With this 28 type of precious and semi-precious stones were embedded in the interiors of the monument which adds extravaganza to this grand structure.
The design of Taj Mahal is basically a Persian style embedded with an Indian architectural pattern. The Taj Complex is divided into four distinctive parts and each has its own significance and characteristics. The Taj Gateway facing the Taj Mahal is the massive red sandstone Gateway. It is decorated with verses from the holy Koran. While the Taj Garden provides a breathtaking view of lush-green flora going all the way up to the plinth of the Taj. This garden illustrates the Islamic style of architecture and symbolizes spirituality.
The Mausoleum is the mighty structure of the Taj placed on a 6.7 meter high plinth. Four minarets each of 41.6 meters height flanked by the four corners of the plinth and balance the tomb. These minarets are so spectacularly designed that in case of any mishappening, the pillars would not fall on the tomb. Each minaret has an Arabic letter written and famous for their calligraphic representations.
Tombs in Taj Mahal are set on a square pedestal. The base structure in the tomb is large and has many chambers. Of the various chambers, the main chamber has the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. The steles of the tomb are decorated with precious and semi-precious stones and the ceilings are strategically constructed to echo voices and melodies.
