Travel Japan: Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan) is with 3776 meters Japan's highest mountain. It is not surprising that the nearly perfectly shaped volcano has been worshiped as a sacred mountain and experienced big popularity among artists and common people throughout the centuries.
Mount Fuji is an active volcano, which most recently erupted in 1708. It stands on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and can be seen from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.
Another easy way to view Mount Fuji is from the train on a trip between Tokyo and Osaka. If you take the shinkansen from Tokyo in direction of Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, the best view of the mountain can be enjoyed from around Shin-Fuji Station on the right hand side of the train, about 40-45 minutes into the journey.
Note however, that clouds and poor visibility often block the view of Mount Fuji, and you have to consider yourself lucky if you get a clear view of the mountain. Visibility tends to be better during the colder seasons of the year than in summer, and in the early morning and late evening hours than during the middle of the day.
If you want to enjoy Mount Fuji at a more leisurely pace and from a nice natural surrounding, you should head to the Fuji Five Lake (Fujigoko) region at the northern foot of the mountain, or to Hakone, a nearby hot spring resort. Mount Fuji is officially open for climbing during July and August via several routes.
Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan. The mountain contributes to Japan's physical, cultural, and spiritual geography.
Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776 meters (12,380 feet). It is an active volcano, sitting on a "triple junction" of tectonic activity: the Amurian plate (associated with the Eurasian tectonic plate), the Okhotsk plate (associated with the North American plate) and the Filipino plate all converge in the region beneath Mount Fuji. It is only 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Tokyo, Japan's capital and largest city. In fact, the last time Mount Fuji erupted, in 1707, volcanic ash fell on Tokyo.
Mount Fuji is the single most popular tourist site in Japan, for both Japanese and foreign tourists. More than 200,000 people climb to the summit every year, mostly during the warmer summer months. "Huts" on the route up the mountain cater to climbers, providing refreshments, basic medical supplies, and room to rest. Many people start climbing Mount Fuji at night, as better to experience sunrise from the summit—Japan, after all, is nicknamed "the Land of the Rising Sun." The sunrise from Mount Fuji has a special name, Goraiko.
Mount Fuji has been a sacred site for practicers of Shinto since at least the 7th century. Shinto is the indigenous faith or spirituality of Japan. many Shinto shrines dot the base and ascent of Mount Fuji. Shinto shrines honor kami, the supernatural deities of the Shinto faith. The kami of Mount Fuji is Princess Konohanasakuya, whose symbol is the cherry blossom. Konohanasakuya has an entire series of shrines, called Segen shrines. The main Segen shrines are at the base and summit of Mount Fuji, but there are more than 1,000 across all of Japan.

The Aokigahara Forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently.

Where do I even begin with this. I'm sorry yet not sorry I look like trash. We had to wake up super early (got about three hours of sleep) then headed to the metro to catch a bus to catch another bus to the 5th station of Mt Fuji. From there we hiked up halfway then realized climbing Mount Fuji is a scam to make you have to sleep in their cabins overnight because our bus left at 5pm. We ran down the mountain to not miss our bus and we almost did. Luckily Japanese people know how to cram into places so we made it on the bus. However our second bus got stuck in traffic on the way back into Tokyo and instead of a two hour drive, it was four. We got back and I was rickity rickity rickity wrecked son. My feet (as you saw) are not in good shape. If you ever want to hike Fuji, here are some tips.
Take one big water bottle. I took four and didn't need four. I needed one. Four was too much weight on lil me.
Take one jacket. The temperature fluctuates pretty rapidly. The top may need more layers (which I was prepared for) but I didn't make it to the top.
Stay overnight if you want to hike the whole thing.
For the love of God, TAKE YOUR TIME. Skyler wanted to rush up it and I tried to stick to his pace. He is very athletic and 6 foot. I am not athletic and 5'5". I had to stop a lot because the air was thin and I couldn't catch my breath. It's also humid af so you're going to sweat. A lot.
Last but not least, enjoy the view. It's so beautiful.

Mt. Fuji Japan - GoPro HD
We went to Mt. Fuji in Japan on Oct 4th, 2013. This is just after the off season, but the weather was great and it was safe to climb. There was barely anyone on the mountain with us. I think we saw 2 other people.
We started at the 5th station at 8:00 am and climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji. We took the Yoshida Trail. After the 8 station, the air gets thin and it is a lot harder to climb. It is an odd and awesome feeling.
Around the 6th station we found a snowboard. I thought it was a good idea to carry it to the top of Mt. Fuji and try to snowboard down. I failed miserably :)
We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal in Tokyo to Mt. Fuji 5th station. You can make bus reservations here:

If you take the shinkansen from Tokyo in direction of Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, the best view of the mountain can be enjoyed from around Shin-Fuji Station on the right hand side of the train, about 40-45 minutes into the journey. Note however, that clouds and poor visibility often block the view of Mount Fuji, and you have to consider yourself lucky if you get a clear view of the mountain. Visibility tends to be better during the colder seasons of the year than in summer, and in the early morning and late evening hours than during the middle of the day. If you want to enjoy Mount Fuji at a more leisurely pace and from a nice natural surrounding, you should head to the Fuji Five Lake (Fujigoko) region at the northern foot of the mountain, or to Hakone, a nearby hot spring resort. Where do I even begin with this. I'm sorry yet not sorry I look like trash. We had to wake up super early (got about three hours of sleep) then headed to the metro to catch a bus to catch another bus to the 5th station of Mt Fuji. From there we hiked up halfway then realized climbing Mount Fuji is a scam to make you have to sleep in their cabins overnight because our bus left at 5pm. We ran down the mountain to not miss our bus and we almost did. Luckily Japanese people know how to cram into places so we made it on the bus. However our second bus got stuck in traffic on the way back into Tokyo and instead of a two hour drive, it was four. We got back and I was rickity rickity rickity wrecked son. My feet (as you saw) are not in good shape. If you ever want to hike Fuji, here are some tips. Take one big water bottle. I took four and didn't need four. I needed one. Four was too much weight on lil me. Take one jacket. The temperature fluctuates pretty rapidly. The top may need more layers (which I was prepared for) but I didn't make it to the top. Stay overnight if you want to hike the whole thing. For the love of God, TAKE YOUR TIME. Skyler wanted to rush up it and I tried to stick to his pace. He is very athletic and 6 foot. I am not athletic and 5'5". I had to stop a lot because the air was thin and I couldn't catch my breath. It's also humid af so you're going to sweat. A lot. Last but not least, enjoy the view. Fuji in Japan on Oct 4th, 2013. This is just after the off season, but the weather was great and it was safe to climb. There was barely anyone on the mountain with us. I think we saw 2 other people. We started at the 5th station at 8:00 am and climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji. We took the Yoshida Trail. After the 8 station, the air gets thin and it is a lot harder to climb. It is an odd and awesome feeling. Around the 6th station we found a snowboard. I thought it was a good idea to carry it to the top of Mt. Fuji and try to snowboard down. I failed miserably :) We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal in Tokyo to Mt. Fuji 5th station. It is not surprising that the nearly perfectly shaped volcano has been worshiped as a sacred mountain and experienced big popularity among artists and common people throughout the centuries. Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan) is with 3776 meters Japan's highest mountain. It is not surprising that the nearly perfectly shaped volcano has been worshiped as a sacred mountain and experienced big popularity among artists and common people throughout the centuries.
Mount Fuji is an active volcano, which most recently erupted in 1708. It stands on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and can be seen from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.
Another easy way to view Mount Fuji is from the train on a trip between Tokyo and Osaka. If you take the shinkansen from Tokyo in direction of Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, the best view of the mountain can be enjoyed from around Shin-Fuji Station on the right hand side of the train, about 40-45 minutes into the journey.
Note however, that clouds and poor visibility often block the view of Mount Fuji, and you have to consider yourself lucky if you get a clear view of the mountain. Visibility tends to be better during the colder seasons of the year than in summer, and in the early morning and late evening hours than during the middle of the day.
If you want to enjoy Mount Fuji at a more leisurely pace and from a nice natural surrounding, you should head to the Fuji Five Lake (Fujigoko) region at the northern foot of the mountain, or to Hakone, a nearby hot spring resort. Mount Fuji is officially open for climbing during July and August via several routes.

After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently.

Where do I even begin with this. I'm sorry yet not sorry I look like trash. We had to wake up super early (got about three hours of sleep) then headed to the me...
Where do I even begin with this. I'm sorry yet not sorry I look like trash. We had to wake up super early (got about three hours of sleep) then headed to the metro to catch a bus to catch another bus to the 5th station of Mt Fuji. From there we hiked up halfway then realized climbing Mount Fuji is a scam to make you have to sleep in their cabins overnight because our bus left at 5pm. We ran down the mountain to not miss our bus and we almost did. Luckily Japanese people know how to cram into places so we made it on the bus. However our second bus got stuck in traffic on the way back into Tokyo and instead of a two hour drive, it was four. We got back and I was rickity rickity rickity wrecked son. My feet (as you saw) are not in good shape. If you ever want to hike Fuji, here are some tips.
Take one big water bottle. I took four and didn't need four. I needed one. Four was too much weight on lil me.
Take one jacket. The temperature fluctuates pretty rapidly. The top may need more layers (which I was prepared for) but I didn't make it to the top.
Stay overnight if you want to hike the whole thing.
For the love of God, TAKE YOUR TIME. Skyler wanted to rush up it and I tried to stick to his pace. He is very athletic and 6 foot. I am not athletic and 5'5". I had to stop a lot because the air was thin and I couldn't catch my breath. It's also humid af so you're going to sweat. A lot.
Last but not least, enjoy the view. It's so beautiful.

We went to Mt. Fuji in Japan on Oct 4th, 2013. This is just after the off season, but the weather was great and it was safe to climb. There was barely anyone on the mountain with us. I think we saw 2 other people.
We started at the 5th station at 8:00 am and climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji. We took the Yoshida Trail. After the 8 station, the air gets thin and it is a lot harder to climb. It is an odd and awesome feeling.
Around the 6th station we found a snowboard. I thought it was a good idea to carry it to the top of Mt. Fuji and try to snowboard down. I failed miserably :)
We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal in Tokyo to Mt. Fuji 5th station. You can make bus reservations here:

Eight people were hospitalized Monday morning with non-life threatening injuries after a reported attack on the Ohio State University campus, fire and hospital officials said after the school sent a series of tweets telling students to shelter in place and to “Run, Hide Fight,” The Associated Press reported.
