Szymon Goldberg (1 June 1909 – 19 July 1993) was a Polish-born classical violinist and conductor, latterly an American.
Born in Włocławek, Congress Poland, Goldberg played the violin as a child growing up in Warsaw. His first teacher was Henryk Czaplinski, a pupil of the great Czech violinist Otakar Ševčík; his second was Mieczysław Michałowicz, a pupil of Leopold Auer. In 1917, at age eight, Goldberg moved to Berlin to study the violin with the legendary pedagogue Carl Flesch.
After a recital in Warsaw in 1921, and a debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1924 in which he played three concertos, he was engaged as concert-master of the Dresden Philharmonic from 1925 to 1929. In 1929 he was offered the position of concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic by its Principal Conductor, Wilhelm Furtwängler. He accepted the position, serving from 1930 to 1934. During these years, he also performed in a string trio with Paul Hindemith on viola and Emanuel Feuermann on cello, and also led a string quartet of Berlin Philharmonic members.
Handel's "Violin Sonata in D Major", op. 1, no. 13, performed by violinist Szymon Goldberg with pianist Gerald Moore. Parlophone, 1947. Review from Gramophone magazine: "This is a beautifully played, very well balanced and recorded performance of the D major sonata, in which both artists give the maximum of musical pleasure throughout. I do not recall any other recording which has brought out so admirably the pathos implicit in the third movement or in which the slow crescendo in this movement was so finely graded. I wish these two artists would record the rest of the six sonatas and then give us the Bach sonatas. This glorious music is a never failing tonic and one can't have too much of it." Goldberg was not an immaculate player technically, but he was a wonderful stylist and there is a movingly spiritual, heartfelt quality in his interpretations. He had the gift of communicating very strongly to the listener and a rare ability to create the feeling of a live performance under studio conditions. He chooses tempos which allow the music to breathe easily in his hands and the slow movements have a particular elegance and rapt concentration. I Susskind and the Philharmonia provide watchful, highly sympathetic accompaniments. The sound is warm and vivid for its date. Tempo di Menuetto 12:15 Szymon Goldberg (1909-1993), violin Lili Kraus (1903-1986), piano Rec. 1935 The Kraus-Goldberg duo made their debut in 1934. The London Times, in a review in 1935, described their partnership as "one of mutual understanding, and the confidence -- and indeed the brilliance -- of the playing a source of contentment." They and their families spent some traumatic war years in the Dutch Indies (1942-1945), where they were forced to stay in Japanese prison camps. Though it didn't stop Goldberg from marrying a much younger Japanese pianist later in life, and Kraus later claimed that: "These were the most priviliged experiences God ever gave me. The significance of spiritual life sh...

Nick speaks about his mentor Szymon Goldberg and Stratis speaks his mentor Claudio Spies. In both cases the work of these teachers brought alive the idea for Nick and for Stratis that close investigation of the manuscripts of a composer can provide powerful insights into the creative process. The Borromeo Quartet uses computers in order to always work from the full score, so that all the players always see every player's part, not just what they themselves play. With printed scores this has been a truly inspiring transformation of the rehearsal and performance process, but what was not expected is that this technique, where the music is read from a pdf file and pages are turned with a home-made foot-pedal, has opened the door to working directly from files of composer's manuscripts.
