Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/, /næˈ-/), officially the Republic of Namibia (German: Republik Namibia ; Afrikaans: Republiek van Namibië), and formerly German South-West Africa and then South West Africa, is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Zambezi River (essentially a small bulge in Botswana to achieve a Botswana/Zambia micro-border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by San, Damara, and Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. Most of the territory became a German Imperial protectorate in 1884 and remained a German colony until the end of World War I. In 1920, the League of Nations mandated the country to South Africa, which imposed its laws and, from 1948, its apartheid policy. The port of Walvis Bay and the offshore Penguin Islands had been annexed by the Cape Colony under the British crown by 1878 and had become an integral part of the new Union of South Africa at its creation in 1910.

Three dances are presented: Omuhiva, Ehiyo and Otjongo. Otjongo is strictly speaking a dance that is more celebrated by the Himba. However, today it is quite common that Himba live together with the Herero - and I have included it as well.

Around 90km south of Windhoek is the historical town of Rehoboth, set in a dense acacia woodland of camel thorn, sweet-thorn and candle-pod acacia, but with several natural hot-springs. Many travellers pass through this town on their way to Sossusvlei, Hardap Dam, Fish River Canyon and on to Namibia's other main southern tourist attractions. The main inhabitants of the town are the Baster community, the descendants of people of mixed parentage who trekked across the Orange River under their leader Hermanus van Wyk, and settled at Rehoboth in 1870. The town is divided into 7 neighbourhoods, called blocks. The history of the Rehoboth Basters is recorded in the Rehoboth Museum, where their cultural heritage and archaeological finds in the area, such as an open-air burial site, are recor...

This is a fascinating South African propaganda film about the "Bush War" in Angola and Namibia between the SA-trained and equipped Namibian army, the South African Defence Forces (SADF), the Angolan army, Cuba, UNITA, and SWAPO. Camborne School of Mines MSc Geology visit Navachab Gold, Langer Heinrich Uranium, Walvis Bay Salt, Okorusu Flurospar, Lofdal Rare Earths, Skorpion Zinc and Namdeb Diamond mines.
When people think of diamonds poverty is not usually the first think that comes to mind. The reality is diamonds are mined in some of the poorest countries on earth. One might think the answer would be simply stop buying diamonds from continents like Africa based on the injustices of the past (and unfortunately ongoing in Zimbabwe) but this would only make things worse for those struggling to survive. At Precious Earth we believe the answer is to responsibly harness the economical potential of traceable diamonds and empower the local people through jobs and education in the territories, like Namibia, where diamonds are mined. Namibia Diamonds are the only diamonds that feature the Team Namibia* logo and come with a validation certificate. This assures you that your diamond is a natural, et...
by: Alna Dall One Exclusive Phosphorous is the eleventh most common element in the world. It helps in the creation of our DNA, it is needed for your body to form bones and teeth. It is also an essential part of cell growth in plants. It can be found everywhere in products like carbonated drinks, detergents but more importantly, fertilizers. Although it occurs naturally in substances such as bone, ash, urine and animal manure, in order to keep up with the global demand for phosphorous, it has been mined for centuries from phosphate rock - a natural and non-renewable resource. There a few sites along the Namibian coast where large quantities of phosphate rock have been detected on the seabed floor...but mines have been unable to start dredging, due to a 18 month moratorium from Governm...

South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances.
The Regional Networks of National Ozone Units (NOUs) under the Multilateral Fund are a path-breaking mechanism for North-South and South-South cooperation. Networking provides a platform for NOUs from Article 5 countries to exchange experiences, develop their skills and tap the expertise of their peers in both developing and developed countries. Conducted at the regional level, the Networking activity builds the Ozone Officers' skills for implementing and managing their national ODS phase-out activities. During 2016 these videos were filmed at the regional network meetings around the world. The NOUs were asked about their success stories, alternative refrigerants selected and their personal messages for national ozone celebrations.

The Wild West of Nambia explores the great and eerie Skeleton Coast, the shipwrecks there including the Dunedin Star, the souls of the dead diamond hunters on her shores and the history of the diamond rush at the turn of the century. Inland discoveries include the elusive Flip Stander, who has lived in the desert among the desert lions, documenting them for his website, desertlion.info. After a surreptitious border crossing into Angola we learn of the Himba people, their matriarchal society, their tragic past, the infamous German General Lother Von Trotha, who nearly decimated them in what is considered a precursor to the Nazi Genocide, as well as their future struggles in preventing a hydro electric dam from ruining their la...
Join husband-and-wife team Frans Lanting and Christine Eckstrom on a wild desert journey through Namibia — a land of exotic creatures and haunting landscapes.
Produced by Kevin Harris in 1988, "Namibia - no easy road to Freedom" looked at the harsh realities suffered by Namibia's civilian population under a history of colonial occupation and more specifically the brutalisation suffered as a consequence of South African military occupation. As such, the film was a cry for liberation from the shackles of South African military occupation and a call by the people of Namibia for the right to self determination through the implementation of United Nations Resolution 435. The film was seized by the South African Security Police from The Video Lab in Johannesburg during post-production mass-duplication & subsequently banned in an unsuccessful attempt by the South African authorities to prevent international distribution. Namibia achieved independence ...
