In this episode of Cycling across North America, I bring you along for the remainder of Day 12.5, and through most of day 14! On Day 12, I got really sick and couldn't keep in any fluids. I because I was low on electrolytes, and my body needed to recover, I didn't think it was safe to continue on. I talked to the driver of a food delivery truck, and he said it was fine to throw my bike in the back of the semi trailer, and he took me five miles (on his way) into Selmer, Tennessee. In Selmer, TN I met with the owner of one of the local papers, and he wrote up a story that he put on the front page of the newspaper! Keep in mind, this was the hottest week we'd had all summer, and the humidity was torturing hot. I went back to a hotel where a sweet older woman who manages it, payed for the difference that I couldn't afford to cover. I didn't ask her for this help, she simply offered after I told her that I could only pay $35 when getting a hotel. Leaving Selmer, and headed towards the North East side of Jackson, Tennessee I ran into Tom (owner of the newspaper) and he handed me the paper, hot of the press. :) I made it on into Jackson, and randomly ran into the past president of the Cycling Association for the Jackson, TN area. He offered to take me from downtown, to the NW side of Jackson to the Verizon store (so I could replace the iPhone), and to the Bike Shop to get some bike pedals and CO2. While there, I got to ride a Penny-Farthing (one of those old big wheeled bikes) that the bike shop had out front! (See separate video here: https://goo.gl/1TyT25) That night, I went to the second place I found via www.Couchsurfing.com. I repaired the flat tire, put new pedals on the bike, and continued to hydrate my body in the company of wonderful people. The following morning (Day number 14) I headed North from Jackson, with a big goal of reaching Dyersburg, TN. I went through a spell where I didn't feel very good, and I thought I was getting sick again. It was possibly something in my head, although I believe it was a little more that that. As I neared Dyersburg, I stopped at a local farm implement repair and sales company and he got permission for me to camp out at their church on the West side of town. The church had running water, and a nice pavilion that I hung my hammock from....and I was able to get stretched out and enjoy the sweat bees. :) A Trek 4 Change is helping us to build a conversation around "real" things we can all do to help us become more sustainable as a human race...and to help us build a community; and work "hand in hand" on this vast topic of sustainability.
