David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.

New conflicts on the EU's doorstep - and around the world - have led to increasing numbers of people seeking refuge in the bloc. Last year, the EU received more asylsum applications than at any time in the last seven years. That's acccording to a new report by the European Union Agency for Asylum.
The figures are the highest since Europe's 2015-2016 migrant crisis, when more than a million people fled across the EU's borders. Applications decreased in the years that followed, but then rose again. Syrian and Afghan nationals submitted the most applications in 2023, followed by Palestinians and then Turkish nationals. The latest figures don't include the more than 4-Mmillion Ukrainians given refuge since Russia's invasion.
Germany recorded more than 330,000 asylum applications in 2023 - more than any other EU member state. It's followed by France, Spain and then Italy.

The Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has asked Moscow for protection. The pro-Russia separatists accuse the pro-Western Moldovan government of waging economic warfare gainst them. Tensions between the two neighbours have been rising ever since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova - and falls within Russia's sphere of influence. It broke away from Moldova during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, but ISN'T internationally recognized.

The main UN agency set up to assist Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is facing a cash crisis. UNRWA has said it will run out of money in the coming days, after major donor nations suspended their funding. The freeze came after Israel said that several UNRWA workers were involved in the October 7 terror attacks by Hamas. The agency has dismissed the workers in question and an independent investigation is underway. Now the agency's future is at stake – leaving long-term humanitarian aid for Gaza in doubt.
For more, we talk to Jonathan Fowler – a spokesman for UNWRA, currently in Amman, Jordan.
And we talk to Matthias Schmale. He is a senior UN advisor based in Addis Ababa, but also a former UNRWA director in Gaza.

Emmanuel Macron has faced uneasy reactions from European allies after he refused to rule out sending Western ground troops to Ukraine.
The French President made the remark at a meeting of more than 20 European leaders in Paris. The conference was convened as a show of support for Ukraine against Russia's war of aggression. Barbie causó sensación como mujer con casa propia, coche propio y carrera profesional. Con millones de seguidores en Instagram, ahora es una influencer. Muchas mujeres exitosas han sido inmortalizadas como Barbie. Más recientemente, la bióloga marina alemana Antje Boetius. El documental muestra cómo Barbie es y sigue siendo un fenómeno.
