Farida Jalal was born on 14 March 1949, New Delhi, India. She was discovered by Filmfare's United Producers Talent Hunt in the 1960s. She starred in her first movie as a child artiste, Baby Farida, in the 1960 hit 'Chaudvin Ka Chand'. Thereafter she starred in a total of close to 130 movies as a character actress, and her roles included playing the parts of a a daughter, sister, a fiancée, & a family friend.
She took a break for several years in the early 80s, and made a comeback and starred in roles of an elder sister, mother, grandmother, elderly neighbor, & widow.
She is best remembered for her role as Rajesh Khanna's betrothed in the 1969 hit Aradhana and for her song 'Bhagon Mein Bahar Hai, Kaliyon Pe Nikhar Hai...'. She also played the betrothed of Rishi Kapoor in another hit Bobby in 1973.
To date, She has won four awards for her performances in Paras, Henna, Mammo, and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
Farida got married to Tabrez Barnavar, and shortly thereafter gave birth to a son, Yaseen. Tragedy visited her when Tabrez passed away in 2003.
She is one of few actresses that has had a role in every major Bollywood hit. Her 2007 forthcoming releases include Laaga Chunari Main Daag.

B-towns favorite on-screen mother, Farida Jalal has made a comeback in the television serial, Balika Vadhu, after many years.
It seems Farida Jalal is hurt after not being offered a single role in Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Yash Chopra films since 1998.
Apparently, Farida had a fall-out with Shah Rukh Khan in 1998 during the making of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, in which she played a doting mother to SRK.
With disappointments from SRK, soon Farida faded from the filmi circuit.

Mammo is a film by Shyam Benegal released in 1994. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1995. Farida Jalal won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance, while Surekha Sikri won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. It was the first film of his Muslim trilogy, which included Sardari Begum (1996) and Zubeidaa (2001), and which he extended, about a decade later, with Well Done Abba (2010).

Synopsis - 13 year old Riyaz lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, India, with his grandmother, Fayyuzi, and her sister, Mehmooda alias Mammo. Quite outspoken and embittered over his dad abandoning him, Riyaz does not have many friends, save for Rohan. When Mammo plans a surprise birthday party for him, Riyaz is offended as he believes his friends will make fun of him as his lifestyle is not as good as their's. Fayyuzi and Riyaz have an argument with Mammo, and she leaves for the Mosque at Haji Ali, but returns when both apologize to her. Although Mammo was born in Panipat during the British Raj, she was one of thousands of Muslims who left for Pakistan. She was married over there, could not conceive, was branded a "barren woman", and asked to leave. Having nowhere else to go, she came to live with her widowed sister in Bombay on a temporary Visa. Every month she would walk to the nearest Police Station and get an extension. She finally paid a Rs.4800/ as a bribe in order to get a permanent visa through Inspector Apte. When Apte was transferred, a new Police Inspector took over, processed her papers, held her to be an illegal immigrant, arrested her, had her escorted to the Bombay Central Railway Station, board the Frontier Mail, which would return her to Pakistan. Riyaz and Fayyuzi make every possible attempt to trace and bring her back, which was all in vain. Now 20 years later, Riyaz has grown up and has written a book about his Mammo, hoping that someday, somewhere she will find it and they will be reunited again.

Farida Jalal
Farida Jalal (born 14 March 1949) is a veteran Indian actress, who has acted in over two-hundred Bollywood films. Known primarily for her work in Hindi cinema, she has also worked in Telugu, Tamil and English-language films.
Jalal began her career as a child artist in the 1963 melodrama Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke, and her first role as an adult came in Taqdeer (1967). She went on to play leading and supporting roles in numerous motion pictures across the 1970s and 80s. She is widely remembered for her roles in Paras (1971), Henna (1991) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), all of which garnered the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She became a household name after portraying motherly roles and strong female characters in the 1990s and the early 2000s. She has also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for her role in Mammo (1994). She won the Best Actress Award at 2012 Harlem International Film Festival for her role in A Gran Plan (2012).
She has successfully transitioned to numerous shows on Indian television alongside her work in films. Some of her notable works include the sitcom Shararat and Ammaji Ki Galli. Currently, she is seen in the soap opera Satrangi Sasural on channel Zee TV.

Farida Jalal was born on 14 March 1949, New Delhi, India. She was discovered by Filmfare's United Producers Talent Hunt in the 1960s. She starred in her first movie as a child artiste, Baby Farida, in the 1960 hit 'Chaudvin Ka Chand'. Thereafter she starred in a total of close to 130 movies as a character actress, and her roles included playing the parts of a a daughter, sister, a fiancée, & a family friend. She took a break for several years in the early 80s, and made a comeback and starred in roles of an elder sister, mother, grandmother, elderly neighbor, & widow. She is best remembered for her role as Rajesh Khanna's betrothed in the 1969 hit Aradhana and for her song 'Bhagon Mein Bahar Hai, Kaliyon Pe Nikhar Hai...'. Mammo is a film by Shyam Benegal released in 1994. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1995. Farida Jalal won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance, while Surekha Sikri won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. It was the first film of his Muslim trilogy, which included Sardari Begum (1996) and Zubeidaa (2001), and which he extended, about a decade later, with Well Done Abba (2010).

Synopsis - 13 year old Riyaz lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, India, with his grandmother, Fayyuzi, and her sister, Mehmooda alias Mammo. Quite outspoken and embittered over his dad abandoning him, Riyaz does not have many friends, save for Rohan. When Mammo plans a surprise birthday party for him, Riyaz is offended as he believes his friends will make fun of him as his lifestyle is not as good as their's. Fayyuzi and Riyaz have an argument with Mammo, and she leaves for the Mosque at Haji Ali, but returns when both apologize to her. Although Mammo was born in Panipat during the British Raj, she was one of thousands of Muslims who left for Pakistan. She was married over there, could not conceive, was branded a "barren woman", and asked to leave. Having nowhere else to go, she came to live with her widowed sister in Bombay on a temporary Visa. Every month she would walk to the nearest Police Station and get an extension. She finally paid a Rs.4800/ as a bribe in order to get a permanent visa through Inspector Apte. When Apte was transferred, a new Police Inspector took over, processed her papers, held her to be an illegal immigrant, arrested her, had her escorted to the Bombay Central Railway Station, board the Frontier Mail, which would return her to Pakistan. Riyaz and Fayyuzi make every possible attempt to trace and bring her back, which was all in vain. Now 20 years later, Riyaz has grown up and has written a book about his Mammo, hoping that someday, somewhere she will find it and they will be reunited again.

Raju (Anil Kapoor) lives with his disabled mom (Farida Jalal). One day Raju on his way to a job interview saves the life of a rich textile mill owner (Anupam Kher) who offers him a job in his factory which is run by his ambitious daughter Sheetal (Sridevi). Sheetal's competitive attitude and open insults result in her making several enemies in the industry. Raju works as a mechanic in the mill and confronts Sheetal several times for the proper treatment of workers. He is also elected as the union leader. Raju meets Kaajal (Raveena Tandon), who also works in the textile mill, and they fall in love.
A competing textile mill owner Suryadev (Prem Chopra) tries to eliminate Sheetal. Raju saves her by pushing her. Though he saves her, Sheetal is enraged as Raju touches her and slaps him in front of all workers. Later Raju goes to Sheetal's cabin and slaps her for five times. Sheetal cannot fire Raju as then she has to tell all of her workmen she was slapped by Raju. For taking revenge, Sheetal makes an offer to marry him. When Raju turns her down she forces his mom to agree to the marriage. Raju accepts his mom's wishes and decides to sacrifice his love for Kaajal. Sheetal expects Raju to move in with her after their marriage and live in luxury, but Raju refuses and continues to work in the mill. Raju starts to live in Sheetal's house upon his mother's order though he continues his job as a mechanic in the mill which is now his own.
Slowly Raju starts to like Sheetal and starts loving her. He again saves her when some henchmen of Suryadev try to kill her. However tensions arise between Raju and Sheetal when she fires Kajaal out of jealousy as Sheetal sees Kajaal visiting Raju's house frequently, though Kajaal goes there to take care of Raju's lonely mother.
Labor issues cause the workers to go on strike. The competing mill owner plans to take advantage of the situation and hires hoods to set the mill on fire. Raju in his attempt to stop the fire is mistakenly arrested. Raju's mom goes to Sheetal's house to clear matters but is insulted and taunted by Sheetal, and collapses until Raju arrives to save his mother and slaps Sheetal and breaks his ties with her. A guilty Sheetal who truly is in love with Raju decides to kill herself until the rival mill owners kidnap and decide to kill her themselves, until Raju arrives to save her life. Sheetal is remorseful for her behaviour towards her husband and family. She makes Kaajal managing director of the company and stops working to become a good wife to Raju and both of them lives happily ever after with each other love in Raju's house

Shekhar has fallen in love with the new priest's daughter, Lakshmi. Lakshmi's father divulges a secret...she was married and widowed as a teenager. Shekhar's mother objects to them getting married, and Lakshmi takes up the traditional role of a widow (white saris, no bangles, etc.) Shekhar instead marries Kamla, a woman of his mother's choice, and they have a daughter, Raji. Several years later, Kamla dies from cancer, while Raji is at a party. Unaware of her death, Raji gets a shock at her cremation (which she stumble upon by chance) when her father sets her on fire. Since then she becomes afraid of her father, thinking he'll burn her too. Even worse, she longs for a mother figure. Having gotten a quick spiel about reincarnation from her grandmother, Raji pictures her late mother in a rose. Lakshmi stumbles upon there by chance, and provides a voice, pretending to be her motehr. Will Shekhar find out about Lakshmi? Will the Grandmother? Will Raji believe Shekhar won't hurt her? Will Shekhar and Lakshmi get together?
