MIFF Travelling Showcase
The Melbourne International Film Festival is thrilled to once again be presenting the MIFF Travelling Showcase, hitting the road throughout Victoria in September and October 2016 with a series of weekend programs. Screening the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported films The Family (pictured), Ella and The Death and Life of Otto Bloom, as well as the international family film Long Way North, the MIFF Travelling Showcase, heads next to Mildura, Belgrave, Mansfield and Bairnsdale.
October MIFF Members' Screening
Our second MIFF Members' Screening for September is Sand Storm thanks to our friends at The Jewish International Film Festival.
It is high noon in a desert village in Southern Israel. Jalila is hosting an awkward celebration, the marriage of her husband to a second, much younger wife, while her daughter Layla frets about her recently unveiled and strictly forbidden love affair.
A story of tradition, modernity, and divided family, Elite Zexer’s mesmerising debut feature portrays the layered relationship between mother and daughter, both bound by custom while struggling to adapt to a changing world. Zexer’s artful storytelling derives its authenticity—its complexity of character, rich detail, and subtle humour—from the 10 years she’s spent interacting with Bedouin women. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinematic Dramatic section at Sundance and winner of Best Film and Best Director at the Ophir Awards, Sand Storm screens at the 2016 Jewish International Film Festival.
