Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត) was first a Hindu, then subsequently a Buddhist, temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture, which received major influence from Kalinga architecture.[1] It has become a symbol of Cambodia,[2] appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early Dravidian architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The modern name, Angkor Wat, means "Temple City" or "City of Temples" in Khmer; Angkor, meaning "city" or "capital city", is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर).[3] Wat is the Khmer word for "temple grounds" (Sanskrit: वाट vāṭa ""enclosure").[4] Prior to this time the temple was known as Preah Pisnulok (Vara Vishnuloka in Sanskrit), after the posthumous title of its founder.

Angkor
Angkor (Khmer: អង្គរ, "Capital City") was the capital city of Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 15th centuries. Angkor was a megacity supporting at least 0.1% of the global population during 1010-1220. The city houses the magnificent Angkor Wat, one of Cambodia's popular tourist attractions.
The word Angkor is derived from the Sanskrit nagara (नगर), meaning "city". The Angkorian period began in AD 802, when the Khmer Hindu monarch Jayavarman II declared himself a "universal monarch" and "god-king", and lasted until the late 14th century, first falling under Ayutthayan suzerainty in 1351. A Khmer rebellion against Siamese authority resulted in the 1431 sacking of Angkor by Ayutthaya, causing its population to migrate south to Longvek.
The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland north of the Great Lake (Tonlé Sap) and south of the Kulen Hills, near modern-day Siem Reap city (13°24′N, 103°51′E), in Siem Reap Province. The temples of the Angkor area number over one thousand, ranging in scale from nondescript piles of brick rubble scattered through rice fields to the Angkor Wat, said to be the world's largest single religious monument. Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, and together, they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture. Visitors approach two million annually, and the entire expanse, including Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom is collectively protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The popularity of the site among tourists presents multiple challenges to the preservation of the ruins.

For many centuries a cultural and historic treasure lay hidden amid the dense jungles of Cambodia: Angkor Wat. This huge temple site was once completely surrounded by water-filled ditches that protected the sanctuary from the noise of the once busy city of Angkor. To date one thousand seven hundred artistic reliefs have been counted in Angkor Wat. Most of them contain religious illustrations derived from Indian mythology. Interestingly, the historic figure of the god-like king, Suryavarman The Second appears to combine with the Hindu god, Vishnu. Khmer culture was strongly influenced by numerous Indian tribes and peoples who had immigrated to Cambodia in the first millennium. Liberation from the long domination of the Chinese-influenced Funan Empire made the Khmer stronger and created their first period of prosperity. The remarkable monuments of Angkor Wat along with the amazing cultural heritage of Cambodia were discovered in 1850 by a Frenchman, Bouillevaux. Based on his sensational discovery, archaeologists have been able to shed further light on this remarkable location. This has led to even greater knowledge of both the legendary mythological images and inhabitants of the Khmer epoch.

Few countries have left more of an impression upon me than Cambodia. I've now visited four times and each and every time I had a completely different experience. I learned what I loved and what I disliked about the country. In particular, I became fond of cities such as Siem Reap and Battambang whereas I found Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville to be less appealing. The shining star attraction I could never get enough of was the Temples of Angkor. Cambodia is a country with a tragic past; however, the future appears to be brighter as it becomes more frequented by tourists every year.

The following is a list of the top things to do while traveling in Cambodia with an emphasis on the top attractions in this travel guide:
1) Angkor Wat! Visiting Cambodia and not going to Angkor Wat is the equivalent of a traveler going to Peru and not checking out Machu Picchu. As the largest religious structure in the world you'll be amazed at it sheer size!
2) One of the more quirky attractions in Cambodia is the Bamboo Train in Battambang. For a small fee you can hop on a bamboo platform and race across rickety old rail tracks. With the wind in your hair you might - once or twice - wonder about the safety of the experience.
3) Khmer cuisine is delightfully delicious and learning how to make it is surprisingly affordable compared to the costs of cooking classes in many neighboring countries. We tried our hand at making Amok, a fish in a coconut curry base, and Lok Lak, tender beef strips in a thick sauce.
4) Trying traditional Cambodian food. We had a big platter of different Khmer delights in the heart of Siem Reap. It's worth it just to dig right in and enjoy!
5) To learn more about the tragic history of Cambodia a visit to Choeung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, is a must. The brutal Khmer Rouge regime executed 1 in 4 of its population with many being tortured and killed here - eventually being discarded in mass graves.
6) To enjoy Khmer arts and performances I'd highly recommend a traditional Apsara show. The performance consists of several parts including a folk dance, folk music and mime.
7) Want to feel happy inside? How about trying a happy pizza in Siem Reap? Not long ago, these special Khmer pizzas featured marijuana as a topping. Nowadays, it is just spices and herbs. A pizza pie won't cost you a fortune.
8) In Phnom Penh, one of the main tourist attractions is the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum formerly known as S-21. What was once a primary school became converted into a detention, interrogation and torture center for the Khmer Rouge. An estimated 20,000 died here between 1975 and 1978. The evil man behind all of this was Pol Pot.
10) One of my favorite temples, aside from Angkor Wat, is Bayon located in Angkor Thom. At these ruins, you'll notice many cold faces that offer a hint of a smile. If you're good at counting try to spot the 216 faces that exist!
11) The local circus in Battambang supports a great cause while offering an entertaining show. Run by an NGO helping out disadvantaged children the performances are spectacular. What was great to hear is that some of the most talented performances.
12) If you must have beach time I suppose you could consider Sihanoukville.
13) If you wake up early enough and head straight to Banteay Srei you may just have the entire temple to yourself. That's exactly what happened to us as we were the first to arrive.
14) While visiting the temples of Angkor chances are you'll hear traditional Khmer music. Many of the performers playing traditional Cambodian music are landmine victims.
15) Have you ever watched the movie Tomb Raider before? If you have you'll notice Ta Prohm. This is where nature dominates architecture.
16) Taking a bus in Cambodia is never dull. Just look outside of your window and you'll be treated to stunning scenery and automobiles that don't exist elsewhere.
17) When visiting Cambodia be sure to check out the rural countryside. We took a countryside tour of Battambang where we got to see how certain foods are prepared and we even got to try eating insects! They tasted yummy!

Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

The Archaeological Survey of India carried out restoration work on the temple between 1986 and 1992. Since the 1990s, Angkor Wat has seen continued conservation efforts and a massive increase in tourism. The temple is part of the Angkor World Heritage Site, established in 1992, which has provided some funding and has encouraged the Cambodian government to protect the site. The German Apsara Conservation Project (GACP) is working to protect the devatas and other bas-reliefs which decorate the temple from damage. The organisation's survey found that around 20% of the devatas were in very poor condition, mainly because of natural erosion and deterioration of the stone but in part also due to earlier restoration efforts.[51] Other work involves the repair of collapsed sections of the structure, and prevention of further collapse: the west facade of the upper level, for example, has been buttressed by scaffolding since 2002, while a Japanese team completed restoration of the north library of the outer enclosure in 2005.[53] World Monuments Fund began conservation work on the Churning of the Sea of Milk Gallery in 2008 after several years of conditions studies. The project restored the traditional Khmer roofing system and removed cement used in earlier restoration attempts that had resulted in salts entering the structure behind the bas-relief, discoloring and damaging the sculpted surfaces. The main phase of work ended in 2012, and the final component will be the installation of finials on the roof of the gallery in 2013.
Microbial biofilms have been found degrading sandstone at Angkor Wat, Preah Khan, and the Bayon and West Prasat in Angkor. The dehydration and radiation resistant filamentous cyanobacteria can produce organic acids that degrade the stone. A dark filamentous fungus was found in internal and external Preah Khan samples, while the alga Trentepohlia was found only in samples taken from external, pink-stained stone at Preah Khan.[54]
Angkor Wat has become a major tourist destination. In 2004 and 2005, government figures suggest that, respectively, 561,000 and 677,000 foreign visitors arrived in Siem Reap province, approximately 50% of all foreign tourists in Cambodia for both years.[55] The site has been managed by the private SOKIMEX group since 1990, which rented it from the Cambodian government. The influx of tourists has so far caused relatively little damage, other than some graffiti; ropes and wooden steps have been introduced to protect the bas-reliefs and floors, respectively. Tourism has also provided some additional funds for maintenance—as of 2000 approximately 28% of ticket revenues across the whole Angkor site was spent on the temples—although most work is carried out by foreign government-sponsored teams rather than by the Cambodian authorities.

Was die Millionen Touristen, die jedes Jahr die berühmten Ruinen besichtigen, nicht ahnen: Der zentrale Tempel Angkor Wat ist nur die noch sichtbare Krönung einer einst riesigen Metropole, die erstaunliche Ähnlichkeit mit gegenwärtigen Großstädten hatte. Die archäologischen Untersuchungen eines australischen Forscherteams suchen nach einer Antwort auf die Frage, ob Angkor einmal die größte Stadt der Welt war.
Es ist ein seltsamer Ort, um eine Stadt zu errichten. Eine Stadt, geprägt von Hunderten Tempeln und meterlangen steinernen Reliefs. Mitten im Dschungel von Kambodscha. Um das Jahr 1200 beginnt der Aufstieg Angkor Wats zur größten Stadt der Welt jener Zeit. Während London gerade einmal 40 000 Einwohner hatte, lebten hier schätzungsweise bis zu einer Million Menschen. Auf einer Fläche, größer als das heutige New York.
Als sich im Jahre 1863 der deutsche Forscher Adolf Bastian auf den weiten Weg in den Dschungel Kambodschas machte, ahnte er nichts von den wirklichen Ausmaßen der Stadt. Bastian sah in ihr vor allem ein großes Heiligtum des Khmer-Volkes, die davon überzeugt waren, dass Riesen einst die Tempel errichtet hätten. Denn wer sonst hätte die großen Steine so zielsicher platzieren können, fragten sie den verdutzten Wissenschaftler?
Bastian erkannte bei genauer Ansicht der steinernen Reliefs schnell, dass die mythologischen Wurzeln Angkors nicht im Buddhismus, sondern im Hinduismus zu finden seien. Daher vermutete der Deutsche auch einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Untergang Angkors und den Auseinandersetzungen um die religiöse Vormachtsstellung zwischen Buddhisten und Hinduisten am Hof Angkors.
War es möglich, dass ein Streit um den richtigen Glauben den Niedergang der Stadt eingeleitet hatte? Für die Hunderten Wasserkanäle und riesigen Wasserreservoirs interessierte sich Bastian kaum. Aus seiner Sicht folgerichtig, waren sie für ihn nur die Verkörperung des Ur-Ozeans in der hinduistischen Lehre von der Entstehung der Welt. Dass sie mit dem Untergang der Stadt zu tun haben könnten, kam ihm nicht in den Sinn.
Diese These jedoch vertreten heutige Wissenschaftler, die auf den Spuren Bastians nach Angkor Wat zurückkehren. Dank neuartiger Hi-Tech-Forschungsmethoden, wozu auch wärmesensible Infrarot-Kameras gehören, die aus dem Space Shuttle der NASA Luftaufnahmen machen, ist es einem Team um den australischen Wissenschaftler Roland Fletcher gelungen, die wahren Ausmaße Angkors aufzuzeigen. Sie sind um ein Vielfaches größer, als frühere Forscher wie Bastian ahnen konnten. Eine atemberaubende Entdeckung, die unsere Sicht Angkors und die Frage nach seinem Untergang komplett verändert.
Die Luftaufnahmen zeigen eine Metropole, umrahmt von einem alles umspannenden Kanalsystem. Eine gigantische Infrastruktur für fast eine Million Menschen, in ihren Ausmaßen größer als alle Städte jener Zeit. "Es war diese stetig wachsende Infrastruktur, die Angkor irgendwann zum Verhängnis wurde", sagt Wissenschaftler Fletcher. 600 Jahre lang wuchs Angkor, bis das Reich an seiner eigenen Größe zugrunde ging. Le temple est admiré pour la grandeur et l'harmonie de son architecture et les nombreux bas-reliefs qui ornent ses murs. Sa beauté et sa taille sont telles que beaucoup le considèrent comme la huitième merveille du monde1. Il donne également des indices sur l'important système hydraulique d'Angkor. Au centre du temple se dressent des tours en quinconce. Contrairement à la plupart des temples d'Angkor, Angkor Vat est orienté vers l'ouest, probablement parce qu'il est orienté vers Vishnou.
Le temple est admiré pour la grandeur et l'harmonie de son architecture et les nombreux bas-reliefs qui ornent ses murs. Sa beauté et sa taille sont telles que beaucoup le considèrent comme la huitième merveille du monde1. Il donne également des indices sur l'important système hydraulique d'Angkor. Il est classé au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

Axel Klitzkes Ergebnisse und Untersuchungen an der Tempelanlage Angkor Wat und seine Vergleiche mit den großen Pyramiden und anderen ägyptischen Tempeln sind erstaunlich und überraschend.
Quer-Denken.TV war zusammen mit dem Bauingenieur Axel Klitzke in der riesigen Tempelanlage von Angkor Wat unterwegs. Die Unterstützung von Prof. George Reiff von der Angkor-Universtät in Siem Reap war dabei ungeheuer wertvoll, da er sich mit Geschichte, Kultur, Land und Leuten gut auskennt. Die Angkor-Universität unterstützte Axel Klitzke freundlicherweise, was Vermessungspläne und Zeichnungen des großen Haupttempels von Angkor Wat betrifft.
Dieser Haupttempel der gesamten, riesigen Tempelanlage von Angkor Wat ist, wie Axel Klitzke herausgefunden hat, ein in Stein gehauenes Archiv des kosmischen Wissens der Menschheit.
Überall begegnen dem aufmerksamen Betrachter in und an diesem Bauwerk die kosmischen Grundprinzipien und ewigen geometrischen Formen, die in ihrer verblüffenden Perfektion auch überall in der Natur schon angelegt sind - und das mit mathematischer Perfektion.
Die Perfektion im Bau ist schon in der Grundkonstruktion verblüffend. Die Mauern und Außenmaße, die geraden Linien des Haupttempels sind so exakt, daß man es mit einem Laser nicht perfekter hätte anlegen können. Eigentlich fast unmöglich für die Mittel der damaligen Zeit.
Dann finden sich überall in den Seiten- und Winkelverhältnissen auffallend viele Hinweise auf Zahlenverhältnisse und Formen, die wir nur als Ordnung der Schöpfung bezeichnen können. Axel Klitzke nennt in seinem Vortrag viele Beispiele dafür und zeigt die Analogien zu den alten, ägyptischen Tempeln und den großen Pyramien auf, die nach ebenfalls exakt diesen Grundkriterien aufgebaut sind.
Dort wie in Angkor Wat finden wir diese Grundformen und -zahlen dieser Schöpfungsordnung, wie Axel Klitzke akribisch nachweist. Fast jeder Teil des faszinierenden Bauwerkes des Haupttempels Angkor Wat belegt das. Wir erfahren, daß dieser Tempel ein in Stein gehauenes Archiv des Wissens um die kosmologische Numerologie ist. Und auch hier gibt es die Analogie zu den großen Pyramiden. Der Code des Sarkophages in den Pyramiden, zum Beispiel, hat als Grundprinzip seiner Maße und Seitenverhältnisse genau das, was der Haupttempel in Agkor Wat immer wieder aufweist.
