VERSAILLES Season 1 - an Incendo, Zodiak Fiction and Capa Drama co-production
Louis XIV is twenty-eight years old. In order to rule over the nobility and to permanently impose his absolute power, he launches the construction of Versailles, like one sets a trap. Louis XIV is a young king haunted by childhood trauma, the Fronde, a rebellion of the nobility against his father Louis XIII… Outstanding political strategist, manipulator, Machiavellian, he will “invent” Versailles in order to keep the Nobles away from Paris and under control; he is progressively transforming Versailles into a golden prison. He is also inclined to Romanesque passions, but how to live them out when one is the greatest king of the world?
The first season follows the King as he turns into the Sun King: the King of the Kings. The historical and fictional characters, ranging from the most known courtier to the most humble villager, guide us through a world of betrayal and intimate secrets, of political maneuvers and war declarations, revealing Versailles in all its glory and brutality.

Pour la première fois, un film réalisé à partir de prises de vues aériennes dévoile l’intégralité et l’unité du territoire de la cité royale conçue par Louis XIV et André Le Nôtre.
Vu d’en haut, les liens entre la ville et son château deviennent étroits : de part et d’autre de la chambre du Roi, les perspectives, les avenues et les allées, les bosquets et les places se répondent.
Ces nouveaux aperçus réalisés par la Ville de Versailles mettent en évidence un plan régulier, strictement ordonnancé de manière à laisser entrer la nature et la lumière du soleil, dont les rayons doivent converger vers le château.
Pionnière de la ville-jardin avec un territoire de plus de 50% d’espaces naturels, Versailles a ainsi inspiré l’urbanisme de nombreuses villes dans le monde dont Washington, Karlsruhe et Saint-Pétersbourg.
Le groupe d’électro-pop versaillais Saint Michel signe la bande originale du film avec une version instrumentale inédite de son titre aérien, Bob.

Palace of Versailles
The Palace of Versailles, or simply Versailles (English /vɛərˈsaɪ/ vair-SY or /vərˈsaɪ/ vər-SY; French: [vɛʁsaj]), is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France. It is also known as the château de Versailles.
When the château was built, Versailles was a country village; today, however, it is a wealthy suburb of Paris, some 20 kilometres southwest of the French capital. The court of Versailles was the centre of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is therefore famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.
Architectural history
Begun by Louis XIII in 1623, the château began as a hunting lodge in brick and stone. It was enlarged into a royal palace by Louis XIV. The first phase of the expansion (c. 1661–1678) was designed and supervised by the architect Louis Le Vau. It culminated in the addition of three new wings of stone (the enveloppe), which surrounded Louis XIII's original building on the north, south, and west (the garden side). After Le Vau's death in 1670, the work was taken over and completed by his assistant, François d'Orbay.Charles Le Brun designed and supervised the elaborate interior decoration, and André Le Nôtre landscaped the extensive Gardens of Versailles. Le Brun and Le Nôtre collaborated on the numerous fountains, and Le Brun supervised the design and installation of countless statues.

Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days. Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people! Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style. Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence.
