Airbus SAS (/ˈɛərbʌs/, French: [ɛʁbys], German: [ˈɛːɐbʊs], Spanish: [ˈerβus]) is a division of Airbus Group SE that manufactures civil aircraft. It is based in Blagnac, France, a suburb of Toulouse, with production and manufacturing facilities mainly in France, Germany, Spain, China and the United Kingdom.
Airbus began as a consortium of aerospace manufacturers, Airbus Industrie. Consolidation of European defence and aerospace companies in 1999 and 2000 allowed the establishment of a simplified joint-stock company in 2001, owned by the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) (80%) and BAE Systems (20%). After a protracted sales process BAE sold its shareholding to EADS on 13 October 2006.
Airbus employs around 63,000 people at sixteen sites in four countries: France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Final assembly production is based at Toulouse, France; Hamburg, Germany; Seville, Spain; and, since 2009 as a joint-venture, Tianjin, China. Airbus has subsidiaries in the United States, Japan and India.

Airbus’ “family flight” brought together its market-leading commercial product line of single-aisle and widebody jetliners. In the skies together was the most modern and comprehensive aircraft family on the market: the best-selling A320neo (new engine option); the popular and versatile widebody A330; the new-generation A350 XWB; and the double-deck A380. It’s a family built on shared values of efficiency, quality, innovation and commonality.
Airbus makes the freedom of flight possible by designing, manufacturing and supporting the world’s best aircraft. Watch as the company’s jetliner product line evolves over the years with this compilation of formation flights from 1988 to today.

Most major aircraft manufacturing companies have been founded by flying enthusiasts who combined the properties of an innovator, engineer, and entrepreneur. This was the case with Boeing, Douglas, De Havilland, and Fokker. But not so with Airbus, which was started by pan-European political-economic interests to counteract the U.S. dominance of the airline industry. Today, the company with its main plant in Toulouse, France, competes with mighty Boeing for the world dominance.

The first Boeing 747 entered service in February 1971. A total of 2000 planes have been built within the past 45 years. The first Airbus A380 was delivered in 2007 to Singapore Airlines. Until today 187 planes have been bulit and Airbus is currently thinking about producing an Airbus A380neo which will be more fuel efficient.
