Here are 10 incredibly ambitious DARPA projects.
The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, was established in 1958 to make sure the country’s military has the best and most useful technology.
Here are 10 of the agency’s most ambitious projects.
Number 10. A floating tank. The Captive Air Amphibious Transporter, called CAAT for short, is designed for making short trips from ship to shore while carrying a full load or towing smaller crafts behind it.
Number 9. Confetti-sized navigation tool. In the event that access to GPS is unavailable, researchers have made a locating chip that’s smaller than a penny. It uses a clock, gyroscopes, and accelerometers to help a person figure out where they are and where they’re headed.
Number 8. Self-guided bullets. Sometimes even highly-trained sharpshooters need a little help hitting their targets. Enter the EXACTO system, complete with maneuverable bullets and real-time guidance abilities.
Number 7. Spray-can walls. Dubbed project BlockADE, which stands for ‘Block Access to Deny Entry’, DARPA is working with developers to make an easy-to-use material that could build barricades impervious to bullets, human force, and sharp tools.
Number 6. Unmanned helicopters. A lot of missions could benefit from vertical take off and landing vehicles, but using traditional helicopters isn’t always an option. Various modules attached to a self-flying craft could provide needed services to otherwise inaccessible areas.
Number 5. Underwater supply hubs. The ocean floor is enormous and hard to get to, which, for DARPA, makes it the perfect place to create a secret supply stash. Filled capsules could stay underwater until needed, at which time they’d be summoned to float up to their desired recipient.
Number 4. Terminator vision. First, the enhanced optical system would supply the goggle wearer with a dimensional, 360-degree view of their surroundings. Then, it would assess and locate targets within it. Just like in the movies.
Number 3. Solar-powered drones. At present, drones run on short-lived power sources and thus can only make treks of limited duration. Switching to solar power could allow them to roam the skies for up to 5 years.
Number 2. Gecko Gloves. The problem with tall walls is that they’re just so hard to climb over. In an effort to make the task a lot easier, a special fabric has been created. It helps humans scale vertical surfaces with the ease and grace of the project’s inspiration animal, the gecko.
Number 1. Robotic pack mules. Guns, ammo, and supplies are heavy and the front line is no place for a real mule to be hauling it around. That’s where the robot version of the beast of burden comes in. It was recently tested in Hawaii and it reportedly can handle large loads and tough terrain.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, essentially has one purpose, to churn out the next generation of military technology. Here are DARPA's top ten futuristic projects:
10. Meet the GXV-T, a next-generation armored vehicle which the agency intends to be "mobile, effective, safe and affordable." This go-kart-looking contraption features the promise of extreme speed coupled with the ability to traverse 95% of terrain.
9. Next up is the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel. This program aims to create an entirely novel form of seafaring; one where not a single crew member is needed to travel across hundreds of miles of open water at a time.
8. At number eight is the Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane. This program's goal is to combine fixed-wing and rotary-wing technologies as well as major upgrades in cruising and vertical flight capabilities.
7. DARPA's Airborne Launch Assist Space Access program intends to take some of the waiting out of satellite launches. The program's goals are to ensure "more affordable, flexible and reliable access to space," via the ability to send large payloads into low Earth orbit for less than $1 million per launch.
6. Sticking with space, say hello the Experimental Spaceplane, or XS-1 program. The goal here is to create an unmanned vehicle that can deliver small satellites into orbit time and time again using expendable upper stages while the plane itself returns unharmed.
5. At number five is DARPA's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance, or EXACTO program. EXACTO promises the first ever guided .50-caliber bullets. The specialized ammunition is helped along by a real-time guidance program that accounts for various factors as the bullets reach their target.
4. Speaking of reach, take a look at DARPA's DEKA Arm System. In the video, one Mr. Fred Downs is able to perform a common task while wearing the highly-advanced prosthetic arm.
3. Cyborgs may be the stuff of science fiction, but DARPA aims to change all that with number three on the list. The Obama administration's Brain Initiative features eight different projects intended to enhance human physical and cognitive function--including an implant that connects human brains to computers.
2. Next up is DARPA's Fast Lightweight Autonomy program. This initiative aims at creating a series of drones that can effectively fly through space-constrained environments--at up to 45 miles per hour. These could be a great boon for exploring places humans can't go.

The administration was responding to the Soviet launching of Sputnik 1 in 1957, and DARPA's mission was to ensure U.S. military technology would be more sophisticated than that of the nation's potential enemies.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, essentially has one purpose, to churn out the next generation of military technology. Here are DARPA's top ten futuristic projects: 10. Meet the GXV-T, a next-generation armored vehicle which the agency intends to be "mobile, effective, safe and affordable." This go-kart-looking contraption features the promise of extreme speed coupled with the ability to traverse 95% of terrain. 9. Next up is the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel. This program aims to create an entirely novel form of seafaring; one where not a single crew member is needed to travel across hundreds of miles of open water at a time. 8. At number eight is the Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane. This program's goal is to combine fixed-wing and rotary-wing technologies as well as major upgrades in cruising and vertical flight capabilities. 7. DARPA's Airborne Launch Assist Space Access program intends to take some of the waiting out of satellite launches. The program's goals are to ensure "more affordable, flexible and reliable access to space," via the ability to send large payloads into low Earth orbit for less than $1 million per launch. 6. Sticking with space, say hello the Experimental Spaceplane, or XS-1 program. The goal here is to create an unmanned vehicle that can deliver small satellites into orbit time and time again using expendable upper stages while the plane itself returns unharmed. 5. At number five is DARPA's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance, or EXACTO program. EXACTO promises the first ever guided .50-caliber bullets. The specialized ammunition is helped along by a real-time guidance program that accounts for various factors as the bullets reach their target. 4. Speaking of reach, take a look at DARPA's DEKA Arm System. In the video, one Mr. Fred Downs is able to perform a common task while wearing the highly-advanced prosthetic arm. 3. Cyborgs may be the stuff of science fiction, but DARPA aims to change all that with number three on the list. The Obama administration's Brain Initiative features eight different projects intended to enhance human physical and cognitive function--including an implant that connects human brains to computers. 2. Next up is DARPA's Fast Lightweight Autonomy program. This initiative aims at creating a series of drones that can effectively fly through space-constrained environments--at up to 45 miles per hour. The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, was established in 1958 to make sure the country’s military has the best and most useful technology.
Here are 10 of the agency’s most ambitious projects.
Number 10. A floating tank. The Captive Air Amphibious Transporter, called CAAT for short, is designed for making short trips from ship to shore while carrying a full load or towing smaller crafts behind it.
Number 9. Confetti-sized navigation tool. In the event that access to GPS is unavailable, researchers have made a locating chip that’s smaller than a penny. It uses a clock, gyroscopes, and accelerometers to help a person figure out where they are and where they’re headed.
Number 8. Self-guided bullets. Sometimes even highly-trained sharpshooters need a little help hitting their targets. Enter the EXACTO system, complete with maneuverable bullets and real-time guidance abilities.
Number 7. Spray-can walls. Dubbed project BlockADE, which stands for ‘Block Access to Deny Entry’, DARPA is working with developers to make an easy-to-use material that could build barricades impervious to bullets, human force, and sharp tools.
Number 6. Unmanned helicopters. A lot of missions could benefit from vertical take off and landing vehicles, but using traditional helicopters isn’t always an option. Various modules attached to a self-flying craft could provide needed services to otherwise inaccessible areas.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, essentially has one purpose, to churn out the next generation of military technology. Here are DARPA's top ten futuristic projects:
10. Meet the GXV-T, a next-generation armored vehicle which the agency intends to be "mobile, effective, safe and affordable." This go-kart-looking contraption features the promise of extreme speed coupled with the ability to traverse 95% of terrain.
9. Next up is the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel. This program aims to create an entirely novel form of seafaring; one where not a single crew member is needed to travel across hundreds of miles of open water at a time.
8. At number eight is the Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane. This program's goal is to combine fixed-wing and rotary-wing technologies as well as major upgrades in cruising and vertical flight capabilities.
7. DARPA's Airborne Launch Assist Space Access program intends to take some of the waiting out of satellite launches. The program's goals are to ensure "more affordable, flexible and reliable access to space," via the ability to send large payloads into low Earth orbit for less than $1 million per launch.
6. Sticking with space, say hello the Experimental Spaceplane, or XS-1 program. The goal here is to create an unmanned vehicle that can deliver small satellites into orbit time and time again using expendable upper stages while the plane itself returns unharmed.

9. Next up is the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel. This program aims to create an entirely novel form of seafaring; one where not a single crew member is needed to travel across hundreds of miles of open water at a time.

“DARPA has previously demonstrated direct neural control of a robotic arm, and now we’ve completed the circuit, sending information from a robotic arm back to the brain,” said Justin Sanchez, Director of DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office and the program manager for Revolutionizing Prosthetics. “This new capability fundamentally changes the relationship between humans and machines.”
The volunteer for the study, Nathan Copeland, has lived with quadriplegia from the upper chest down since a 2004 car accident that broke his neck and injured his spinal cord. Nearly ten years following his accident, after agreeing to participate in clinical trials, Nathan underwent surgery to have four microelectrode arrays—each about half the size of a shirt button—placed in his brain, two in the motor cortex and two in the sensory cortex regions that correspond to feeling in his fingers and palm. The researchers ran wires from those arrays to a robotic arm developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University. The APL arm contains sophisticated torque sensors that can detect when pressure is being applied to any of its fingers, and can convert those physical “sensations” into electrical signals that the wires carry back to the arrays in Nathan’s brain to provide precise patterns of stimulation to his sensory neurons.

A writer has declared the Great Barrier Reef in Australia officially dead after a story in September said that the bleaching of the reef's coral this year has caused it to decline.
