Don LaFontaine
Donald Leroy "Don" LaFontaine (August 26, 1940 – September 1, 2008) was an American voice actor who recorded more than 5,000 film trailers and hundreds of thousands of television advertisements, network promotions, and video game trailers.
He became identified with the phrase "In a world...", used in so many movie trailers that it became a cliché. Widely known in the film industry, the man whose nicknames included "Thunder Throat" and "The Voice of God", became known to a wider audience through commercials for GEICO insurance and the Mega Millions lottery game.
Early life
LaFontaine was born on August 26, 1940, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Alfred and Ruby LaFontaine. LaFontaine said his voice cracked at age 13 in mid-sentence, giving him the bass tones that later brought him much fame and success. After graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1958, he enlisted in the United States Army, and worked as a recording engineer for the Army Band and Chorus.
Career
LaFontaine continued to work as a recording engineer after discharge and began working at the National Recording Studios in New York City, where, in 1962, he had the opportunity to work with producer Floyd Peterson on radio spots for Dr. Strangelove. Peterson incorporated many of LaFontaine's ideas for the spots and, in 1963, they went into business together producing advertising exclusively for the movie industry. LaFontaine claimed that this company first came up with many of the famous movie trailer catch phrases, including his own future signature phrase, "in a world..."

In a World... is a 2013 American comedy film written, directed and co-produced by Lake Bell.
The film stars Bell as Carol Solomon, a vocal coach intent on doing voice-over work for film trailers. The film co-stars Demetri Martin, Fred Melamed, Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, and Tig Notaro.
The film was a financial success, grossing nearly $3 million on a budget of less than $1 million, and received positive reviews from critics.
Plot
Sam Sotto is a Hollywood actor who is known as "king of voice-overs". He has done the narration and voice-overs to many theatrical film trailers and films, as well as recently published an autobiography about his life and is about to receive a lifetime achievement award upon turning 60. His daughter, Carol Solomon, is a struggling vocal coach who has always been overshadowed by her father. Sam kicks Carol out of his house so that he can live with his much younger 30-year-old girlfriend Jamie (who is a year younger than Carol). Carol goes to live with her older sister Dani and her husband Moe in their small apartment.

The celebration of the life of Don LaFontaine continues with Joe Cipriano and Paul Pape explaining the inspiration for creating the Don LaFontaine Voice Over Lab and what voice actors can do to support the Lab.
We learn what Don did to keep his golden voice healthy and how the movie trailer for the GUNSLINGERS OF CASA GRANDE changed his life. We hear more about Don and his only agent Steve Tisherman’s relationship including Don’s funny nicknames for him and Don’s other best friend, actor Steve Susskind, is lovingly remembered by the panel of guests.
Nita Whitaker LaFontaine openly discusses her raw and poignant book, FINDING MY VOICE, that she wrote following Don’s passing and expresses her gratitude for the village of friends and family that surround her and her daughters.
Each guest reflects on how they would like Don to be remembered and give more insight about the amazing qualities Don possessed. Viewers get to see the state-of-the-art Lab and are encouraged to use it to honor Don’s memory and philosophy of giving. Nita talks about the kind of father he was to their daughters and how Don never did anything small, demonstrated by taking an original bedtime story and turning it into a movie with an A-list cast and crew and original music. Paul tells a touching story about Don also being a giving, loving, father figure to other people’s children as well.

About a year later Don passed away (September 2008) and the clip generated over 250,000 hits in a short time - and at this posting is now well over 300,000. Recently I found the original HD DVD master and in response to the incredible interest now re-posting in a higher quality. enjoy.

Sam visits with good friend, `Nita Whitaker, who he says has a "voice from God." She won Star Search, she sings with Andrea Bocelli, she sang with Sam on the backgrounds for WAR ON WAR, and happens to be married to another very interesting person.
We get to meet Simba, who's father, Mufasa recently went to the great ocean in the sky, we also catch a glimpse of Michael Jackson, Puff Daddy (or P. Diddy depending on his attitude), and then the great Don LaFontaine! They also talk about people in their lives like Oprah Winfrey, Andrea Bocelli and Stevie Wonder.
The friends relive great memories of how they met on a stage show Sam wrote called "Hard Copy".
At the close of the video, Nita sings YOU ARE MY FRIEND from her "LifeStories" CD.
Groomed in gospel, trained in opera, honed in pop, Nita's voice is a remarkable instrument that's difficult to define. But when you hear her power chops and sweet high tones, you know you are in the presence of greatness.
