Denton Arthur Cooley, regarded at one time as one of the world's top heart surgeons and the first to implant a mechanical heart, died Friday (Nov ... He was 96, according to the Houston Chronicle ... Cooley performed an estimated 65,000 open-heart surgeries at the Texas Heart Institute that he founded, drawing patients from around the globe, the newspaper reported ...
