William Lindsey "Bill" Erwin (December 2, 1914 – December 29, 2010) was an American actor and cartoonist with over 250 television and film credits. A veteran character actor, he was widely known for his role as Sid Fields, an embittered, irascible man on Seinfeld. For this, he received an Emmy nomination. He was also known for his appearances on shows such as I Love Lucy and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Erwin was a self-taught cartoonist, published in The New Yorker, Playboy, and Los Angeles. He won a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, four Drama-Logue Awards, Gilmore Brown Award for Career Achievement, Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters' Diamond Circle Award, and Distinguished Alumnus Award from Angelo State University.
Erwin was born in Honey Grove, Texas. He had a sister named Mary Gene Cosper. He attended San Angelo College before earning his bachelor's degree in journalism at the University of Texas, graduating in 1935. He completed a masters of theater arts at California's Pasadena Playhouse in 1941. After serving as a Captain in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II, Erwin returned to Hollywood to resume his acting career. His first film role was in the 1942 film You're in the Army Now.
Since Bill Erwin past, he's been getting pegged and remembered as "The Old Man" from Seinfeld. Personally, I remember him best from the roles he played in a few John Hughes films: Dennis the Menace, Home Alone and Planes Trains and Automobiles. This old guy brings back a lot of memories from my childhood which is pretty special considering the generation gap between him and I. I bet he never anticipated he would touch the lives of a younger generations up until the end of his acting days. And I never anticipated that when I was 4 this guy would be alive 20 more years giving me fond memories of the golden days of my youth. Enjoy. http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/video/69501
