Rahul Dev Burman (27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994) was an Indian film score composer, who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry. Nicknamed Pancham da, he was the only son of the composer Sachin Dev Burman.
RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous.
He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India even after his death.

Rahul Dev Burman better known as RD Burman is well known for his evergreen hits and 80's and 90's songs. From the 1960s to the 1990s, RD Burman composed musical scores for more than 300 movies. Rahul Dev Burman lovingly known as Pancham, has reigned over the Bollywood music from the 60's to 90's era. His beloved wife legendary play back singer Asha Bhosle has played a major part in his road to succes. Rahul Dev Burman (27th June 1939 - 4th January 1994), better known as R.D. Burman, was a famous Bollywood music director during the 60's through the early 90's. He was known for introducing an upbeat, Western copied music that defined much of the music of the 1970's. This style has influenced generations of music directors even to today.
He is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry. Nicknamed Pancham da, he was the only son of the illustrious composer Sachin Dev Burman. RD Burman composed musical scores for Out of RD Burman's 331 released movie scores, 292 were in Hindi, 31 in Bengali, 3 in Telugu, 2 each in Tamil and Oriya, and 1 in Marathi. RD also composed for 5 TV Serials in Hindi and Marathi. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife - 1980) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. This list of R.D. Burman songs that contained material that was "borrowed" from pre-existing sources, is so long that many say that the majority of his career was actually based upon plagiarism.
He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India even after his death.
He has been remembered and honoured by numerous, remixes, documentaries, and the naming of the "Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent" after him.

From the 1960s to the 1990s, RD Burman composed musical scores for 331 movies. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He also scored many songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India even after his death.
Biography
Early life
RD Burman was born to the Bollywood composer/singer Sachin Dev Burman and his lyricist wife Meera Dev Burman (née Dasgupta), in Kolkata. Initially, he was nicknamed Tublu by his maternal grandmother although he later became known by the nickname of Pancham. According to some stories, he was nicknamed as Pancham because, as a child, whenever he cried, it sounded in the fifth note (Pa), G scale, of music notation. The word Pancham means five (or fifth) in Bengali, his mother tongue. Another theory says that the baby was nicknamed Pancham because he could cry in five different notes. Yet another version is that when the veteran Indian actor Ashok Kumar saw a newborn Rahul uttering the syllable Pa repeatedly, he nicknamed the boy Pancham.

Rahul Dev Burman (27th June 1939 - 4th January 1994) was an Indian film score composer, who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry. Nicknamed Pancham da, he was the only son of the illustrious composer Sachin Dev Burman. From the 1960s to the 1990s, RD Burman composed musical scores for 331 movies. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India even after his death

Rahul Dev Burman (27th June 1939 - 4th January 1994) was an Indian film score composer, who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry. Nicknamed Pancham da, he was the only son of the illustrious composer Sachin Dev Burman. From the 1960s to the 1990s, RD Burman composed musical scores for 331 movies. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. He served as an influence to the next generation of Indian music directors, and his songs continue to be popular in India even after his death

RD Burman composed musical scores for Out of RD Burman's 331 released movie scores, 292 were in Hindi, 31 in Bengali, 3 in Telugu, 2 each in Tamil and Oriya, and 1 in Marathi. RD also composed for 5 TV Serials in Hindi and Marathi. He was mainly active in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) as a composer, and also provided vocals for a few of compositions. RD Burman did major work with Asha Bhosle (his wife - 1980) and Kishore Kumar, and scored many of the songs that made these singers famous. This list of R.D. Burman songs that contained material that was "borrowed" from pre-existing sources, is so long that many say that the majority of his career was actually based upon plagiarism.
